The Public Health Agency of Canada is warning consumers to avoid eating packaged romaine lettuce while an investigation into and outbreak of E. coli infections in Ontario, Quebec, and several U.S. states continues.
The Canadian federal health watchdog released a statement on its website Tuesday afternoon. The statement was released in conjunction with a similar warning from the Center for Disease Control in the United States. Health officials in both countries are receiving reports about people -
Mayors bet on Grey Cup, food bank wins
The mayors’ bet before a championship game is getting so worn that even Mayor Jim Watson calls the tradition “cheesy.”
But he went ahead and signed up for a mayor-to-mayor bet anyway with Calgary’s Naheed Nenshi, in anticipation of Sunday’s Grey Cup game.
Nobody is going to get rich on this payoff. The loser pays three bucks per point scored to the winning city’s food bank. The loser wears the other team’s jersey to a council meeting and raises the winni -
Human remains pulled from bottom of Outaouais lake
Sûreté du Québec divers have pulled a decomposed body from the bottom of a deep lake in Val-des-Monts, but police have yet to determine if foul play was involved.
The body has been sent for forensic tests, an SQ spokesman said, but it could be weeks before a determination is made about the cause of death.
“It was a body — but it was more bones — that were found,” said Sgt. Marc Tessier. “It’s too early to say anything about foul play: We ha -

LeBreton Flats development applications are 'incomplete,' planning chair told
The up-in-the-air status of RendezVous LeBreton Group’s planning applications is one piece in the larger mystery surrounding the progress of the massive LeBreton Flats redevelopment project.
Coun. Jan Harder, who chairs the planning committee, said she hasn’t heard much about RendezVous’ municipal land-use applications for the historic site, but she’s been told the package, so far, is “incomplete.”

House Works: Three mistakes homeowners make when finishing basements
Winter is the season when Canadians most cherish the idea of a finished basement. Sure, it’s great to have one any time, but as the winds swirl and snow blows outside, there’s something especially attractive about snuggling into a comfy couch or easy chair in your warm, bright, inviting subterranean space.
The thing is, most homeowners and some professional builders don’t realize how easy it is to finish a basement incorrectly.
Even if things look great on the surface, common d -
Cohen: Giving thanks for America and all its pioneering and resiliency
In July of 1931, Charles Lindbergh and his wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, set out to fly to the Orient. Four years earlier, Lindbergh had flown alone across the Atlantic Ocean, a Homeric odyssey.
Their route together that summer would take them from North Haven, Maine, through Canada to Alaska, Siberia, China and Japan. Aviation was still young and the flight was perilous. They were mariners of the skies.
When they reached Ottawa, they dined with a company of aviators, travellers, explorers, meteo -

Firefighters reported they were cooling the 100-pound tank.
Alarms sounded at the building on Leikin Drive near Merivale Road in the city’s south end at 8:44 a.m.
While on their way, fire crews learned that there was a fire in a construction area on the roof. They found the burning cylinder of propane and determined flames had not spread.

Det. Sgt. Jay Finn of the Kingston police major crimes unit said police were called to the emergency department at 6 p.m. following an altercation inside one of the wards between the inmate from Millhaven Correctional Institute and the correctional officers guarding him.

Denley: Ontario government isn't undermining francophone rights
Judging by the reaction of some of Canada’s top political leaders, Ontario must have imposed pretty significant cuts on services for its francophone citizens.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, “I was deeply disappointed by the decision of the Ontario government to cut services and protections for the francophone minorities in Ontario.” Federal Conservative leader Andrew Scheer has “concerns” about the cancellation of a proposed francophone university. Tilley: Shelter costs are rising and we need help from city hall
Imagine what life would be like if you had no home. That would be hard enough. But it’s even harder during the cold winter months.
Despite efforts by governments, from 2014 to 2017, emergency shelter use, length of stay (LOS), and chronic homelessness increased by 16 per cent, 12 per cent and 21 per cent respectively during that time in Ottawa. One consequence is current shelter occupancy rates: At The Ottawa Mission, we have been at over 100 per cent occupancy for 14 months, with no end i -
Saul: The environmental crisis is a moral challenge, not just a practical one
The data on rising levels of toxic contamination, ecosystem destruction, species extinction and global warming is not just a collection of scientific facts. It’s an ethical indictment of human values.
Chemicals from industry and agriculture are polluting our waterways; grasslands, and wetlands are being converted into farms and urban areas at an alarming rate; and climate change is killing people and destroying and displacing communities. As a result, humanity is driving species to extinct -

Letters: Why City of Ottawa must expropriate Somerset House
Time to expropriate Somerset House
Re: Owner of Somerset House would rather tear it down, build a replica building, Nov. 16.
So the owner of Somerset House has now got his sights set on demolition. Who doubts that this was his intention all along?
For years now, this once-elegant structure, a cherished Centretown landmark, has been standing as an empty hulk after a botched attempt at so-called renovation work in 2007. The partial collapse of the building that resulted was followed by years of th -
Forster: Here's who I'd invite to a dinner party of Canadian heroines
The debut of the new $10 bank note featuring Viola Desmond brings national recognition for the gutsy civil rights activist. But a recent Ipos poll shows we still have poor knowledge of heroines from Canadian history.
The pollsters asked participants to select Canadian women from the past and present who they’d like to dine with. The guest list was short and included only a few historical figures, such as Emily Carr, Lucy Maud Montgomery and Viola Desmond. Methinks the explanation is we sti -

Canadian War Museum acquires another Victoria Cross from Battle of Hill 70
The Canadian War Museum has acquired the Victoria Cross awarded to an officer who displayed bravery and leadership during a significant battle during the First World War. The medal was awarded to Lieutenant Robert Hill Hanna of B Company, 29th Infantry Battalion, who fought during the Battle of Hill 70.
With this acquisition, the museum says it now has four of the six Victoria Crosses awarded to Canadians for action at Hill 70.

Crime wave subsides in Barrhaven but transit questions remain
A wave of break-ins at homes in Barrhaven appears to have moved on, leaving the crime rate similar to the rate in other neighbourhoods, police and the area’s city councillor told residents Monday evening.
About 100 residents came to the Cedarview Golf and Country Club to hear about crime, traffic and safety in their area, some of them drawn by a recent jump in the number of residential break-ins.
“It’s break-ins, and daytime break-ins, taking a lot of cash and jewelry. And -

'Significant' medical emergencies on and off ice at Sens game
Two medical emergencies temporarily stopped play at Monday’s game between the Ottawa Senators and Florida Panthers.
Play stopped with 3:37 left in the first period as paramedics hurried into the 100 section of seats to help a sick spectator.
The man was in cardiac arrest, an Ottawa Paramedics spokesman said. “It’s a significant event and quite disruptive.”
It’s common to treat less serious medical problems, such as a person hit by a puck, by taking the person aside -
Do-it-at-home orthodontic services hit Ottawa, and spark questions from dentists
An American company offering a do-it-at-home teeth straightening service is moving into Ontario.
SmileDirectClub, a primarily Internet-based company that was founded four years ago in the United States with a pretty solid pedigree of investors, offers at-home teeth-straightening services.
The company’s Ottawa office, which it playfully calls the SmileShop, will open on Metcalfe Street on Dec. 5.
The idea is pretty simple. People who want their teeth straightened go to the company’s w
