"I feel like I just hit the game-winning home run in the World Series," says drummer/bandleader Ethan Ardelli
Toronto-based drummer Ethan Ardelli has spent the last two weeks in the Prairies and B.C., touring with his quartet in support of its debut album, The Island Of Form. It’s a swirling, engrossing listen, with Ardelli and three very poised and fluent players — alto saxophonist Luis Deniz, pianist Chris Donnelly and bassist Devon Henderson — taking bold trust dives with Ardelli’s evocative and intriguingly structured material.

'Awake and aware': Man found guilty of sexual assault in 'sexsomnia' case
A judge has ruled that a Brockville truck driver was badly impaired by alcohol, not suffering from a sleep disorder, when he sexually assaulted a woman at a party seven year ago.
Judge Kimberly Moore rejected Ryan Hartman’s defence of sexsomnia, ruling that he was “awake and aware” when he pulled down the victim’s pants and anally penetrated the woman.
“His actions were not involuntary,” Moore said in a ruling on Monday. ”I conclude he was awake and awar -
Parkinson: Renovating Parliament – cautionary lessons from Australia
Some years ago, I wrote a book about the physical, spatial needs of democracy, comparing parliamentary and city layouts in 11 cities around the world. I praised the Canadian Parliament on a number of grounds, primarily because of its openness: Protests are allowed on the lawn, members regularly meet constituents inside the buildings, and Canada Day celebrations occur all around the precinct.
It was, to some extent at least, the people’s building, because they performed -

Vehicle engulfed by flames on Hwy. 417
The occupants were able to escape safely but a flaming vehicle spewing thick smoke snarled traffic on the eastbound Highway 417 near the Highway 7 interchange Monday morning.
Ottawa Fire Services got the call at 6:42 a.m. and found the vehicle fully engulfed on arrival. They doused the fire and cleared the scene by 7:30 a.m. but reported that the haze and other motorists’ interest in the flaming wreck backed up traffic.

Traffic officers board school bus to nab distracted drivers
A $490 fine and three demerit points is a hard lesson so #leavethephone alone, say city traffic officers who boarded a school bus Monday morning to spot violators.
They were all aboard before 8 a.m. and promised regular updates on their catches throughout the day.
“Crotch-texting fools no one,” city police warned Sunday, adding that “Distracted driving is a leading cause of traffic injuries and fatalities in Ontario.”
The bus will be heading out with @OPSTraffic officers -

It’s still November, right?
There’s more snow and some frigid nights in the forecast before we see a bit of sunshine and then a warmer weekend.
For Monday, flurries end in the morning after adding up to 2 cm then it’s mainly cloudy, Environment Canada predicts.
There’s a 40 per cent chance of more flurries in the late afternoon and evening and “a few” more flurries begin near midnight with local amounts of 2 to 4 cm. The high is 2 C and low -5 C.

Fast times for the diplomatic corps: Bad behaviour includes stunt, impaired driving
It was summer, a time for getting out on the road, wind in the hair — and for a couple of diplomats, maybe a little too much wind in their hair.
Stunt driving? In an embassy car?
You bet.
Twice this summer, in a blur of red licence plates.
Documents received from Global Affairs Canada under an access to information request show one embassy employee and one high commission employee were caught driving more than 50 km/h over the limit in the period from June to September.
This is part of a d -
Today's letters: Winter storm priorities, propaganda wars
Who gets priority in winter storms?
Here we go again. At 8:45 Friday morning, I was on Laurier Avenue. Sure enough, the bike lanes were cleared for the 200 or so people who ride their bikes in snowy weather like that. At noon, the sidewalks were still not plowed, let alone the side streets.
Talk about a total waste of taxpayers’ money.

Thirsk: Why Canada mustn't step back from space exploration
Canada is a nation founded by explorers. As a child, I enjoyed reading stories of our Indigenous Peoples, the Vikings, La Vérendrye, Sir Alexander Mackenzie and others. Their exploits are vital threads of Canada’s national fabric; their personality traits – vision, perseverance, courage – distinguished early Canadians from other world citizens. Their ambition inspired me, as did John F. Kennedy, who declared that we explore space “not because it is easy, but becaus -
Coulter: Ontario must improve enforcement of animal cruelty laws
Horses, cows, pigs, chickens and turkeys across Ontario are facing a more frightening future since the OSPCA this fall announced it plans to cease investigations into suspected animal cruelty in stables and on farms. People are understandably concerned.
In Ontario, primary enforcement of animal cruelty laws is legally mandated to the OSPCA and its affiliate humane societies, which are charities reliant on donations. Around 70 officers try to keep up with investigating 16,000 complaints each year -
Egan: When change is not good: NCC seeks new boss as LeBreton gets dicey
The National Capital Commission is looking for a new chief executive officer. Could there be a worse time for a leadership change?
The LeBreton Flats redevelopment may well be the grandest thing the NCC will do since it was created in 1959 — save for skating on the Rideau Canal, but let’s not give the feds credit for inventing ice.
And the project is at a critical juncture, with an important update due at a board meeting this week.
The next six months, we are told, will reveal w -
