Just for kicks: The making of a CFL field goal
Lewis Ward made himself one of the stories of this past year in the CFL by making 51 of 52 field-goal attempts in 18 regular-season games, including a record streak of 48 in a row.
The 26-year-old Ottawa Redblacks rookie didn’t do it alone, though. Every time Ward succeeded, so did long-snapper Louis-Philippe Bourassa and holder Richie Leone and nine other teammates blocking at or near the line of scrimmage.
They call it “poetry in motion,” but it has to happen fast. In 1. -
CFL kickers getting markedly better over time
Larry Robinson, Tommy Joe Coffey, Don Sutherin and Moe “The Toe” Racine were talented athletes who combined playing other positions with place-kicking well enough to warrant Canadian Football Hall of Fame induction.
Coincidentally, none of them converted even 50 per cent of his field-goal attempts during a dozen Canadian Football League seasons or more.
In contrast, the top four field-goal percentages through the 2018 season belonged to active kickers: Calgary’s René -

Councillors decry Dec. 15 closure of aging family shelter in Mechanicsville
City councillors say the decision by city staff to shut down the aging Forward Avenue Family Shelter — which they learned of Thursday ahead of a Dec. 15 closure — only increases the mounting need to address a “crisis” in family housing and homelessness.
Councillors Catherine McKenney and Jeff Leiper said in a statement that they and fellow councillors Diane Deans and Mark Taylor pressed for protections for the displaced families at an emergency meeting with staff on Frida -

Owner of Somerset House would rather tear it down, build a replica building
The owner of Somerset House, the ramshackle building at a landmark downtown intersection, says he wants to demolish it and construct something that reflects Centretown’s heritage.

For years, and even up until recently, Shahrasebi has -

Snow scenes: Redblacks' Gott jumps onto plow for practice prep
Gott-a love this guy.
As Ottawa dug out Friday morning, Redblacks offensive lineman Jon Gott faced off against a different foe.

First big snow prompts school bus cancellations
It’s only Nov. 16 and we already have our first round of school bus cancellations.
Environment Canada has issued a weather advisory, so you know it’s going to be messy out there.
By the end of it all, we should see 10-15 cm of snow on the ground today.
School buses were cancelled early Friday from up the Ottawa Valley all the way down to Kingston and area, although there were no reported school closings. There’s a full list lower in this story.

Snow scenes: Redblacks' Gott jumps on to plow for practice prep
Gott-a love this guy.
As Ottawa dug out Friday morning, Red Blacks offensive lineman Jon Gott faced off against a different foe.
In his trusty tuque and work gloves, the Edmonton native leapt on a snow plow and pitched in to clear the TD Place field ahead of morning’s practice in a video shared by the team’s equipment manager, R.J. James.
“I think Jon needs a beer after clearing snow,” tweeted one fan.

OPP investigators hope to shed light on 10-year-old cold case
Ontario Provincial Police investigators are pleading for information on the 10-year anniversary of a Tyendinaga man’s death.
On Nov. 14, 2008, Derrick (Roy) Thompson left his home in Tyendinaga Township sometime between 6-6:30 a.m. to go hunting in an area well known to him. When he didn’t return home for dinner, his friends and family started to search for him. They found his body, with a single gunshot wound, in the woods at 10 p.m. near Blessington Road and Shannonville Road.

Weather: Snow to continue through day, risk of overnight flurries
Another five cm of snow is expected to fall Friday on top of that overnight blizzard for a total of 10 to 15 cm across the region since Thursday.
The flakes will become “light and intermittent” by afternoon or evening then stop Friday night as a deepening low-pressure system tracks northward.
“This is is the largest snowfall event so far this season,” Environment Canada reports for the news-that-will-surprise-no-one file, adding that “motorists should be prepared fo -

Nine years after the miracle baby, Ottawa community rallies to build new home for family
She is known as the miracle baby.
Océane McKenzie was still in her mother’s womb with two months until due date when she became the first Canadian to successfully undergo a revolutionary heart procedure. An ultrasound at CHEO revealed that Océane had a heart condition called critical aortic stenosis, which causes a narrowing of the main outlet valve in the left ventricle. Untreated, the aortic valve would sustain so much damage that Océane would die of heart failure be -

Today's letters: Off the hook on LRT, and corporate responsibility
Voters let them off the hook
Re: No firm launch date for LRT but signs of progress; and How tricky infill blew up an old family home, Nov, 14.
Ottawans had a chance to voice their concerns on the failure to launch LRT on time, and infill nightmares, in our recent election. The major’s election was a cakewalk with no real opposition, and most councillors were re-elected without any real opposition as well.
It seems the Ottawa is a city that never wakes up.
