The young woman testified she was so ashamed after she was allegedly sexually assaulted, she walked in a daze to a corner store and swallowed half the bottle of pain pills she bought.
She had only wanted a ride home following a late-night drunken argument with her boyfriend when the 1 a.m. text unexpectedly arrived from Jonathan Impey, his alleged victim testified Thursday at his sexual assault trial.
Impey pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting the woman at the opening of his jury trial earl

Szwarc: LRT project ignores Ottawa's low-income communities
Many Ottawans eagerly await access to the LRT. But for residents of Vanier and other low-income neighbourhoods, that train may never come. By continuing down a path that ignores the needs of the people who require affordable and accessible transit, the City of Ottawa excludes its most vulnerable residents.
Despite the delays associated with the LRT project – the hope now is that it will be up and running around the end of March, 2019 – it is being celebrated as one of Mayor Jim Watso -

Statement from Sajjan’s office on alleged rape shows little respect for the victim
Federal departments and the offices of ministers often use standard statements to deal with serious issues. Staff cut and paste these pre-approved messages and email those off to journalists so it appears like the department or minister in question is taking action.
One of these statements is “We take all allegations of sexual misconduct very seriously” or a variation of that. The Canadian Forces/Department of National Defence has been sending out this statement or something similar -

Santa taking it to the street on Saturday
Well, Ho! Ho! Ho!
It would seem that this week’s nasty weather is bringing a pleasant bonus: A chubby, bearded guy in a red suit on a sled.
Yep, Santa Claus hits the capital roads for the 49th time Saturday in the Ottawa Professional Firefighters’ Association Help Santa Parade.
He’s bringing festive floats, music and road closures. As usual, toys will be collected along the way, destined for kids in need this holiday season.
Santa’s Tour d’Ottawa kicks off at 1 -

Big snow on the horizon starting tonight, weather office says
Got your winter tires and boots ready to go?
We’ll likely be needing them with Environment Canada warning that 10 to 15 cm of snow is forecast to start falling Thursday evening.
While there’s still some uncertainty about the track of a deepening low-pressure system heading along the Eastern Seabord and how much snow it will dump, get ready for “poor winter driving conditions” for the Friday morning commute.
(Pity the walkers and bus-riders, too.)
Thursday’s forecast -

National Gallery offered to sell Chagall after Canadian Heritage wouldn't discuss money
The National Gallery of Canada moved forward with the sale of a Marc Chagall painting to purchase another artwork only after appealing to the federal government for financial help two years ago, and getting no response, access documents reveal.
After writing to then Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly in 2016, the gallery’s director says, he didn’t even get an answer to the letter.
At the time, the gallery was trying to buy a major painting in Quebec, called Saint Jerome Hears -

Harley Finkelstein is part of a new generation of philanthropists in town.
The kind who wears a black T-shirt to work, or commutes on a motorized skateboard, or rolls in a Mercedes-Benz ragtop coupe; the kind who ditches law to join a startup in 2010 in little offices over a restaurant and, eight years later, is chief operating officer when the company goes gonzo-global with 3,000 employees.
The kind who does it all before age 35. Yeah, that kind.
So now it’s time to give back, two-point-o -
Burtch: A time to remember the Canadian dead of the Korean War
On the Mackenzie King bridge, near Confederation Park, there is a bronze statue of an unarmed Canadian soldier standing with two Korean children. The Monument to Canadian Fallen, designed by Vincent Courtenay, a Canadian veteran of the Korean War, and made by Korean artist Young Mun Yoo in 2002, is inscribed with the names of 516 Canadians who died in the Korean War. Many pass by the monument every day.
Most have no idea that an identical monument stands nearly 11,000 kilometres away, in the Uni -
