A warm winter or a polar vortex? Two possibilities for Ottawa's chilliest season
In one corner there’s El Niño, a warm area in the Pacific Ocean that could make Ottawa’s coming winter a little milder.
But El Niño has an opponent this year, a potent weather-changing influence also in the Pacific that scientists simply call The Blob.
The last time a Blob formed, it gave us the icy winters of 2014 and 2015. Can anyone forget the words “polar vortex”?
Environment Canada doesn’t issue a formal winter forecast until Dec. 1, but alre -

Today's letters: More questions on the LRT
Five other questions on the LRT
Re: Waiting on a train, Nov. 14.
As mentioned in the article, the taxpayer is constantly told that the LRT delay is related to the sinkhole and two missing computer modules. Yet a trip down Scott Street or Lees Avenue shows the stations themselves are clearly nowhere near completion, and who knows what is really going on below Rideau Street?
Loosely based on the five questions put forth by reporter Jon Willing, may I suggest five questions that the mayor may not h -

Glavin: Terrorism prevention ideas good in theory, tricky in practice
Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale’s five-year, $35-million effort to detect, quarantine and eradicate the incubation of terrorism in Canada is slowly and tentatively rolling out in consultations, research initiatives and funded projects, and so far, so good.
It’s fairly uncharted territory. There is no example to follow in the United States. The Obama administration had funded a paltry $10 million for local efforts to prevent and counter violent extremism, but the Trump presidency -

MacKenzie and McEachern: Changes are needed to protect Ottawa’s heritage districts
Ottawa has 20 heritage conservation districts, ranging in size from the enclave of 23 modernist houses in Briarcliffe and small parts of Sandy Hill, to Rockcliffe Park and Centretown, with 600 to 700 properties each. Community associations representing these heritage districts ask Mayor Jim Watson and members of the new city council whether they will work with us to put an end to the steady erosion of the character that defines our designated heritage communities.
This erosion is occurring despi -

Q: This sofa was sold to us in 2000 as an 1830 Thomas Nisbet sofa by a dealer in a Niagara Peninsula antique centre for $3000. However, there is no label. How can one be sure?
Michael, Waterloo
A: There was a fine exhibition of Nisbet’s furniture held at the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre, Guelph, Ontario in 2012 (now the Art Gallery of Guelph).
A catalogue of this show titled ‘The Art of Thomas Nisbet: Master Cabinetmaker’ curated by David Nasby shows a good ra -

Police choir hails Stan Lee, late chronicler of crime fighters
“In the chill of the night, at the scene of a crime, like a streak of light, he arrives just in time!”
The Ottawa Police Chorus wasn’t hailing colleagues on the beat Tuesday night but the late chronicler of crime fighters, Stan Lee.
The group, which celebrated 45 years of song last year, launched into a cover of the Spider-Man theme to salute Lee.
While not as heavy as the famed cover by the Ramones, nor as swinging as Michael Bublé’s (yes!) take around 2010, the O -

Egan: How tricky infill blew up an old family home and messed with David Chernushenko
About 10 years ago, 26 Aylmer Ave. in Old Ottawa South was a fine brick house with plenty of breathing room on all sides — setting off its traditional porch and attic dormer, its old-bones feel — in a mature neighbourhood.
Then a portion of the lot on the Bank Street side was severed, and a tall, narrow house went up, making things tighter, if not a little visually jarring. And in 2016, a big addition was added to the rear of the brick house, a pale-sided box with nine windows on one
