The Rideau Transit Group says it has found the two train computers that, according to the City of Ottawa, went missing while the builder was trying to get the Confederation Line LRT up and running.
When the city revealed in September that the $2.1-billion LRT system wouldn’t be ready for a Nov. 2 handover from RTG, staff said the builder had lost track of two Thales on-board control computers, leading to a second missed deadline in six months. It irked the city when staff found out in late

Phoenix Pay: PSAC members may see change in union dues this week as system's backlog decreases
This week marks two points of progress in the bid to repair the Phoenix Pay system.
Public Services and Procurement Canada revealed Tuesday the backlog of pay transactions affecting federal government employees had declined to 303,000 on Oct. 31. This marked the ninth straight pay period during which the department processed more pay transactions than it received — last Jan. 24, the backlog was a hefty 384,000.
During the latest pay period, which covered six weeks, government pay officials -

Tree Canada looks for support to replace trees destroyed by tornadoes
Tree Canada, a national not-for-profit tree-planting charity, is hoping to replace as many trees as possible in the Ottawa-Gatineau area following the devastation caused by the half dozen tornadoes that touched down in the area almost eight weeks ago.
The organization’s #OperationReLeaf program is working in conjunction with the cities of Ottawa and Gatineau to provide funding for homeowners, landowners and institutions to replace destroyed trees. To reach that goal, Tree Canada is encoura -
Ottawa sees first flu death of the season
With the season just beginning, Ottawa has already recorded its first influenza-related death.
The death earlier this month of the unidentified person over 65 is a sharp reminder that flu can be deadly, especially for seniors and those with compromised immune systems, say public health officials.
“If you have an older person in your life, the best way to protect them is to get the flu vaccine,” said Lorette Dupuis, program manager of the immunization program at Ottawa Public Health. -

SIU probes Remembrance Day death of wreath-layer, 87, after OPP officer unable to revive her
On Sunday, Bobbie McCormack laid a wreath at the cenotaph as a mark of respect to those who sacrificed, like her late husband, Jack, one of 26,000 Canadians who fought in the Korean War.
A photo shows the 87-year-old braving the cold in her Royal Canadian Legion beret, scarlet cloak and matching her poppy earrings.
It would be her last Remembrance Day.
McCormack collapsed at the service in Clayton, near her home in Almonte, and could not be revived, despite what her family hails as the best effo -

Hip hop
The captivating young man in the yellow shirt at last weekend’s After The Storm benefit concert was Ottawa’s Cody Coyote. It was the latest in a series of terrific performances for the Ojibwe singer-songwriter/rapper and producer, who’s also becoming a convincing motivational speaker with a compelling personal story. Music helped him heal after being bullied in high school, while reclaiming his cultural traditions helped him renounce gang life and stay sober. He’s -

Ottawa Humane Society seeks owner of 'sweet' dog who may not survive injuries
The Ottawa Humane Society is trying to reunite a badly injured young dog who was hit by a car Friday with its family, even as they fear the animal “may not pull through.”
The female Rottweiler-cross was admitted to the Alta Vista Animal Hospital after being found on Heron Road near Mooney’s Bay by a Good Samaritan and transferred to the OHS the next day.
Vets are providing care, but describe the dog’s injuries as severe.
“This is a young, sweet dog,” OHS -

One hundred years, 200 kilometres, 164 pages.
The numbers tell the tale of cross-country skiing in Gatineau Park, whose history is documented in a new book by author and avid skier, Malcolm Hunter.
The book, The Trail Beckons: 100 years of Cross-Country Skiing in the Gatineau, had its official launch Tuesday at Crichton Lodge, the Rockcliffe Park home of Norway’s Ambassador to Canada, Anne Kari H. Ovind.

Seven suspects, including five youths, arrested in cellphone thefts
A quick stop by Ottawa patrol officers has resulted in charges against seven males, including five young offenders, in connection with a series of cellphone threats in the city’s west end.
Police said the suspects in the case used online classified ads to pose as potential purchasers of cellphones. When the suspects met with the would-be sellers, they would ask to examine the device and then flee.
Patrol units were alerted to one such interaction on Nov. 11 and arrested the seven sus -
Man charged with attempted murder in Nov. 8 shooting in Overbrook
Ottawa police have charged a Cornwall-area man with attempted murder in connection with a shooting last week on Queen Mary Street in Overbrook.
A shooting was reported in the area at about 4:04 p.m. Nov. 8. After an investigation, police arrested one man near the scene of the shooting. That man has not been charged, police said Tuesday.
Police later learned that a man was at a nearby hospital with gunshot injuries, which police linked to the incident near Overbrook.

Denley: Efficiency alone won't balance Ontario's budget
Ontario Treasury Board President Peter Bethlenfalvy is the guy with the unenviable task of trying to make the provincial government more efficient. His results will go a long way towards determining the success, or failure, of the Ford government’s attempt to eliminate a $15-billion deficit.
That’s a subject we will hear more about later this week, when Finance Minister Vic Fedeli releases his first review of the province’s financial situation.

House Works: Your questions on buffing stainless steel, swinging doors, tiling bathroom walls
Stainless steel appliance finish
Q: Can I use an abrasive rubbing pad to create an even appearance on my scratched stainless steel dishwasher?
A: Yes, your idea should work well. I’d use a 3M silicon carbide rubbing pad in the “fine” grade and see what happens when rubbed in a small area.
I’ve used this sort of thing on metal and it creates a nice appearance. The trick is getting an even finish in areas with a handle or curves.

Cohen: The Democrats exceeded expectations in U.S. midterms
They were not finished counting the ballots in the eastern United States — and the polls were not even closed in the west — when the canard begin to take flight that the Democrats had blown the midterm elections.
James Carville, the veteran political strategist, declared on CNN that this was “no blue wave.” So did host Jake Tapper. As the party’s stars seemed to falter in Florida, Georgia and Texas, this became conventional wisdom: The Democrats had underperformed. -

Drivers, turn on those rear lights
Have any Ottawa drivers noticed other drivers not using their rear lights at night? Although most cars have daylight running lights (in the front) that come on automatically, this is not the case for a driver’s rear lights.
I am shocked at the number of drivers on Ottawa’s main roads (including Highway 417) who do not have their rear lights on at night. During any given week it is not uncommon for me to notice four or five cars on the road that do n -

Ottawa concussion study shows adolescent girls slower to recover than boys
A new study by Ottawa researchers suggests adolescent girls are slower to recover from concussions than boys the same age — or younger girls.
In a large, national study conducted by investigators at CHEO Research Institute and the University of Ottawa, more than half of adolescent girls (ages 13 to 18) were still experiencing post-concussion symptoms 12 weeks after their initial injury.
By comparison, more than half of all adolescent boys were free of symptoms after four weeks.
