Gurski: Linking immigration and terrorism is wrong, here and elsewhere
I never knew my maternal grandfather. He emigrated to Canada in the early part of the 20th century from western Ukraine (or eastern Poland, the details on that are fuzzy) and settled in Montreal where he worked at the CPR’s Angus workshops, along with a great many other immigrants, I imagine. He married and had four children, including my mother, and toughed it out during the Great Depression. He died in the mid-1940s.
I seldom think of him but his memory came back to me last week when I r -

Sexsomnia defence unusual but not unknown
Sexsomnia is rarely used as a legal defence, but it is not unknown in Canada.
A review of the Canadian legal database, CanLII, shows that defence lawyers have raised the issue in at least a dozen criminal cases since 2005. It has led to retrials or to findings of not criminally responsible (NCR) a handful of times.
Most recently, in September, an Oshawa man was found not criminally responsible for sexually assaulting his girlfriend’s roommate due to sexsomnia, a disorder that causes p -
After two trials, two appeal hearings, Brockville judge to rule on 'sexsomnia' case
Seven years after she was sexually assaulted by a stranger during the night, an Ottawa-area woman will find out whether her assailant is criminally responsible for his act.
The accused, Ryan Hartman, 38, has admitted that he sexually assaulted the woman while sleeping on the same air mattress after a 2011 Brockville house party.
But Hartman’s defence lawyer, Margaret Bojanowska, contends he was asleep during the sex assault — he pulled down the victim’s pants and sexually -
Today's letters: How governors general (and others) spend
Qualified, but for which job?
Re: Blatchford – It’s not cheap being a public figure — but that’s not the public’s problem, Nov. 6.
It is interesting that the spendthrift habits of a former governor general have thrust the office itself into the spotlight. While I hold the view that the present prime minister’s appointments have all been ill-considered, I would hasten to add that I believe we need more women in public life, and I have a suggestion in this regar -
Cross: Taking it on the chin – Yes, beards continue to polarize us
What is this pogonophilia trend?
The current fashion trend of pogonophilia, the cultivation and admiration of beards and the people growing them – from pogon, Greek for beard – is polarizing. Pogonophobia is its opposite, the dislike of beards and the people behind them. There is no middle ground.
And it is a fuzzy world out there. Over the centuries there has been an ebb and flow in clip or grow. Alexander the Great banned the beard so it could not be grabbed in battle. The Romans i -

Only 40 per cent tested after potential exposure to improperly-cleaned medical equipment at Ottawa clinic
Only about 40 per cent of the patients who were sent letters warning that they may have been exposed to improperly-cleaned medical equipment at a Stittsville clinic have been tested for infections, according to figures from Ottawa Public Health.
In July, Ottawa Public Health issued a public call for 4,600 patients of the Main Street Family Medical Centre who had had minor surgical procedures to be tested for hepatitis C, B and HIV after the health unit investigated the clinic in response to a co -

We Are The Dead: George Jameson enlisted early in WW1, died at Ypres
Bricklayer George Jameson came to Canada in 1906 with his brother, William, in search of a more prosperous life than the one he had known in Yorkshire, England.
But when Britain declared war on Germany on Aug. 4, 1914, Jameson — like many of his displaced countrymen — dropped everything to answer the call to arms.
He volunteered for service on Aug. 12, 1914 in Winnipeg, and officially joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in Ottawa two weeks later. Then 30 years old, he stood -
