Ex-choirmaster gets probation after not challenging 19th sex abuse accusation
KINGSTON — Twenty-eight years after Kingston was rocked by revelations of child molestation by the man whose name was then synonymous with choir at St. George’s Cathedral, a 19th victim has been added to John Austen Gallienne’s account.
Gallienne, who now lives in Ottawa, appeared last week in Ontario Court of Justice to face two charges of sexual assault and one of gross indecency committed against an accuser between January 1985 and September 1987.

Deer and drivers: What to do when you're about to hit one
“To swerve or not to swerve? That is the question,” according to Leeds County OPP.

Sports offering chance to reconnect tornado-struck communities
Todd Nicholson and Emily Glossop lost their home in the Dunrobin tornado, but, even as they grappled with insurance and temporary housing, their thoughts kept turning to sports.
“Sport and recreation were not top of anybody’s priority list,” Emily recalls. “A roof, clothes and food were the priorities.”
No surprise there. But the couple felt sports could be another element in rebuilding shattered communities.

'When I went to lift him, there was only half of him there': Veteran Sam Jamieson remembers Korean War nightmare
During his second war, Ordinary Seaman Sanford (Sam) Jamieson was on board HMCS Iroquois when it came under enemy bombardment during an operation on the east coast of North Korea.
Jamieson, a veteran of the Second World War, had re-enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy soon after the Korean War erupted in June 1950.
“I figured it was the best place for me,” says Jamieson, now 93 and a resident at Ottawa’s Perley and Rideau Veteran’s Health Centre.

Editorial: What we wrote on Nov. 11, 1918 – 'THE WORLD SET FREE'
On Nov. 11, 1918, the Ottawa Citizen’s editorial page overflowed with jubilation at the defeat of Kaiser Wilhelm. Under the title “The world set free,” writers waxed at length about the end of the “dark forces of evil.” Here is an excerpt from the main editorial:
Kaiser Wilhelm II, German emperor and King of Prussia, has been stripped of the trappings of superstition and barbarism. As William Hohenzollern, he has no more divine right than any other man. It is a fit -
Winkelaar: Nine who died – the First World War heroes of one Ottawa church
Eighty-nine members of Ottawa’s Knox Presbyterian Church in volunteered to serve King and Country in the Great War of 1914 to 1918. Nine of them died. A brass plaque on the wall of the sanctuary commemorates them, but reading the names doesn’t help us to know them. Philip Winkelaar decided to bring those nine men down off the wall and make them real, by recounting their lives and experiences at home and in the service of their country in his new book, Going Down of the Sun. Each chap -
Today's letters: A toast to our protectors, and more on the WW1 medical ship
Forever grateful to our protectors
In November, we display our tremendous gratitude for those who have protected and continue to protect us. This year we also commemorate 100 years of the signing of the Armistice and the courageous people who fought in the First World War. Defending a country brings out many heroes; some have been written in history, others have quietly continued to protect our country.
My father, a retired DND pilot who rarely described his duties, made many sacrifices during h -
Simoneau: 'If people knew' – lessons from a Remembrance Day mass
I don’t know her name but I often think about her when I line up at Tim Hortons.
It was some time ago in a Canadian city.
My mother and I attend Remembrance Day mass. The church is small and discreet. There isn’t a lot of parking. I back my car into the only spot left, alongside a big red truck. Mom and I start to walk from the parking lot to the church, a few metres away.
A woman walks past us to the truck – hers, I now realize. I smile and she does the same. She’s rough -

Man who believed he could have sex with wife any time to have new trial
A new trial has been ordered for an Ottawa man who won acquittal on sex assault charges based on his honest belief that he could have intercourse with his wife any time.
The Court of Appeal for Ontario said the judge in the case committed a series of errors.
Ontario’s highest court said the husband, identified only as Mr. E., should not have been acquitted of sexual assault based on the belief — shared with his wife — that he could have sex with her whenever he wanted. Among ot -
