A 27-year-old Toronto woman is facing a slew of charges after allegedly fleeing police on Highway 401 near Brockville on Thursday.
Police said that, at around 11:15 p.m., Leeds and the Thousand Islands OPP received a complaint about an eastbound vehicle on the 401, police said in a release Friday. When officers tried to stop the vehicle, the driver allegedly fled. With the help of other OPP police vehicles, police said, the driver was eventually collared and arrested.

Wanted: Black vehicle believed linked to about 25 west-end B&Es
Ottawa police continue to be on the lookout for a suspicious vehicle that they believe is connected to a string of daytime break-ins in the city’s west end.
Police say they are investigating about 25 break-and-enters that happened in October and November, in which suspects have targeted jewelry, cash and small electronics.
In a media release Friday, police distributed photos of a black, four-door SUV with chrome trim. Although the photo is of a Chevrolet Tahoe, police say it could also be -

"I'm grateful that my son is home," says father of Cpl. Robbie Beerenfenger
Cpl. Robbie Beerenfenger’s father, Daniel Roy, visited his son’s grave in the National Military Cemetery this week on an overcast day that turned to rain. It’s a pilgrimage he has made faithfully in the 15 years since Beerenfenger died in Afghanistan.
On the afternoon of Oct. 2, 2003, a stack of buried mines exploded beneath Beerenfenger’s patrol vehicle outside Kabul.
“He was a good man. He was my only son,” said Roy, 65, a retired Para Transpo driver in -

Man who believed he could have sex with wife anytime to have new trial
A new trial has been ordered for an Ottawa man who won acquittal on sex assault charges based on his honest belief that he could have intercourse with his wife anytime.
The Court of Appeal for Ontario said the judge in the case committed a series of errors.
Ontario’s highest court said the husband, identified only as Mr. E., should not have been acquitted of sexual assault based on the belief — shared with his wife — that he could have sex with her whenever he wanted. Among oth -

Known unto God: How Canadians embraced their Unknown Soldier
The speeches were done, the dignitaries gone. The ranks of soldiers had marched away. Now sculptor Mary-Ann Liu had one final task at Canada’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It was nearly 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 28, 2000, six hours after the solemn ceremony had begun. An enormous crane lifted the granite lid over top the open tomb.
Liu, the winner of a national competition to design the tomb, and Maurice Joanisse, the Dominion Sculptor who created the granite sarcophagus to Liu’s design, -

Dancing Fleetwood Mac fan bruised, blames police
A woman who was forcibly removed from the Fleetwood Mac concert at the Canadian Tire Centre last Saturday — for dancing, she says — says she was injured in the incident and is consulting a lawyer.
Annie Phaneuf has posted photos of her bruised face and arms on Facebook. And a spectator from a few seats behind her added video that has been viewed 16,000 times as of Thursday noon, appearing to show two police officers struggling with her.
Phaneuf says that until she talks to a lawyer, -

The lone occupant of the home got out safely.
The 9:16 a.m. call led firefighters to a working fire at a home on Banning Road which was extinguished before it was escalated to a second alarm. It was under control at 9:34 a.m. and firefighters made sure there was -

Fearing for their safety, the Ontario SPCA is seeking four boxer-mix puppies that were allegedly sold online by a Cornwall woman while they were just days old.
Four other puppies from the same litter have been found and the society asks that anyone with information to come forward immediately, noting “we are very concerned for the welfare of these puppies.”
“If you purchased one of these puppies, we’d like to hear from you so we can ensure all of the puppies have been acc -
Backstreet Boys are Back (at Bluesfest), alright
Backstreet Boys are back in Ottawa, with a date at Bluesfest July 14.
About a quarter-century after the band broke out of Orlando, Fla., they’re embarking on their “biggest stadium tour in 18 years” in support of a new album, DNA.
The Bluesfest date falls right in the middle.
All in their 40s except for Nick (The Baby) Carter, who’s 38, the quintet has largely maintained a strong presence on the music scene. Most recently, they had a 14-month residency in Las Vegas, which -
Paul Klee exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada is 'for all ages'
The great 20th century artist Paul Klee had a deep admiration for the spontaneity and directness of children’s art. What better way, then, to conclude the National Gallery of Canada’s upcoming Klee exhibit than with a room in which children can create Klee-inspired art?
Opening Nov. 16 and running until March 17 next year, Paul Klee: The Berggruen Collection from the Metropolitan Museum of Art fills room after room in the gallery with 75 drawings, watercolours and paintings by t -

The world remembers: 16,000 First World War dead memorialized through display, free NAC concert
If R.H. Thomson had his way, we’d have two hours of silence to honour the fallen on Remembrance Day.“Two minutes is just not sufficient,” said the Toronto-based actor/producer in an interview. “If we stood there for two hours in silence, I think we would start to understand what happened.”His feeling that we should do more to remember was shaped while growing up, beginning with an old collection of family letters. Five of his great-uncles who fought in the First Wor -
MacDougall: Donald Trump is awful, and Canadian conservatives will gain nothing by supporting him
Donald Trump is a disgusting human being, a stain on conservatism and a blight on the body politic. So why are so many Canadian conservatives Trump supporters?
A recent survey found that 25 per cent of Canadians expressed “confidence” in the U.S. president. And while the survey didn’t disclose the domestic preference of those giving thumbs up to Trump, it’s a safe bet they don’t dig Justin Trudeau (or Jagmeet Singh, if they’ve heard of him).
Which would put th -
Tornadoes add to rental market woes in Gatineau, and probably in Ottawa, too
Almost a hundred Gatineau families are still homeless in the wake of a tornado that ripped through the Mont-Bleu neighbourhood on Sept. 21 — and a tightening rental market and higher prices is making it harder for them to find new apartments.
More than 215 buildings suffered damage or were destroyed in the tornado, affecting 1,686 housing units. In total, 2,112 people registered with the Quebec branch of the Canadian Red Cross and 250 families asked for help from Office habitation de l&rsq -

Today's letters: Tony Clement, long-term care, and an elevator pitch
Clement should have avoided this trap
Re: Conservative MP Tony Clement resigns Commons duties after sharing explicit sexual video of himself, Nov. 7.
It is mind-boggling that a veteran politician such as Tony Clement would succumb to a classic “honey trap.” It’s a good thing the Russians did not pull the same stunt while he was a powerful minister in Stephen Harper’s cabinet. Or did they?

Shannon: Here's why we teach To Kill a Mockingbird
The Peel District School board has recommended that its teachers not teach To Kill A Mockingbird. Although the board argues that is not a ban of the book, teachers are reacting. As a retired educator with 30 years of experience as an English teacher, at both the school and district level, I have many concerns with the recommendation and with the process, as it undermines the professionalism of teachers and ignores the purpose of teaching literature.
To Kill A Mockingbird is about discrimination
