Public interest in Remembrance Day still strong after 100 years
Public interest in Remembrance Day events is staying strong and participation is rising over time, says a survey commissioned by Veterans Affairs Canada.
Ninety-one per cent of Canadians said last Remembrance Day that they or their immediate families participated in some way, mostly by wearing poppies or observing a minute of silence.
That’s a steady climb from 2011, when the figure stood at 73 per cent.
The only exception is in Quebec, where interest was found to be lower overall — -

Way North CD reviewed
Fearless and Kind (self-released)Way North
From the very first notes of its kick-off track, Fearless and Kind, the sophomore release from the quartet called Way North, announces that it knows how to get the party started.
That opener, Boll Weevil, is a boisterous, grooving romp for saxophonist Petr Cancura, trumpeter Rebecca Hennessy, bassist Michael Herring and drummer Richie Barshay. There’s probably not a better introduction to the genial interplay and rousing spirit that characterizes -

Cohen: U.S. mid-terms just returned democracy to America
Call it a wave, tidal or rogue. Call it a riptide, an undertow or a cross current. Deny it, defy it or dismiss it, there is a simple truth to the outcome of Tuesday’s U.S. mid-term election: It changes everything in Washington.
The Democrats control the House of Representatives, pure and simple. They will exercise their constitutional powers, pursue their political impulses and exploit every theatrical opportunity. After two years with a free hand in Congress, Donald Trump now faces a fier -

Can cities solve the world’s problems?
At a time when the international order is shifting, there is a growing focus on cities to help solve some of the world’s most pressing problems.
Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg — who took steps to tackle smoking, traffic deaths and obesity during his tenure running New York — is encouraging the rise of cities as solution states through a philanthropic program called Partnership for Healthy Cities, run by Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Glavin: Canada's 'business as usual' approach to China is cynical
The performance of the United Nations Human Rights Council in subjecting China to one of its periodic reviews in Geneva this week was everything critics have long pointed out about the UN system generally, and the UN’s human rights function specifically. It was a carnival of technocratic surrealism, polite uselessness and outrageous lies.
If that seems a bit harsh, then let’s just say it wasn’t exactly the best advertisement for the rules-based global order that Prime Minister -

Two fires on Canadian frigates, loss of power on a third ship not linked says navy
Preliminary investigations into the two recent fires on board Canadian warships and the loss of power on a third vessel on Monday have not revealed any conclusive evidence to link the incidents, the Royal Canadian Navy said Wednesday.
Fires recently broke out on two frigates within days of each other. Both fires started in the starboard gas turbine enclosure in the forward engine room of the Halifax-class frigates. In another incident a Maritime Coastal Defence Vessel lost power while on operati -

Police close Alexandra Bridge to nab climber
A 58-year-old man is facing charges of mischief and failing to comply with court orders after an out-of-bounds climb of the Alexandra Bridge on Tuesday night.
The man’s actions closed the interprovincial bridge for several hours and sent city police officers after him using borrowed fire department equipment to reach him and bring him to the ground.
