Ottawa police charge six with operating 'illicit' cannabis storefronts
Ottawa police said Tuesday they had charged six people with “numerous provincial offences” under new provincial cannabis legislation that requires retailers to be licensed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.
Police said they had seized “illicit cannabis products and proceeds” from storefronts on Rideau Street and Churchill Avenue. The six adults — three male and three female — will appear in court at a later date.

Egan: Ottawa's poppy champion and the mission to ensure nobody forgets
Bill McLachlan is probably the best poppy man in Ottawa. It only took a world war and 95 years of living.
He stands in Billings Bridge Shopping Centre on the ground floor — where an escalator spills transit users from upstairs — wearing a dark blue jacket, a perfectly-cocked beret, ten medals and ribbons, a bloom of pins and crests, a thinning moustache, and eyes a little tired, a century being a heavy thing to hold.
He looks, in other words, like an old soldier, unbowed.

Health unit and police could play big roles in council's decision on cannabis stores
Recommendations from Ottawa Public Health and the Ottawa Police Service could be big factors in council’s decision on the future of cannabis retail in Ottawa.
When the city’s emergency and protective services department tables its report at council in early December, politicians will be eager to see what health officials and police think about the private sector opening legal pot stores.
Several councillors have indicated that they’re waiting to hear back from the city’s -
Embarrassing Ottawa Senators video likely legally recorded
An Uber driver likely did nothing illegal when he video recorded a group of Ottawa Senators slagging the team and their coach during a ride.
The video was recorded in Phoenix on Oct. 29, the day before the Senators lost 5-1 to the Arizona Coyotes.
Arizona is a “one-party consent” state when it comes to privacy, meaning that conversations can be recorded if one person “who is present during the communication” gives their OK. If the driver knew the camera was there and reco -

Final secret of Ottawa's killdeer Bluesnest revealed: How much it all cost
The National Capital Commission spent nearly $4,000 to protect and relocate the Bluesfest Bluesnest last summer, documents released to Parliament reveal.
Roughly half of that — $1,948 — was spent to hire a private security guard from the firm Harris Security, which provided 24-hour protection for the killdeer nest after it was discovered on the Bluesfest grounds in June. It cost another $2,007 for a total of 55.5 hours work by four NCC biologists involved in relocating the nest.

Traffic deaths are an international health scourge — but where is the outrage?
BANGKOK, Thailand — Eight years after her daughter was killed by a drunk driver, Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter Zoleka is pleading for the world to do better at reducing traffic deaths.

Shopify bans some right-wing groups after activist pressure
Shopify Inc. will ban some right-wing organizations from its service after accusations from activists, such as Canadian non-profit group North99, that it was supporting hate-promoting groups.

The move affects Proud Boys, a right-wing group founded by Gavin McInnes, a Canadian writer and co-founder of Vice Media, that was rec -

House Works: Brampton boasts North America's largest brick factory
Behind every manufactured product in our lives there are factories where automation, skill, precision and careful planning come together to make the things we want and need.
Some of these factories make items that are high-tech and fashionable — like phones and cars and computers. Other factories make things that are just as important, but simpler.
The Brampton Brick plant is a case in point. This neat, tidy, high-tech facility near the outskirts of Brampton, Ontario is the largest clay br -
A sphere of light: Edge of Peace video in Confederation Park tells soldiers' stories
This is why we remember: it’s to keep in our minds the sheer scale of the slaughter so that we never repeat it.
A century ago this week, Canadian soldiers were driving toward Mons, Belgium, during the final days of a four-year global conflict that took the lives of more than 66,000 Canadians.
After decades of population expansion, that number no longer seems quite as horrific. So think of it this way: had the same percentage of Canada’s people died during the past four years in a sim -
Cave rescue of Thai boys took international effort: WHO conference

Politicians like to talk about openness and transparency, but the actual culture at City Hall is closer to “Don’t ask, don’t tell.” Over the past four years, city staff -
