Council needs more time to figure out where people want cannabis storefronts to be located if the city allows pot retailers to open in Ottawa, one veteran councillor says.
West Carleton-March Coun. Eli El-Chantiry cautioned against rushing a decision on whether to opt out of cannabis stores, even though the province has set a deadline of Jan, 22, 2019 for municipal councils to opt out.
El-Chantiry said the city should take more time to assess residents’ sentiments about retail cannabis.

Maxim mom: Cover girl competition gives Ottawa's Jessica Smith a platform to talk about autism
When Jessica Smith heard that the lad mag Maxim was holding a contest to choose an unknown model as a cover girl, she decided to enter. Not because she’s hoping to launch a career in modelling, but because it offered her a platform to help people understand autism.
“I could use it for the greater good,” says Smith, 32, the mother of 11-year-old Reggie, who has autism. “Everyone knows someone with autism.”
Children with autism often feel left out because of their ina -

Courchene: Here's why acknowledging Indigenous territories matters
The following is submitted in response to the Oct. 27 opinion piece “Here’s why land acknowledgements are both meaningless and patronizing”:
According to Patrick Mascoe‘s recent opinion piece, acknowledging Indigenous territories is a meaningless and patronizing gesture that only has the “power to erase white guilt and restore Indigenous pride.” Backed by the opinion of an Algonquin scholar and sound bites from the prime minister, Mascoe notes that actions, no -

The man’s father held a vigil at the site, near Farrelton, Que., as local police, Quebec provincial police and investigators with the province’s labour safety watchdog met with the geotechnical engineers at the Wakefield-are police station.

Bloess: Ottawa municipal election showed why we need ranked ballots
Kudos to the winners in October’s municipal election; they worked hard and deserve to revel in their victory before entering the next phase of the political process, namely governing. However, as the winners celebrate, we should take another look at the numbers.
While some incumbents scored decisive returns (Steve Blais leading the pack with 89 per cent voter support), one-third of council seats were decided by less than a majority (under 50 per cent of the vote), the closest being in Alta -

It took an international effort to save boys trapped in Thai cave, say organizers at WHO conference
BANGKOK, Thailand — Most of the boys didn’t know how to swim. The Thai Navy Seal divers had no experience diving in caves. Oxygen levels were low and time was running out.
The rescue of 12 members of a Thai youth soccer team from a submerged cave last summer was mission impossible in many ways, those who led the operation acknowledged Monday.
Nearly four months after the remarkable rescue that was watched around the world, its organizers told an international conference on safety tha -
Tracey: How Immaculata's soccer partnership strengthens our community
As a longtime soccer player and a home owner in Old Ottawa East, I have been baffled by the hysteria and mischaracterization of the Immaculata/Ottawa Footy Sevens‘ partnership that led to the installation of an artificial field turf pitch and track at Immaculata High School.
I can understand that many readers will dismiss my views as biased. However, when following the controversy on both traditional and social media channels, it appears that the debate has been dominated by a vocal minori -

Egan: Crushed by tornado's fury, Renfrew man may never walk normally again
It was the start of their annual duck hunt on White Lake, a warm Friday afternoon of wild winds and alarming skies.
And the eight young men did not sense the coming dread — something was hunting them: an EF-1 tornado that, against miraculous odds, bore a narrow path of mayhem right across the uninhabited island where they were just setting up camp.
“I mean, what are the odds?” said Ryan Vincent, 25. “It literally crushed all our stuff.”
And it literally crushed Ryan -

Jenna Sudds wants city hall to know that Kanata North's tech sector is a big deal
If there’s one thing Jenna Sudds wants city hall to know, it’s how important Kanata’s technology industry is to the economic health of the City of Ottawa.
Expect to hear a lot about the booming business sector in Kanata North from the incoming councillor as she lays the tracks to get LRT to the western suburb far sooner than what’s currently projected in the city’s transportation plans.
“From a road-infrastructure perspective, we have unfortunately the morning -

Ditchburn: Why is no one talking about the Centre Block renovation?
By the end of 2018, when the Christmas lights are twinkling around Parliament Hill, the doors to Centre Block will close for at least a decade of sorely needed rehabilitation. You could get elected as an MP in 2019 and never work there, depending on your political lifespan.
It’s a beloved building for those who have had the privilege of working there, but we’ve missed the forest for the trees on this looming project. There seems to have been precious little public or parliamentary sc -

Canadian Forces misled media and public on $337,000 taxpayer-funded VIP booze flight
The December 2017 “Team Canada” tour – now more popularly known in some quarters in the military as “the party flight” – has without a doubt been a major public relations black eye for the Canadian Forces.
The tour, with VIPs who were supposed to boost the morale of military personnel deployed overseas, turned into a fiasco. Some VIPs on the RCAF flight to Greece and Latvia were drunk and abusive to the crew, in particular the military flight attendants. The V -
