  The notes played on a violin reclaimed from the Holocaust will have special resonance Wednesday evening in an Ottawa synagogue.
  It will be played to mark the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht — the name given to a state-sanctioned pogrom that signaled a murderous new phase in the Nazi campaign against the Jewish population in Germany.

  Ron Sweetman, an organizer and champion of Ottawa’s jazz scene since the mid-1970s and a CKCU radio show host for almost 40 years, has died.
  Or as his online memorial says, he “peacefully checked into the jazz club in the sky on October 24, 2018.”
  Sweetman, 86, founded the weekly CKCU jazz show In A Mellow Tone, named after a Duke Ellington song, in May 1976. He hosted his program until his retirement from radio in September 2015. The show continues, hosted by a rotation of jaz

  One person is dead after a mid-air collision between two planes that saw one of the aircraft crash into a field near the Carp Airport on Sunday morning.

  Marija Curran isn’t the first Beaver Boxing Club member to compete in a world championship tournament, but she’s the first in a long time and she is the first female club member to do so.
  According to club president Jill Perry, the list contains only two names: Gregory Gayle for the 1982 worlds in Munich; and Ian Clyde in 1974 at Havana.
  Clyde also competed in major multi-sport events such as the Pan American, Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

  Not only did you get to sleep an extra hour, you woke up to the sun shining. Yep, that bright light in the sky is the sun. I know its hard to remember, since it’s been a while.

  Ontario Provincial Police reopened all lanes of Highway 401 near Odessa after the eastbound lanes and one westbound lane had been closed because of a multi-vehicle collision on Saturday.
  Loyalist fire department’s Odessa station reported via Twitter that the incident, about 200 kilometres southwest of Ottawa, near Kingston, involved at least one car and a tractor trailer. The trailer had apparently flipped.
