Never let Roy go — Jazz musicians remember trumpeter Roy Hargrove, gone too soon at age 49
Roy Hargrove, a Grammy-winning trumpeter who flew the flag for mainstream and funky jazz for almost three decades, died Saturday of cardiac arrest, NPR reports. Once a young lion who burst onto the jazz scene in the 1990s in the wake of Wynton Marsalis’s successes, Hargrove was just 49.
The native of Texas was a larger-than-life, fun-loving figure who pursued both hip-hop-inflected jazz (with his band RH Factor) and timelessly swinging sounds. He was renowned for his love of sitting in at -
Today in the Petfinder: 'Willy' rescued from hot tub hell
This new home came with a jacuzzi … and a cat named Willy who apparently didn’t want to move.
The Ottawa fire department received a call Friday from a “distraught” pet owner along with the new owner of a west-end home after the animal had been hiding in the tub’s plumbing for two days.
The owner was in the process of moving out when the new owner spotted Willy while inspecting the plumbing. They tried to lure him out, but he just retreated deeper.

Dianne Sauvé sometimes finds herself looking at someone in public — on a bus, say — and thinking, “I believe that person has it, too.”
The “it” is acromegaly, a rare disease that can result in abnormal growth of the forehead, nose, jaw, hands and feet. Caused by a tumour on the pituitary gland that increases growth hormone, its other symptoms include joint pain, extreme fatigue, excessive skin tags, headaches, enlarged organs, menstrual cycle irregulari -

Wind, rain and a lot of miserableness in the forecast for Saturday
Hello darkness my old friend.
Ok, I think most of us are done with this rainy darkness we’ve been experiencing the last week or so. I already have the winter blues and November has just started.
But, if we can get through today, and if Sunday’s forecast is correct, the sun will come out AND with the switch back to Standard Time, we get an extra hour of sleep tonight. Except of course we loose an hour of daylight. UGH….

Today's letters: Former governor general Adrienne Clarkson should stop double-dipping
Former GG is double-dipping
Re: Former governor general Adrienne Clarkson still bills more than $100,000 a year in expenses, Oct. 30.
It is very upsetting to see this former governor general still taking taxpayer dollars to augment her career. Adrienne Clarkson leads a life of entitlement that far too few Canadians could ever imagine.
It is high time for this profligate spender to be cut off, and for the rules regarding spending (for retired officials) to be changed. She is double-dipping at our -
Editorial: Former governors general must account for public spending
Canada’s governors general have sometimes been selected for reasons of crass political positioning, rather than for their profound understanding of the core responsibilities of the office. So it should not really surprise us if they sometimes stumble into controversy – either on the job or later.

Hometown Hockey's Tara Slone brings rock-star resumé, role-model status to Ottawa
Tara Slone can accept, slowly and with a bit of prompting, that some kids probably see her as a role model.
Even if she didn’t, a quick glance at her resumé would give it away.
Slone has been a rock star, an actress and, for the past four years, a hockey broadcaster, hosting Rogers Hometown Hockey alongside Ron MacLean.
