The most unpredictable gangland Ottawa murder trial in recent history ends in acquittals
One of the most unpredictable gangland trials in recent history at the Ottawa courthouse — the first-degree murder trial of two men accused of killing drug dealer Mohamed “Magic” Najdi — resulted in two acquittals, leaving a packed courtroom stunned.
The verdict, delivered Friday afternoon, acquitting accused killers Nedeljko “Boz” Borozan and Mohamed “Shadow” Mohamed, silenced a courtroom of prosecutors and homicide detectives.

'Don Cherry loves goldfish': Canada's hockey host, Ron MacLean, talks good game
“It just so epitomizes the way we are. The game grew with the country, obviously; as the railroad moved across Canada, so did hockey, so the roots are deep. … It’s something that we can latch onto as having been ours from the start. … So there’s that. Then the qualities of the game: the fact that we huddle against the cold, the fact that it makes us winter warriors, which is kind of representative of where we choose to live. Pierre Berton used to always say that y -
Analysis: Meehan's Facebook folly shows why new politicians need to grow thick backbones
The bus didn’t show up on time and it’s the councillor’s fault.
The local library branch, under maintenance, was closed for a day and the councillor should suffer for it in the next election.
The plow hasn’t come yet and a sprinkling of snow has already accumulated on the neighbourhood streets, but surely the councillor’s street is pristine.
And don’t councillors know that residents pay taxes?
How are you going to respond, newbies?
Really, Carol Anne Meehan mi -
UPDATED: Deceased Quebec worker still trapped in buried excavator
FARRELLTON, Que. — Rescuers were still working Friday on a plan to safely free the body of a man who died when his high hoe was buried by a landslide at a West Quebec sandpit more than 24 hours earlier.
First responders had mere minutes to confirm that the unidentified man was dead when they were called to the scene near Farrellton on Thursday morning.
Police said Friday afternoon that the body might not be recovered before the beginning of next week. The responsibility for that rests with -
Theresa Kavanagh talks about working well with others and the joy of the race
Theresa Kavanagh was working at home raising two young boys when she dove into politics, running for the NDP in the federal riding of Ottawa West in 1988.
There was a buzz around the party, she recalls. Leader Ed Broadbent was popular. “It was an exciting time.”
Kavanagh lost that race to veteran city councillor Marlene Catterall, a Liberal.
No hard feelings, though. Thirty years later, Catterall endorsed Kavanagh in her successful bid for a city council seat representing Bay Ward.

Victim's family angered by not guilty verdict in dangerous driving trial
Andy Nevin’s father muttered “disgrace” as he walked out of the courtroom while Justice Catherine Aitken was still in the midst of reading her verdict.
The judge found Deinsberg St-Hilaire, 42, not guilty of dangerous driving causing Nevin’s death on June 28, 2015, and not guilty of failing to remain at the scene of the collision that killed the cyclist and father of two.
St-Hilaire had already pleaded guilty to a related charge of obstructing the police investigation int -

Don't take stairs on Parliament Hill — They're closed until at least spring
An outdoor staircase leading down the back of Parliament Hill to the river, already closed since the start of summer, will stay closed for a few more months.
The stairs themselves are in top shape. But there’s construction work going on near the top of the staircase, and that means the stairs have to be fenced off at the top.
Public Services and Procurement Canada announced at the beginning of June that the stairs would be closed for at least the summer and possibly longer. On Friday, they -
'I don’t really care who gets killed': SIU report details fatal 2017 crash in Arnprior, clears police officers
The driver of a stolen pickup truck was threatening to kill his ex-girlfriend’s family and others while engaged in a high-speed chase with police that ended in a crash that killed a 65-year-old woman last year, Ontario’s provincial police watchdog says.
“I don’t really care who gets killed but I thought I’d target one family,” the driver of the pickup — identified in the SIU report only as “Complainant 2” — is alleged to have -

Man found not guilty of dangerous driving causing death in case of cyclist Andy Nevin
Deinsberg St-Hilaire was found not guilty on counts of dangerous driving causing death and failing to remain at the scene, after cyclist Andy Nevin was struck by St-Hilaire’s truck early in the morning on June 28, 2015.
Justice Catherine Aitken rendered the decision Friday following closing arguments earlier this week from Crown prosecutors Lisa Miles and Julian Daller, and from St-Hilaire’s defence lawyer Eric Granger.

Mayor Watson makes peace in Twitter war, says he will unblock people
Mayor Jim Watson has ended a legal Twitter war with three of his critics by acceding to their contention that his is a public account, not a private one.

Eggertson: Six-per-cent solution on climate change isn't good enough
Many Canadians recognize that our climate is changing (not always warming; sometimes cooling too). Most of these realists understand that something must be done, and some hard-core believers even intend to take action that will minimize catastrophic climate change.
While international agencies warn that the time for dramatic action is much shorter than previously believed, our federal politicians continue to want temperature rise limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius without cranking up our air conditi -

Kurl: On carbon pricing, a polarized country retreats to its corners
As road trips go, the last few months of the Liberal journey toward implementing a price on carbon emissions from coast to coast has been rocky, crashing head-on into more than a handful of premiers over jurisdictional issues, and at risk of careening into the nearest ditch.
But if nothing else, the Justin Trudeau government is fairly adept at course correction. Having pulled over to the side of the road (no doubt in an electric vehicle) and checked the political GPS, it now appears back on trac -

The capital region’s jobless rate edged up to 4.6 per cent in October compared to 4.5 per cent in September, Statistics Canada reported Friday.
The slight deterioration reflected a net loss of 2,200 jobs offset in part by a decline of 1,700 in the labour force, which includes people looking for work.
This marks the eighth consecutive month in which the unemployment rate has been below five per cent, usually a sign of a healthy economy.
The net drop in the number of jobs came entirely on th -

Switch out detector batteries when you fall back Sunday
Get ready to fall back.
It’s a return to Standard Time at 2 a.m. Sunday.
In March, we set our clocks ahead one hour to make for golden summer evenings. Then, in November, we switch them back to make autumn mornings extra dreary.
Celebrate by switching out your smoke and carbon-monoxide detector batteries, the ever-chipper folks at the Ottawa Fire Service suggest.
At least we get an extra hour of sleep.
Zzzz…
The weekend is almost here. And you know what that means? A little R&R& -
Historic Moore Farm shuts down urban farming project in Gatineau
Too much clay and too few veggies have combined to end operations at the historic Moore Farm.
For three years, the community co-op running the farm grew and sold fruits and vegetables, and rented out the distinctive white building on Taché Boulevard for social events. The property is leased from the National Capital Commission.
But on Thursday the board of the co-op issued a statement that it can’t keep going.
The board “must conclude with courage and regret that the cessation -
