Ottawa's illegal pot shops step up as Ontario government store struggles to deliver weed
As the Ontario government’s online cannabis store struggles to meet demand and deliver weed on time, illegal operators in town are stepping up.
Five dispensaries were back in business on Wednesday. How long they will remain open is another question. Ottawa police warn they plan to close them.
Officers have visited dispensaries to give operators “one last chance to close down,” according to a statement from Ottawa Police Service Const. Amy Gagnon.

Priest charged in abortion bubble-zone flap to mount 'free speech' defence
A Roman Catholic priest charged under Ontario’s new “bubble zone” law protecting abortion clinics is vowing to challenge the accusation as a violation of his constitutional right to freedom of expression.
Father Anthony Van Hee, 83, a fixture on Parliament Hill for his anti-abortion protests, moved his silent demonstration across the street from the Morgentaler Clinic, on Bank Street near Sparks, on Oct. 24.
It wasn’t long before two Ottawa police officers came by to remo -

In rare move, second woman charged in hotel homicide gets bail
In a rare move, a Crown prosecutor has consented to the release of an accused killer on bail because the proposed conditions she has to follow do away with any “just cause” for detention, an Ottawa court heard Wednesday.
Tamara Bahlawan, 25, was granted bail Wednesday after the Crown agreed to those proposed conditions and her ultimate release back into the community pending her trial.
Bahlawan is charged with first-degree murder in the hotel homicide of Mohamad Mana, 30. Mana was bo -

Military contractor received $1.6 billion to advise Afghans but results unknown
The Afghan mission continues to be a money pit for the U.S. government and a cash cow for private military contractors. On Wednesday, the U.S. government’s Afghan mission watchdog produced a report on the Pentagon program to advise the Afghan Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the Afghan Ministry of the Interior (MOI).
The U.S. government’s Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) found that since 2010, the U.S. Department of Defense has awarded four cont -

Zibi to erect observation deck atop shipping container tower
Officials behind the Zibi development are moving ahead with a seven-storey tall shipping container structure, which will be used as a sales center for the development and contain an observation deck on its roof.
According to Cédric Tessier, Gatineau city councillor for the Hull-Wright District where Zibi is being built, the construction required special permission from City Hall to allow it to progress.
Gatineau does not normally allow temporary structures made from the shipping container -

Glavin: Does lack of diversity on city councils threaten legitimacy?
You might think it would be bad enough to show up again this year near the top of Demographia’s listings of cities with the least affordable housing markets in the world, and a rental vacancy rate of less than one per cent, and to have been reduced to ground zero of Canada’s fentanyl crisis, with a worldwide reputation as the epicentre of a global money laundering system run by organized crime networks in China.
You might also think it is a bit disturbing that Vancouverites are appar -

Ottawa-Gatineau bucks national housing slowdown as new home prices continue to rise
The nation’s capital bucked a national housing trend as the Ottawa-Gatineau region saw an uptick in new home prices where other metropolitan areas saw a slowdown, according to the latest Statistics Canada data.
The agency said in a release Wednesday the countrywide trend of slowing growth in new home prices in many census metropolitan areas (CMAs) was due in part to the introduction of market-cooling policy measures in Ontario and B.C., coinciding with several mortgage rate hikes.
