Guest column: We dare not let murderers define who we are
The world of caring, sensitive people was once again jostled just a short while ago by the horrific murder of 11 Jews who were attending a sacred covenantal baby ceremony in a Pittsburgh synagogue.
It is a tragedy of enormous proportions. Our thoughts are with the grieving families as they confront this unspeakable loss.
There are hardly any words that can offer comfort in the intensity of the grief. But there can be little doubt that the outpouring of genuine outrage, condemnation, and expressi -

Gatineau police will once again be handing out safety lights on the street and in some city parks to make Halloween safer for trick-or-treaters.
The collar device, sporting the police logo, slips on and off easily (but not too easily).
Parents can keep the device for future night outings with the kids.
The device will be available from patrol cars. Parents are cautioned to wait until the squad cars are stopped, and not run into the road to chase the patrollers.
They are also available between 5: -

Denley: Ottawa, there might be a better way to choose city councillors
A new and potentially better way to elect city councillors is on the radar in several Canadian cities. It’s time to ask if it would benefit us in Ottawa.
A ranked ballot system, where voters choose their three top preferences, was used in London, Ont., in this year’s municipal election. Voters in Kingston and Cambridge also supported it in a referendum, although that result is not binding. It will likely be under consideration in Toronto, as well.
There are advantages to a ranked bal -

Brockville police stopped the same vehicle twice in a matter of hours early Sunday, and charged two different men with driving it with the lights out, while drunk.
Officers were on patrol just after midnight and came across a vehicle being driven without lights.
An onsite interview detected an odour of alcohol on the driver’s breath, and a roadside screening device resulted in a warning alert.
It was the 39-year-old man’s second warning alert, resulting in an automatic suspension of -

Tuesday looking pretty fair, but rest of week all wet
Looks like a decent day ahead in the capital, with skies clearing Tuesday morning en route to an expected high of 7 C.
But clouds should roll back in Tuesday night with a 40 per cent chance of showers and the temps are expected to drop to 0.
Perhaps you should skip this paragraph. The rain should continue into Wednesday with a “risk” of freezing rain early in the morning. Sorry.
There could also be fog patches developing in the afternoon, so best to slow everything down on the r -
'These are not your grandmother's commercials': Kidvertising in the digital age
Advertising to kids on television is so old school. A new study of by University of Ottawa researchers found that 72 per cent of children and youth were exposed to food marketing through social media in a single 10-minute window.
“The numbers are shocking,” said lead researcher Monique Potvin Kent, an assistant professor in the university’s School of Epidemiology and Public Health.

Drugs in jails: Ministry says it doesn't keep track of overdoses and naloxone use
Ontario’s corrections ministry says it does not track the number of opioid overdoses in its jails, even though prisoners have died and staff are routinely treating inmates for overdoses.
That has observers of the jail system wondering how the province expects to combat a major health crisis and keep people safe without a full statistical picture of the drug overdose problem.
Last May, this newspaper sent a freedom-of-information request to the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional -
Today's letters: Why we must tackle the carbon problem
Atmosphere needs to stay in balance
Re: Letters – Stop staring at my soft drink, and carbon dioxide is not pollution, Oct. 27.
Letter-writers Colin Alexander and David Wieland asked why carbon dioxide is treated as a pollutant in the fight to protect against extreme climate change.
CO2, water vapor, nitrogen and oxygen are all part of the atmosphere and necessary for life as we know it. But none of us would survive in a room full of CO2, just as we would drown in a room full of water or ri -
'Woman of action': New councillor Laura Dudas sees so much to do in so little time
Seven new faces were elected to Ottawa city council in the recent municipal election. We’re profiling each of those new councillors as they prepare to take on their new duties. On Tuesday, Tom Spears talks to Laura Dudas.

On a Thursday afternoon, three days after winning the Innes Ward council seat, Laura Dudas was at Tim Hortons letting a medium coffee go very cold.
Not drinking the coffee was probably a good idea. She had barely slept since her win.
