Police board keeps background checks free for volunteers, but hikes fees for jobseekers
People who need background checks for a new job will pay more starting Jan. 1 because the Ottawa Police Services Board wants to avoid making volunteers pay for the documents.
The police board on Monday voted unanimously to hike the background check fees for employment purposes, largely in response to public feedback that called for background checks staying free for volunteers.
The police force had to find a way to raise $4.725 million from background checks to break even on providing the servic -

Award-winning Ottawa nurse says advances in cancer treatment have been 'amazing'
When Robin Morash began working as a nurse 35 years ago, the world was a very different place for cancer patients.
Morash, who was honoured over the weekend by the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology as oncology nurse of the year, began her career working with cancer patients and ended it helping to develop programs that assist those patients.
After graduating from Queen’s University, she began working on a surgical oncology floor at Toronto General, a theme that would flow through -

DiNardo: Fear of teaching Mockingbird isn't helping our students
Once again, a school board has proposed that teachers tread carefully if they choose to teach To Kill a Mockingbird. This, in 2018, not 1958.
The Peel District School Board recently issued a memo some are describing as a veiled threat that teachers will not be supported should they choose to teach the Harper Lee Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Apparently the decision is based on complaints from the school community. Was it a concerted group effort or the voice of one? Increasingly we are subjected -

Today's letters: Do we need political parties?
Don’t abandon political parties
Re: Why I’m not voting for any party next time, Oct. 22.
Policy researcher Themrise Khan says she is abandoning political parties and calling on others to do likewise. Unfortunately, her solution appears to betray a lack of appreciation of how the parliamentary system of government works.
The work of Parliament and parliamentarians – federally and provincially – is built around organized parties. Parties are both the organizing basis and li -
Sharpe: Ottawa school board must fully engage Black community
“We are so proud of how your group has advocated for your community.” This comment, made by an Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) superintendent, was directed at me after I had given a presentation on the need for race-based data to support anti-racism initiatives in the school board.
A coalition of Black community members had begun interventions at the OCDSB over a year ago to push for direct engagement on equity issues. The official’s comment was a reflection of th -
From rabbits to bison: Valley farmers find growth in niche markets
The modern face of farming in this region is changing. In the third of a multi-part series, this paper looks at the evolution underway in agriculture and how it’s changing our rural and urban communities.

After beating 16 others in Orléans, army veteran finds another way to serve, this time at city hall
Seven new faces were elected to Ottawa city council in the recent municipal election. We’re profiling each of those new councillors as they prepare to take on their new duties. On Monday, Jon Willing talks to Matthew Luloff.

Opinion PieceBy Sean Bruyea
Defence Watch Guest Writer
One thing consistently flies over the heads of Veterans Affairs Canada’s senior mandarins: the concept of accessibility for disabled veterans and their families.
The Veterans’ Stakeholder Summit on Monday is the summit of bureaucratic insensitivity when it comes to accessibility. Disabled veterans and their families will once again be denied accessibility to having a meaningful and substantive say in how their government tr -

The year Ottawa tech became a cash magnet
Ordinarily, this would be a very big deal. The day after Ottawa’s civic elections, software company Assent Compliance revealed it had raised $130 million from investors to finance future growth — one of this year’s biggest equity investments for a Canadian startup.
This was the third round of funding in just the past three years for the company, reflecting chief executive Andrew Waitman’s drive to create a global specialist in the arcane art of data management softw -
The waiting game: post-Tornado reconstruction goes slowly in Dunrobin
After the shock comes the wait. Five weeks after tornadoes ransacked parts of the capital region, victims are left to ponder their fate and why it seems to take so long to return to normal.
“We’re used to working 12-hour days,” says Julie Delahunt, co-owner of Dunrobin Meat and Grocery and the adjoining beer and liquor store. “Now I’m going stir-crazy working out of home on inventory.”
Her business, which Delahunt owns with her sister, Cindy, was the anchor te
