Pestering city to release more information on LRT project will continue next term, councillor says
At least one returning councillor will keep hounding city hall next term to release more information to the public — or at least to politicians — on the $2.1-billion Confederation Line LRT.
“It has severe financial implications and it also has safety implications,” Coun. Rick Chiarelli said, arguing that council has a duty to protect the public.
“Whenever you have a lack of oversight, you risk significant shenanigans.”

Shopify shares jump 12 per cent on positive Q3 news
Shopify shares jumped 12 per cent Thursday after the Ottawa firm reported a 58 per cent year over year jump in third quarter revenues to $270.1 million. This was significantly ahead of the consensus estimate of $255 million. (All figures in U.S. dollars.)
The e-commerce technology firm also reported an unexpectedly wide operating loss of $31.4 million for the third quarter ended Sept. 30, compared to the consensus projection of a loss of $24.4 million, according to Thomson Reuters. However, -
Tornadoes delay delivery of flu vaccine in Ottawa — but they should arrive soon
Some flu shot clinics have been postponed because the tornadoes that ripped through the Ottawa region in September knocked out power to refrigerators and vaccine had to be thrown out. But Ottawa Public Health says it will deliver fresh vaccine across the city by Friday.
Flu vaccine must be stored at temperatures between 2 C and 8 C. Refrigeration failed last month at 139 of the approximately 520 Ottawa providers of flu shots, forcing some physicians and clinics to cancel vaccination sessions sch -

Glass in Ottawa's LRT stations could lead to more bird deaths, activist says
The extensive amount of clear glass surrounding the city’s new Light Rail Transit stations poses a serious threat to the city’s bird population, says an Ottawa activist.
Anouk Hoedeman, founder of Safe Wings Ottawa, which lobbies to make structures in the city safe for birds, says Ottawa sees more than 250,000 bird deaths annually as a result of clear glass on buildings.
“What we have in these stations is an awful lot of glass,” said Hoedeman. “We already have a big -

Bank robber unmasked by trail of evidence: Police
An armed robber donned what police describe as a heavy disguise for a knifepoint bank heist earlier this month.
But he was unmasked by detectives who identified him and arrested him Wednesday thanks to the “critical pieces of evidence” that left behind near the Montreal Road bank.
Police were called to the branch east of the Vanier Parkway at about 10:15 a.m. Oct. 11.
A suspect robbed several tellers but a passerby saw what happened, followed the suspect after he left the bank and ca -
Lockheed Martin Canada lays off 20 employees in Ottawa, 11 in Dartmouth, Montreal
Lockheed Martin Canada has laid off 20 employees in Ottawa and another 11 at its facilities in Montreal and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The employees were informed of the layoffs on Oct. 3, according to a Lockheed Martin statement to Defence Watch.
Irving Shipbuilding and Public Services and Procurement Canada have announced Oct. 19 that a BAE-Lockheed Martin consortium has been selected as the “preferred bidder” for the Canadian Surface Combatant program. That selection will now set off -
Maracle: Ontario mustn't backslide on education about Indigenous past
It was déjà vû. When the Ontario government cancelled curriculum-writing sessions this summer on truth and reconciliation, I was immediately taken back to 1998 when I was part of a team writing curriculum for the Ontario Ministry of Education.
At that time, I was working on Indigenous-focused curriculum in secondary courses on the arts, history and geography. The provincial government promised that this curriculum, developed primarily by Indigenous educators, would be mandato -
Sad secret of 'Bluesnest' revealed in access to information documents
Why did the killdeer cross the road?
We will never know for sure, but the fateful decision proved deadly to one of the chicks from Ottawa’s famous Bluesfest Bluesnest, documents obtained by an access to information request reveal.
“The parents abandoned the nest with one egg left and crossed Wellington to the other side, which is devoid of construction this morning,” National Capital Commission biologist Alexander Stone wrote in an email sent Canada Day morning to update senior -

Rubin: Ottawa's LRT – the secrecy continues
Ironically, it was on municipal election day – when the public gets to exercise its democratic rights directly – that a City of Ottawa official confirmed to me there are yet more secret LRT records.
This time, it’s some 100,000 pages or reports since 2014 from Ottawa’s Transportation Services Directorate detailing its observations, including photos, of the delayed, multi-billion-dollar LRT project.
I found that these records existed when I recently pressed the city t -
Boil water advisory for Gatineau's Buckingham area
A preventive boil water advisory goes into effect at 9 p.m. Thursday for some 2,600 homes in Gatineau’s Buckingham sector.
The advisory, due to watermain repairs, covers residents on the east side of the du Lièvre River.
Users should boil tap water for at least a minute before consuming it. The tap water is safe for bathing, laundry and doing dishes.
If the tap water is discoloured, open the cold water tap and let the water run until it becomes clear again.

Police probe new case of swastikas sprayed on school in Kanata
Police are investigating after swastikas were spray-painted on the glass doors of an elementary school in the Kanata community of Bridlewood overnight.
The hate symbols appear to be the work of the same vandal or vandals who targeted three Kanata schools in August.
Police were called to the Bridlewood Community Elementary School on Bluegrass Drive at 8:02 a.m. and said that they are continuing to investigate.
A spokeswoman for the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board said that the swastika -

Windows in disrepair, not inspected before senior fell to her death
A senior woman with dementia, who was known to be an escape risk, fell head first to her death in April after easily removing the windows in her room at Carlingview Manor, according to a damning inspection report released by the province.
It took the woman less than two minutes to take the windows from their frames at the long-term care home and plummet to the ground, according to security footage.
The windows, which were supposed to open no more than 15 centimetres to prevent falls, were in poo -
Skelton: How small nuclear reactors can help save our atmosphere
By 2009, smog in China was killing an estimated one million people a year – worse than the infamous London Smog of December 1952, when 4,000 were killed and more than 100,000 sickened. Just as in London, fear and anger gripped the Chinese populace and demands to do something rocked the nation.
The solution in London was to phase out domestic coal fires; in Beijing it provoked a sharp U-turn towards clean energy sources. Coal-fired power plants were scheduled for closure, new wind and solar -

Renovation Transformation: ‘A home that loves you back’
It’s all in the details.
At least that’s true for design expert Moneca Kaiser, owner and lead designer at Moneca Kaiser Design Build. She explains that every square inch—not foot—of the interior of a home should add value in quality of life and return on investment.
Kaiser has had many clients switch designers for that very reason. Attention to detail.
Just this year, Kaiser and her team finished a main floor renovation of a Glebe home. The owners, Anne MacIsaac and Chris -

The narrative has gone from carbon tax, to a price on carbon, to a price on pollution when in fact it is none of these things. This is clearly part of a continuing Liberal effort at income redistribution to bolster the middle class under the umbrella of e -
