Meet Lyra Evans, believed to be Canada's first openly trans school trustee
OTTAWA — A woman who was once homeless in Ottawa is believed to be the first openly transgender school trustee to be elected in Ontario and possibly in Canada.
Lyra Evans will become the school trustee for a downtown Ottawa district after garnering 55 per cent of the votes cast Monday as part of Ontario’s municipal elections.
Evans says she felt compelled to join the race after the Doug Ford government in Ontario announced it would revert the province’s sex-education curriculum -

Gatineau lifts preventive boil water advisory in Hull
A large-scale preventive boil water advisory in Hull has been lifted. Analyses and tests confirm that the water is safe to consume.
In a media release, the city of Gatineau advises that cold water taps should be left running for one minute or until the water gets cold before it is used (the same procedure should be followed with water fountains); and any ice made from tap water during the preventive boil water advisory should be discarded.
The preventive advisory period began Saturday, as a new -
Tornado damage costs insurers $295M
September’s tornadoes caused a massive $295 million in insurance costs, making it one of the costliest storms in Ontario this year — but not quite the worst.
The damage was roughly a two-to-one split between Eastern Ontario (more than $192 million) and the Gatineau region (more than $102 million) according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, which represents the industry.
The bureau says it does not receive a breakdown from the company that adds up totals from many different insurers, -

Kathryn Missen haunts David Dionne’s dreams.

'On time, on budget': LRT doesn't hurt Jim Watson, incumbents at the ballot box
The largest infrastructure project in Ottawa’s history is late, the city isn’t sure if it’ll recoup delay costs and no one knows when the trains will start carrying passengers on the $2.1-billion LRT system.
Yet, voters overwhelmingly supported a third term for Mayor Jim Watson and returned most of the incumbent councillors to city hall in the municipal election on Monday. Seventeen of the 24 council members were re-elected. Four current councillors didn’t seek re-el -
