Very special to have name up there with Vinatieri, Redblacks' record holder Ward says
Is Lewis Ward the most consistent kicker of all time in professional football?
Kind of, sort of … well, at least over a short term. And Ward’s name is now in the record book … and on Wikipedia.
The Ottawa Redblacks kicker, who a couple of weeks ago broke Rene Paredes’ Canadian Football League record of 39 consecutive field goals (accomplished over two seasons), booted a 52-yard field goal during Friday’s 35-31 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to eclipse the profes -
Hintonburg Park lets the dogs out for Halloween
About two dozen (mostly) patient dogs donned trick or treat costumes and took over Hintonburg Park Saturday afternoon for the city’s inaugural Halloween Dog Parade.
About two dozen doggos, with about three times as many humans watching, seemed to put up with the humiliating garb, which also included a bee suit, a giraffe, and an odd boxer dressed in hair curlers, house coat and duckie slippers.
The event, which also attracted incumbent area councillor Jeff Leiper, was in support of Do -

Two people were taken to hospital Friday night after the car they were travelling in was in a fiery crash near Chelsea.
Officials said the crash occurred just outside of Gatineau Park at about 10:30 p.m.
The victims in the sports car were semi-conscious when firefighters arrived and were taken to a Gatineau hospital for examination.
There was no word on their condition. -
How do I vote? Here is a municipal election day primer
You’ve heard the speeches, you’ve read the promises, you’ve made your selections.
Time to fill out that ballot.
Here’s a to-do list on what you’ll need on municipal election day, Monday.
Basic
There are 350 voting places in Ottawa, open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Voting places in some seniors’ residences and long-term care facilities can have reduced voting hours.)
Your voting place can be found on your voting notification letter, or can be located at https: -
Carricato: Higher property taxes aren’t the solution in Capital ward
I knocked on 17,000 doors during my campaign to become Capital ward’s next city councillor. One of the top concerns I heard from residents is the affordability of our neighbourhoods.
As home values rise in central areas at a higher rate than Ottawa at large, property tax increases disproportionately penalize our residents.
This isn’t just about your money – it’s about maintaining a diverse and lively downtown core.
High property taxes discourage young families from moving -

Quebec pledges $2M more to Red Cross for Gatineau tornado relief
Quebec will give $2 million to the Red Cross which will be added to the funds already collected by the organization to help victims of the Sept. 21 tornado in the Outaouais region last month.
During a visit to Gatineau to take stock of the help given to people affected by the tornado, Premier François Legault said on Friday afternoon that the additional money will allow the Red Cross to help people who are still staying in hotels, among others.
“With this, we’ll have money for -

Robinson: In Bay ward, independents vs. political (family) rivalries
Time to vote, with few, or many, options to pick from. What type of councillor do you want representing you? One who will tax and spend, cut and slash, or try to find a respectful balance? Status quo, or something new?
In 2014, Bay Ward saw six males candidates, three new and three returning (including the incumbent and the previous councillor (an NDP member).
Jump to 2018: five candidates, two female and three male, one returning and four new. A previous councillor’s wife vying to t -

Kennery: In College ward, I'll bring new energy to address road safety
After knocking on more than 20,000 doors in this campaign, I have heard from residents constantly that road safety is affecting the liveability of our community.
A new analysis by Carleton University’s Capital Current has confirmed these concerns, showing that College Ward is seeing more collisions involving pedestrians than any other ward.
Neighbours are concerned about missing sidewalks and poorly thought-out intersections. This is made worse because many of our streets are used as cut-t -
McKenney: How we can bring more affordable housing to our city
Most agree that everyone should be able to afford to live somewhere safe and affordable. But what we are not hearing enough of in this municipal campaign is details on how we are going to get there from here. How we are going to ensure that thousands of new units are built that are deeply affordable to those living in the lowest incomes.
Last year, the province gave municipalities the power to establish “inclusionary zoning” policies. If the city adopts this (and if the provincial go -
MacKay: A charitable appeal to the good causes that want my money
And so it begins: The cheery package from a charity arrives in the mail, informing me that “Your Holiday Cards are enclosed.” Christmas cards already? C’mon guys.
Here’s some breaking news: I don’t send Christmas cards, other than those via email. Haven’t for years.
Of course, the next postal arrival will be from another charity, kindly providing Holiday-themed return address labels to put on the cards I don’t send. Those labels will be placed on the pil -
Editorial: Watson for mayor – but a more diverse, independent council
Conventional wisdom suggests the political lifespan of public-office holders is about a decade. In running for a third term as mayor, after eight consecutive years in the job, Jim Watson is edging close to the abyss.
With stronger competition, he might have toppled into it. But there wasn’t stronger competition. No other mayoral candidate – not even the lively and creative Clive Doucet – measures up to Watson. So let’s re-elect him Monday.
This doesn’t mean the man -
More posthumous honours for Jonathan Pitre
Jonathan Pitre’s legacy continues to grow as two Ottawa organizations have announced they’ll be honouring the late Russell teenager with awards that carry his name.
Pitre died April 4 at the age of the age of 17 due to medical complications following a stem cell transplant he had hoped would halt the advance of his painful skin disease, epidermolysis bullosa (EB). Pitre suffered an aggressive and fatal form of the rare disease.
Kevin Keohane, president and CEO of the CHEO Foundation, -
Reevely: Watson's pledge on seniors and transit makes little sense
If tech magnate Terry Matthews cared to hop the No. 64 bus from his Brookstreet Hotel to his Wesley Clover stables, he’d pay less for the OC Transpo trip than a part-time Walmart clerk does to get to and from work.
The fact he’s 75 matters more than his billions, a loopy situation that Jim Watson proposes to worsen with more free transit for senior citizens.
The pledge is just tossed into Watson’s latest (and probably last) set of election promises: “Provide no-charge tra -
Multiple human trafficking charges laid against Ottawa man
A 27-year-old Ottawa man has been charged with a slew of human trafficking-related charges after a woman in her 20s complained to police earlier this month.
At the beginning of October, a woman contacted the Ottawa Police Human Trafficking Unit, which began an investigation.
In a media release Friday, police said they “strongly believe” there are more victims.

Town hall on curriculum overhaul tilts towards sex education
Ontario’s evolving sex education curriculum is still a hotly divisive issue, it was apparent at an otherwise low-key town hall meeting Friday evening.
Ottawa West-Nepean MPP Jeremy Roberts scheduled the meeting at 6 p.m. on a Friday, with predictable results: As the proceedings began, there were 22 people in a theatre with capacity for about 150 at Ben Franklin Place in Centrepointe. And the format only served to strangle any passionate exchange of views.
