The first municipal election in Ottawa allowing “third-party advertisers” to accept contributions from corporations and unions, independent from political campaigns, has attracted five advertisers.
The deadline to register third-party advertisers was Friday at 4:30 p.m. Any person, corporation or union could have registered as a third-party advertiser, collect contributions and spend the money after registering. It’s a new feature of municipal elections in Ontario.

Harpreet Singh: The 'third' candidate in Gloucester-South Nepean
A city councillor should act like the director of a $3.4-billion corporation (i.e. the City of Ottawa) whose primary role is to provide a long-term vision and transformational leadership for the ward. This was the premise I brought to the residents of Gloucester-South Nepean. I presented a clear vision that consists of engagement, growth and innovation.
Mine is the “third” point of view, one that moves forward from what has been accomplished in the past, and that notes what has not b -

Hitler's foreign minister was once part of Ottawa's high society
There has certainly been no shortage of cads, crooks, swindlers, murderers and worse who over the years have called Ottawa home, but none has come close to reaching the infamy attached to a young man who, a century ago, floated through this city’s social circles with a handsome and athletic ease.
It’s highly unlikely that guests at the Rideau Hall parties he attended back then had any inkling of what the “great future” of which he boasted actually held in store for him, t -
Eyeing legal edibles, weed giant teams up with Almonte chocolate-maker Hummingbird
Having won the Academy of Chocolate’s 2016 Golden Bean for making the world’s best bean-to-bar chocolate, the Almonte couple behind Hummingbird Chocolate Maker have to wonder if one day their company might be comparably recognized by the High Times Cannabis Cup.
That’s because Hummingbird, which was launched in 2011 by Erica and Drew Gilmour, recently partnered with Canopy Growth Corp., the Smiths Falls-based, publicly traded marijuana company, to press ahead with creating a TH -

In times of legal pot, downtown church still gets 'high on Jesus'
The good parishioners of downtown Dominion Chalmers United Church are offering another option in the legalized marijuana debate.
“We still get high on Jesus,” reads the signboard outside DC United’s church on Cooper Street near Lisgar Street.
The message, posted before Wednesday’s legalization, is an apolitical commentary on marijuana’s new status, said a church official.

'I got hair in here': How NOT to roll a joint
As Canadians, we can legally smoke weed now.
But it doesn’t mean we’re any good at it.
Stores across Canada are selling a variety of different products, including different strains of dried flower.
We got our hands on some.
So, what do you do with the plant once you have it? Well, most people would opt to roll a joint.
We wanted to make a how-to video to help out our fellow Canadians but, as you can see in the video, we are painfully inept at rolling a joint.

Reevely: This Monday's vote is about the kind of Ottawa we want
Ottawa’s election Monday doesn’t have one central animating issue that makes it easy to pick whom to vote for. And yet the future of the city is at stake on so many fronts.
After eight years in the mayor’s office, Jim Watson can rhyme off a list of projects that are done or well begun, many of them after years of stop-and-start work. The first phase of light rail — late, yes, but almost finished. A renewed Lansdowne Park. A new Ottawa Art Gallery and renovated Arts Court. -

How many government workers does it take to buy a TV? About 39 public servants and 300 emails
A federal government office on Queen Street wanted big TVs, and the BlackBerries were soon humming with urgent messages.
Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, in the CD Howe Building, decided just before the end of the last fiscal year to buy big TVs. And someone whose identity is secret did an Access to Information Act search of the details. Those details are now public.
The price isn’t a big surprise: About $40,000 for the 65-inch TVs (the number of TVs is a secret), and $ -

Adam: Ottawa mayoralty candidate Doucet weathers an uneven campaign
Clive Doucet is giving it his all on the hustings in the closing stages of the mayoral campaign. But going on the campaign trail with Doucet is a ride quite unlike any other. Doucet’s campaign, by his own admission, is somewhat helter-skelter; indeed, on the trail it looks as if things haven’t been properly nailed down. It is both refreshing for its unpredictability and startling in its lack of order. You take what comes along, ride with it and hope to end up in a good place. Which o -
