NCC warns of lane closures on Portage Bridge
Commuting across the river to (or from) Gatineau could be a bit slower Friday.
The National Capital Commission is warning residents that four of the six lanes on the Portage Bridge will be closed Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
The closure is necessary to allow for asphalt work on the bridge to be completed. The NCC said, one lane in each direction will remain open during the work, but travellers should expect delays due to the reduction in lanes.
The closures are not expected to affect pedestr -
'What a waste': Co-workers of Maheu and Smeltzer devastated by death and murder charge
The death of a young Alexandria woman and the arrest of her former boyfriend on a murder charge has “sickened” workers at the Halifax company where both of them used to work.
Emilie Maheu, 26, went missing on Oct. 11 and was found dead in a farm field near Lancaster two days later. Brandon Smeltzer of Bayside, N.S., 25, was brought to Cornwall on Thursday by Ontario Provincial Police after being arrested in New Brunswick. He was due to appear in court Friday on a first-degree murder -

Brown: What I will do differently for Rideau-Goulbourn
I am committed to working for residents to make sure the City of Ottawa spends our tax dollars wisely, such as fixing the $70-million annual roads and infrastructure funding gap. Council’s plan is to raise our taxes every year for the next decade to properly fund existing public assets. Instead of raising taxes, shouldn’t gas taxes that are already being paid by drivers be used to repair roads?
As Rideau-Goulbourn’s next councillor, I will commit to enhancing traffic safety by -
Large-scale boil water advisory in Hull begins Saturday
Residents of Gatineau’s Hull area are reminded that a preventive boil water advisory period begins Saturday, as a new phase begins in large-scale upgrade of the city’s water system.
In a release Thursday, the city advised about 70,000 residents of the Hull sector, with the exception of the Plateau district, to boil their tap water for at least one minute before either using it to cook, or drink.
The advisory is expected to last at least five days.

Reevely: A year later, Watson takes up rogue councillors' idea to raise taxes and fix our crummy roads
The property-tax increase Jim Watson is proposing to pay to fix our dilapidated roads and pipes is only a start on the work Ottawa needs, but at least it’s that.
If he’s re-elected mayor, Watson says, he’d be OK with tax increases of as much as three per cent a year, the highest of his tenure, with much of the money devoted to closing the “infrastructure gap” that’s only worsened during his eight years in office so far.
Recall how savagely Watson took down eig -

My Twitter account is personal and I can block who I want to: Watson
Mayor Jim Watson will stick up for his right to block people from following him on Twitter if they pester him, he said Wednesday, a day after three people asked for a court ruling that doing so is unconstitutional.
“This is my personal Twitter account,” he said in a statement relayed by spokesman Mathieu Gravel. “I have the right not to be attacked and harassed by the same individuals on a regular basis. I believe in civility in public discourse, and this type of behaviour woul -
Area police still seek first cannabis offence after major RIDE checks
Despite a major effort, police on both sides of the Ottawa River have yet to register their first impaired by cannabis offence since recreational marijuana use was legalized Wednesday.
Ottawa police said Thursday two major RIDE checks were set up Wednesday evening in which a total of 574 vehicles were stopped. The checks began at about 8 p.m. at King Edward Avenue near the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge and around 10:30 p.m. at Castlefrank Road near the eastbound ramp to Highway 417.

Yee: On Ottawa Council, where are the women of colour?
This year’s municipal elections come on the heels of a local push for women’s inclusion in city government and policy. In March, city councillors Diane Deans and Catherine McKenney brought forward a motion for a women’s bureau in order to conduct evaluations of policy through a gender-based lens at city hall.
The push came after international and local events such as the Women’s March and #MeToo movement spurred worldwide momentum. Federally, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau -

NCC reopens Gatineau parkways that closed after frost warning
The National Capital Commission has reopened four parkways in Gatineau Park that closed Wednesday afternoon due to frost warnings.
The frigid weather prompted prompted the federal keeper of lands to close the Gatineau, Champlain, Fortune Lake and Philippe Lake parkways. They reopened late Thursday morning.
The NCC said closing the roads is a regular occurrence in the fall because of the risk of ice and frost forming. The NCC does not use salt and grit trucks because of the environmental sen -
Pageau pokes fun at injury with old-school Halloween costume
Sens player Jean-Gabriel Pageau might have felt cursed when he suffered torn Achilles tendon during a training session just as training camp began last month.
But the 25-year-old is taking the setback with a smile, using Halloween to poke fun at recovering from the injury and surgery that will keep him out of the game for at least six months.
Pageau and wife Camille Beeby dressed a couple of oldsters. He’s leaning on a walker with a visible cast, she wielding a cane and both with grey wigs -

'Creepy experience': Billings Estate is haunted (and it's OK to be scared)
A mansion built over 200 years ago is the site of some spooky happenings this October.
The Billings Estate is a national historic site, built by the Billings family, who settled in 1812 and played an active role in shaping the Ottawa community.
And now it’s haunted.
At least until near the end of October.
Ottawans have four more chances to catch a chill at the Billings Estate Haunted House on the Hill: October 18,19, 26 and 27.

ARMCHAIR MAYOR: Make Ottawa the healthiest, cleanest city
On Monday, citizens of Ottawa elect a new city council. To help guide discussion, we’ve asked people for ONE idea that would make the city a better place – without necessarily breaking the bank. Today, Jake Cole challenges councillors to make this the healthiest city on the planet.

Ottawa does not currently show up on “best cities to live in” worldwide listings. But it could. Wouldn’t it be nice to know that we are healthier and live longer, that we ar -

Tornado aftermath: Sign from levelled Dunrobin home found 130 km away
The for-sale sign planted on the lawn of 161 Porcupine Dr. in Dunrobin vanished with the Sept. 21 tornado that levelled the family home.
Almost a month later, it turned up alongside grazing cattle in a field in Saint-André-Avellin in West Quebec, about 90 km away as the crow flies but which travelled an estimated 130 km, a reminder of the force of nature as tornado victims continue to recover and rebuilt.

Kovacs: It's time Ottawa City Hall listened to people in Somerset ward
From bylaws and barking dogs, to speeding cars and snow-clearing, your municipal government has the most impact on your day-to-day life. Your city councillor should be the connection between you and city hall, to help you solve the problems on your street. Your councillor should be your advocate for the community, to build strong relationships with other city councillors in order to gain support from colleagues for the issues that matter in your ward. That’s why this election counts.

Molepo: Elections for school board trustee in Ottawa are crucial
Interest in municipal elections often centres on the mayoral and city council candidates. Much less attention is paid to the election of school board trustees. However, with a change this year in the provincial government, and controversial issues affecting education reform in Ontario, it is vital that voters be more attuned to who they choose to elect as a school board trustee on Oct. 22.
The position of school board trustee is the oldest elected office in Ontario. Predating Confederation, trus -

Deachman: 'This is like Christmas for every pot smoker in Canada'
“The terrible thing about marijuana is that it rarely affects people alike. Under its sinister influence, some are exalted to a high pitch and made capable of mental and physical feats impossible before. Others go wild over music and want continually to sing and dance. Some grow quiet and poetic.”
That was the Ottawa Journal’s take on weed in 1938, when the cultivation of cannabis was outlawed. If my recollection of my own marginally heady late-1970s days under weed’ -
