Rideau Street pot shop defies government monopoly
A Rideau Street pot shop was one of the only Ottawa stores to hold out Wednesday against the provincial government’s newly-minted monopoly on cannabis sales.
The Ottawa Compassion Clinic at 487 Rideau St. opened its doors for business, as usual, at 9 a.m. and almost immediately began to serve customers.
“We’re just doing what we believe in,” said one staff member who declined to provide his name.
Phil “Nineties” Arial was the store’s first customer. Aria -
Police charge man with attempted murder, seeking another after violent home invasion
Police have charged one Ottawa man and are seeking a second on charges of attempted murder, breaking and entering, aggravated assault and use of a firearm, after a violent home invasion in Vanier Tuesday evening.
Ottawa police said two men forced their way into the home of a 25-year-old man in the 300 block of Lafontaine Avenue. They stabbed him numerous times, pistol whipped him and robbed him before leaving the scene, police said. The victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries -
The art of the joint: Ottawa native has created cannabis crafts for Snoop Dogg, Machine Gun Kelly
If rolling joints is an art, then the affable Ottawa native who goes as Cody VanGogh has earned his moniker.
After fashioning a pot portrait of a pal in coloured paper four years ago, the 31-year-old has gone on to make elaborate designs like a ship-in-a-bottle for the likes of Snoop Dogg and Machine Gun Kelly.
They can go for up to $1,000 — not including the weed — and range from a whimsical little cat girl he spent about 30 hours making for a competition (yes, that’s a thing) -

Truck-diverting tunnel lost in citywide election talk of key infrastructure projects
The next city council will decide how serious it is about diverting most transport truck traffic off downtown Ottawa streets using a truck-diverting tunnel between Highway 417 and Gatineau.
But a potential $2-billion tunnel with unknown funding sources has made only a ripple in the municipal election campaign, leaving the debate at the community level rather than building a citywide discussion about a such a massive infrastructure project.
With the election set for Monday, debates about large-sc -

“This is my personal Twitter account,” he said in a statement relayed by spokesman Mathieu Gravel. “I have the right not to be attacked and harassed by the same individuals on a regular basis. I believe in civility in public discourse, and this type of behaviour woul -

Glavin: China, not U.S., is greater threat to our trade 'sovereignty'
In all the deranged punditry, partisan histrionics and alarmist nonsense kicked off by Article 32 of the just-concluded renewal of the North American Free Trade Agreement – let’s call it the China clause – it is disheartening that the prize for hyperbole should probably go to the ordinarily level-headed Michael Chong. The Conservatives’ shadow minister for science and MP for Wellington Halton Hills, Chong was a respectable also-ran in last year’s federal Conservativ -

ARMCHAIR MAYOR: Bring more transparency to light rail
On Monday, citizens of Ottawa elect a new city council. To help guide discussion, we’ve asked people for ONE idea that would make the city a better place – without necessarily breaking the bank. Today, Mark Sutcliffe calls for great accountability methods for the soon-to-be-operating light-rail system.

Police were called Shoppers Drug Mart on Alkenbrack Street at 11:30 a.m. Monday.

Antiques: An artist who punched above his weight
Q: I’m intrigued by this fanciful watercolour I inherited that looks like gnomes riding a horse. I don’t know if it has any value but I’m wondering if it might have some history to it, as it doesn’t seem like an amateur work. It measures 11 x 23.5 cm (4.25 x 9.25 inches) but with no signature – just initials at the bottom right corner. The second initial looks like a D. I know this is probably a long-shot but I’m hoping you might be able to help.

Denley: Jim Watson flip-flops, but in the right direction
Behold, the new Jim Watson.
In a move the old Jim Watson probably would have called a 50-per-cent increase in the tax hike, the new Jim Watson says he is willing to let property taxes increase three per cent a year over his next term, a departure from his more familiar two-per-cent limit.
And there is more to the new Jim Watson. Previously highly skeptical of safe injection sites, new Jim now says he supports them, and will even pay for them with city tax dollars if other governments won’t -

How many disabled women are running? How many female candidates actually have a chance of being elected? What should the city’s Women’s Bureau look like to best engage a diversity of women?
The fact that, in 2018, we are still talking about gender representation on council is a sad testament -

How much does legal weed cost in Ontario? As little as $7.50 a gram
The weed at Ontario’s online government store starts at $7.50 a gram.
Ontario began the era of legal recreational weed Wednesday with a web store that offered more than 80 cannabis products from a wide variety of Canadian cannabis producers.
And the lowest prices at the Ontario Cannabis Store are competitive with the dealers and dispensaries that now supply Canada’s huge black market.
Statistics Canada estimates the price of illegal weed in Ontario averaged $7.34 a gram in the first -
