In the lead-up to Ottawa’s municipal election, this newspaper surveyed every candidate, providing them with a list of questions. It’s an exercise that’s meant to help residents get to know the candidates better and to get a firm sense of where they stand on important issues facing our city.
Our survey was broken into three parts: City issues, ward-specific questions, and an ‘about you’ section. Candidates appear in alphabetical order and surveys were completed and r

Expect checkpoints for pot-impairment, Gatineau police warn motorists
Warning motorists about special checkpoints, Gatineau police say they’re ready to deal with drug-impaired drivers when the recreational use of cannabis becomes legal on Wednesday.
A news release from the force on Tuesday said officers have been trained in drug-detection techniques, including roadside co-ordination tests. If those tests lead to a suspicion of impairment, the force says it has six “evaluating officers” who can be called upon to perform further tests, including ta -

NCC needs $83M to address 'critical' maintenance at 24 Sussex, other official residences
The National Capital Commission says it needs $83 million over the next 10 years to fix up its six official residences in the Ottawa area, including the iconic and currently vacant prime minister’s residence at 24 Sussex Drive.
More than a quarter of the commission’s properties are considered to be in “critical” condition, according to an NCC’s Asset Portfolio Condition Report for the Official Residences of Canada. The report, dated April 2018, was released publicly -

Traffic cam video seen at dangerous driving trial shows cyclist moments before fatal collision
Deinsberg St-Hilaire was driving 80 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, according to court testimony Tuesday, when his truck struck and killed Andy Nevin, a father of two who was cycling along Leitrim Road on June 28, 2015.
St-Hilaire, now 42, pleaded not guilty to dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and failing to remain at the scene.
He entered a guilty plea at Monday’s arraignment to related charges of obstructing police.
His non-jury trial is scheduled for three weeks.

Canada Post says pot delivery will roll out smoothly — just don't ask questions
Canada Post says the rollout of its national plan to deliver marijuana to customers will go smoothly, without straining a system that already delivers a million packages a day.

Doctors report seeing increased cases of syndrome related to heavy cannabis use
Growing numbers of patients have been showing up at Ontario emergency departments in recent months with a syndrome related to heavy, chronic cannabis use, the head of the Ontario Medical Association said Tuesday.
Dr. Nadia Alam, who heads the OMA, said she has heard reports of cases of the relatively unknown syndrome while travelling the province to meet with doctors. She is in Ottawa this week.

Nova Scotia singer-songwriter Erin Costelo releases her evocative new album, Sweet Marie, at the National Arts Centre’s Fourth Stage on Saturday. The first woman to win a production award at the East Coast Music Awards, Costelo challenged herself to record the new album’s 10 songs in just 10 days, a technique that keeps the music fresh and immediate. Cohen: The far horizons of Donald S. Macdonald
The ancestors of Donald Macdonald came from Eigg, one of the windswept islands of the Inner Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland. In 1793, seeking something better, they sailed for Nova Scotia.
They settled on the Northumberland Strait, where they could see the distant shores of both Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton Island. “We’ve been looking at far horizons every since,” he muses in his memoir, Thumper.
There are many Donald Macdonalds, he observed, “but likely -

Doucet: With Ottawa's municipal election, let's build a city for all
Elections matter. In the most recent provincial election, Doug Ford’s victory altered the destiny of our province. For Ottawa residents, this municipal election also offers a real choice: Do we stick with the status quo, or do we vote for a different vision? Do we want a mayor who fixes roads before building new ones, who will deliver a fast commuter train service at an affordable price for our city, and who will listen to communities before developers?
When Jim Watson took office in 2010, -
House Works: Your questions on insulating a garage door, weed-free flagstones
Insulating a garage door
Q: How can I add insulation to my garage door? I’m thinking of gluing pieces of 1/2” foam to the outside, followed by 3/8”-thick V-groove boards on top, finished with marine varnish over dark brown stain. Will this work?
A: This could look good at first, but I can see a couple of problems with your plan. One is the thickness of wood. They don’t make V-groove boards as thin as 3/8 inch and if they did there would be quite a bit of warping ov -

Elgin Street's Boko Bakery closing after 36 years
The Boko Bakery on Elgin Street is closing by Dec. 1 but take heart as the owners say “stay tuned” for future projects.
The business was established in 1982 and has become most famous for its whimsically-decorated cookies on themes from Pokémon to Pride Week.
In a social media statement Monday, “Yoko and the Boko Bakery Family” explain that their lease is up Nov. 30 and the owner wants to retire to spend more time with her dad, “Boko Grandpa.”

Ottawa police to meet legal pot with 'mega RIDE' program on roads
City police warn that they’ll be running multiple RIDE checks this week when recreational pot becomes legal including a “mega” version with multiple police agencies and MADD Canada.
It’s a “reminder” that impaired driving, whether it’s by alcohol or newly-licit cannabis, is still illegal, police said.
“While cannabis may be legal as of October 17th, driving high is not,” the Ottawa Police Service said in a release.

Fall's mixed-up weather sets in, turn up heaters tonight
It’s that in-between time of year when you need a jacket to leave the house in the morning, but carry it over your shoulder on the way home.
Tuesday’s looking like mixed skies with blustery winds, out of the west at 30 km/h gusting to 50 km/h through the day.
The high is expected to be about 10 C.
That should calm down in the afternoon, leading to a mainly cloudy evening, with a low of 5 C.

Today's letters: Sparks street, cars and climate change
Don’t squander Sparks Street’s heritage
Re : Armchair Mayor: One way to discover Sparks Street, Oct. 11.
I like Thomas Brawn’s letter about the buildings on Sparks Street. This is one of the finest collections of heritage buildings in all of North America. The street is not just renowned as the first outdoor pedestrian mall, but represents Ottawa’s history. Since Confederation, Parliament Hill was a symbol of Canada and the buildings on Sparks Street a symbol of Ottawa. T -

Those beautiful gifts to the PM end up in a warehouse
Deep in an NCC warehouse rests a humidor neatly filled with cigars, a gift from Raul Castro to Justin Trudeau.
Also in the warehouse are two gold Seiko watches, a Bedouin saddle and a carved Mexican owl. This is where a lot of gifts to Justin Trudeau go.
Others, however, go on display, often in official residences such as 24 Sussex Drive and Rideau Hall, particularly if they contain Canadian artwork.

Still in shock, Alexandria clinic appeals for help to solve homicide of young mother
Staff at the Alexandria Chiropractic Centre did not notice anything out of the ordinary with Emilie Maheu the day she went missing, a spokeswoman said Monday.
Maheu, 26, was found dead in a cornfield about 48 hours after leaving the clinic in Alexandria last Thursday.
“This is why this seemed so out of character and everyone felt that something was wrong,” said Suzanne Filion. “It was just surreal. The staff felt right away there must be something wrong here.”

Only one of 24 pot shops across Ottawa vowing to stay open past Wednesday deadline
At least two-thirds of Ottawa’s pot shops are in the process of shutting down this week in advance of the Wednesday’s historic launch of legal recreational marijuana sales in Canada.
According to a count by this newspaper, 18 of 24 pot shops across the city are either closed or have pledged to close by Tuesday evening, hours before a legislated deadline imposed by the provincial government.
