The investigation into the homicide of a 26-year-old Alexandria-area woman whose body was left in a cornfield is continuing, says Ontario Provincial Police.
Emilie Maheu, the single mother of a 22-month old girl, was last seen leaving the Alexandria chiropractor’s office where she worked on Thursday around 1 p.m.
Maheu was reported missing from her home in Green Valley southeast of Alexandria at around 8:30 pm. Her body was found in a cornfield around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Ottawa Votes: What you need to know about the candidates in Barrhaven
In the lead-up to Ottawa’s municipal election, this newspaper surveyed every candidate, providing them with a list of questions. It’s an exercise that’s meant to help residents get to know the candidates better and to get a firm sense of where they stand on important issues facing our city.
Our survey was broken into three parts: City issues, ward-specific questions, and an ‘about you’ section. Candidates appear in alphabetical order and surveys were completed and r -

Reevely: MPs and MPPs ask for trouble when they endorse city council candidates
Ottawa-Vanier MPP Nathalie Des Rosiers gave money to two opposing candidates for city council in Rideau-Vanier because she wants to encourage people to run for office, she says, but admits it was an error to endorse one of them using her publicly funded office.
Des Rosiers isn’t the only provincial or federal politician courting trouble in this civic election campaign but she’s probably the one who’s made the biggest mess of an endorsement so far.
Last week, Des Rosiers and MP -
'Hey buddy' were victim's last words to his 15-year-old murderer
It was two days before Christmas — 2:30 a.m. — and Madeleine Leclair’s tinnitus was acting up. So bad was the constant noise in her ears, Leclair felt sick to her stomach.
Knowing a neighbour loved to stay up late, Leclair and her friend, Keith Fitzsimmons, bundled up against the December cold in Vanier and stepped outside, hoping to borrow some Gravol from the neighbour to ease the nausea.
A few doors away, someone else was outside, too. He was just 15, hopped up on alcohol an -
Trailer Park Buds? Cannabis companies devise catchy brand names amid strict Health Canada rules
Officials at Canadian cannabis company The Cronos Group say they are confident the name they have chosen for one of their pot brands will not appeal to children.
It’s called Spinach.
The brand is for “fun-loving mature adults who are sick of hearing about kale,” says the cheeky explanation from the company that operates growing facilities in Ontario and B.C.
Spinach is one of the more fanciful names among the brands that will be on sale when Canada legalizes recreational p -
Clive Doucet follows trend of releasing donor identities ahead of Oct. 22 vote
Mayoral candidate Clive Doucet has followed a 2018 election trend of publishing the names of campaign donors ahead of voting day.
“At a time when there is great distrust and a severe lack of transparency at city hall, I feel I have a responsibility to lead by example and voluntarily disclose a list of financial contributions made to my campaign before residents cast their ballots,” Doucet said in releasing his donor list.
Doucet published a list of people who each donated $100 or mor -
Driver tried to ram police during traffic stop: OPP
An impaired driver tried to hit police before giving chase when they tried to pull him over in South Glengarry Township last week, the OPP alleges.
On the afternoon of Wednesday, Oct. 10, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry OPP attempted the stop after spotting an unspecified traffic violation on County Road 25.
But the driver wouldn’t stop and “attempted to strike police with his vehicle and fled the area.”
The officers were unhurt.
The next day, police located and arrested a susp -
McAllister: There's no such thing as a free (bus) ride
The City of Ottawa has a budget of over $3 billion. That’s our money, and it should be carefully managed to best benefit the residents of our city. Meanwhile, the provincial government’s actions on its budget demonstrate that the financial decisions of our new council will come under even more pressure. It is your vote that will select the councillors who oversee how this multi-billion-dollar corporation is run.
A good example is a recent proposal for fare-free transit.

St. Paul University joins Algonquin College in going smoke-free
Following the example set by Algonquin College last week, St. Paul University is going smoke-free under a new policy that takes effect Wednesday, as recreational cannabis becomes legal.
Algonquin College announced last week that it would be smoke-free under an interim policy from Oct. 15, 2018, until Jan. 1, 2019 while the college conducts “full consultations to understand the potential impact and develop a permanent policy.”
SPU’s new policy similarly bans the use of all -

More than 56,000 people in Ottawa have voted ahead of the Oct. 22 municipal election
More than 56,000 people have voted in special polls and the traditional advance poll ahead of the Ottawa municipal election next Monday, providing some optimism for a better voter turnout than 2014.
According to the city’s elections office, 41,163 people cast ballots on the advance voting day last Friday.
Combined with the 15,754 people who voted over four days of special advance polls, there have been 56,917 people who have cast ballots so far in Ottawa’s municipal election.

Chernushenko: In Ottawa, transit and equitable development are key
Twin crises are reaching the breaking point. A crisis of housing affordability and availability for the most vulnerable; and a climate crisis – with social and economic costs to all.
More than 40,000 families do not have housing they can afford, and too often it is mouldy and leaky. Today’s stock is not always located where employment, transit and basic shopping needs can be easily accessed. The “housing poor” are now also “transportation poor,” “energy -
Tornado aftermath: Calling 'Cam' for found painting
What looks like a youngster’s painting of a castle and tree under a sunny sky is inscribed “To Cam” and clearly once had pride of place on someone’s wall.
But about a week after tornadoes swept the region, it was found up a tree in hard-hit Dunrobin, just a few shards of its frame clinging to the remarkably-intact canvas.
It’s just one of the items recovered by volunteers, which have included war medals, old family photos and other items that volunteers including Ru -
How Ottawa police will test drugged drivers
With marijuana legalization just days away, Ottawa police have not only stepped up training efforts for officers to detect drugged driving but are also warning that if you’ve consumed weed, do not drive.
No police force in the country has conducted any “green” workshops because they’ve been preparing for a new reality that just isn’t legalized yet.
Training for Ottawa police officers, however, has included a trip to Phoenix’s Maricopa County jail, where inmate -

Ottawa man arrested in Quinte motel 'disturbance'
A 46-year-old Ottawa man was arrested when police responded to a “disturbance” at a Quinte West motel Sunday night.
OPP officers were called to the unidentified motel at about 9:35 p.m.
Marco Palazzi is charged with five counts of failing to comply with a recognizance and obstructing a peace officer, police report.
Police said a bail hearing was scheduled in Belleville Monday. -
Watson: In the election for Ottawa mayor, I choose city building, not city blocking
I always say that in politics, you either run on your record or you run away from it. I’m proud to be running on my record.
By all objective indicators, Ottawa has been moving forward over the past two terms. In the 2010 election, I vowed to bring back affordability, stability and vision to our city. I was honoured that residents gave me a strong mandate to bring back discipline and focus to City Hall.
By the time I ran for re-election in 2014, the city was getting back on its feet. I had -

Love: A double standard for Catholic school board supporters
In a matter of days, eligible voters across Ontario will exercise a fundamental democratic right by voting in the municipal elections. This right includes voting for school board trustees. Everyone will have this right except non-Catholic parents whose children attend Catholic schools.
Within the debate about whether Ontario should continue to fund Catholic education, there is the neglected fact that the Education Act, reinforced by local Catholic school board policies, restricts voting for Cath -

Training for Ottawa police officers, however, has included a trip to Phoenix’s Maricopa County jail, where inmate -

It's going to be warm, wet today but -4 C by Wednesday
The week begins with a mild, wet day but it will be sunny and downright crisp by Wednesday.
Monday’s forecast is for periods of rain beginning in the morning, southwesterly winds at 20 km/h in the afternoon and a high of 13 C, Environment Canada predicts.
Overnight, periods of rain end near midnight with west winds at 30 km/h gusting to 50 and a low of 2 C.
Tuesday is mainly sunny with increasing cloudiness near noon, a high of 9 C and low of 4 C. There’s a 30 per cent chance of over -
Preston Street pot shop prepares to close as legalization nears
Blayne Farquharson was feeling nostalgic as he helped a steady stream of customers at the Cannabliss marijuana shop on Saturday.
“It’s been a lot of fun here,” he said. “But just a few more days left. This is our last Saturday.”
The Preston Street dispensary will close Oct. 16, the day before recreational marijuana is legalized across the country.
Some of the people who work at Cannabliss plan to apply for a licence to run a legal marijuana store, he said.

Today's letter: Let's end Daylight Saving Time
Please end Daylight Saving Time
Once again we are approaching that dreaded time of year when we have to adjust all our clocks and watches. I have yet to hear a convincing argument to justify this inconvenience, especially because of the potentially serious impact on our biological clocks every six months.
In a recent issue of National Geographic, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that “even small adjustments in sleep can be problematic. The Monday after a daylight -
Khan: Canada can deal rationally with refugees
My family members were refugees during the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947. My mother was just a child with no understanding of why, one morning, her family left their home, their belongings, their entire lives to make a perilous journey with only the clothes on their backs. The kindness of strangers on the other side allowed them the opportunity to make a home for themselves in Pakistan. Had my mother lost her life as a nameless refugee along the way, I would not have existed.

Israel and Tribe: How NAFTA 2.0 signed away our digital future
As Canada claims victory for salvaging North American free trade, the true cost of capitulating to the United States’ blustering may be too high to warrant celebration. The long-term harms to digital rights and innovation policy that will flow from NAFTA 2.0 – officially the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) – are difficult to fully predict but unquestionably serious.
Setting digital policy in trade agreements is a bad idea. Agreements develop in a highly secretive -
Fyfe: The long-term cost of the Brett Kavanaugh saga
With the Brett Kavanaugh nomination to the Supreme Court completed and his first days at the office over, questions are being asked about the impact of this fiasco on the political system of our neighbours south of the border.
For the tragedy of this debacle is not whether Kavanaugh is guilty of sexual peccadillos or whether he is a mendacious partisan who is unfit for a lifetime job on the U.S. Supreme Court, but rather the long-term governance issue relating to the loss of trust by the America -
Freiheit: Let's stop shaming Ottawa's homeless and give them some hope
At Shepherds of Good Hope (SGH), “hope” is in almost everything we do. It’s in our name, reflected in our core values, in how we design our programs and services and is a big part of our brand.
Homelessness, at its core, is complex, as are its causes, and most often it is rooted in trauma. At Shepherds of Good Hope, our employees, volunteers, community agencies and partners are working to offer hope.
These are challenging times. Housing affordability in Ottawa is a significant -
Culpeper and Tanner: Canada's losing the fight against climate change
Three things are conspicuously weak in Canada’s strategy to combat climate change: We have insufficient resolve to reduce the supply and consumption of fossil fuels; we need better incentives to promote the development of and shift to renewable energy; and national and provincial plans to prepare for catastrophic weather extremes are absent. The urgency to act cannot be exaggerated. According to the most recent report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, global average surface -

Mother killed in apparent homicide leaves 22-month-old toddler, grieving family
The body of a young mother raising a toddler was found in a rural area outside Lancaster on Saturday, the victim of a homicide.
Emilie Maheu, 26, who had been missing since Thursday, was found at about 11:30 a.m. along the edge of a cornfield.
OPP in Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry did not give the precise location for the discovery but Concession Road 3 in South Glengarry Township — a gravel road flanked by cornfields, about 15 kilometres east of Lancaster — appeared to be the -
