Injection site client's fatal OD raises concerns of new naloxone-resistant drugs
Despite a rescue attempt with naloxone and intervention by paramedics, a drug user who overdosed at a safe injection site on Murray Street last week later died in hospital.
While no one is yet sure precisely what kind of drug was involved in the Inner City-linked fatality, it has led to speculation about wider use of naloxone-resistant street drugs that have different overdose effects. These new antidote-resistant drugs have already showed up in drug-testing done at the Sandy Hill injection site -

Criminal happy to head back to prison three days after bank robbery
KINGSTON —Kevin Penzes wasn’t looking for money when he brought a holdup note into a Princess Avenue bank earlier this week.
Life on the outside had become too much for a 37-year-old Kingston man with a long criminal history and he was doing what he had to do to get back into prison.
As he told the bank teller, he was “going back to RTC,” Corrections Canada’s regional treatment centre near Bath.
He got his wish on Friday, three days later, when Justice Allan Letourn -

'Kafka illustrated by Dr. Seuss': The saga that has divided Tay Valley
With only days to go before the electronic polls open in Tay Valley, the rural municipality has posted an integrity commissioner’s findings on complaints against one of its sitting councillors, who is now running for the position of deputy reeve.
The commissioner’s report recommended that Judy Farrell, just completing her first term in office, be sanctioned 45 days’ pay. Council has supported that recommendation.
More about that later.
The real question for now could well be ho -

Akram Khan leaves his mark with Xenos

The National Arts Centre’s dance season opened this week with the North American premiere of Xenos, the final solo piece by renowned British choreographer Akram Khan. It’s a powerful work that challenges viewers but also leaves an uncomfortable chill, seething with reminders of racism and violence.

Chapman: On Oct. 22, consider who will keep Ottawa safe
As president of the Police Association of Ontario (PAO), I would like to encourage Ontarians to become more informed on the significant public safety issues affecting communities throughout the province before voting on Monday, Oct. 22.
It can be argued that municipal elections are the most important vote you will cast. There is no level of government that is more directly responsible for serving your community than these locally elected officials. They can affect what your city or town looks li -

Yes, it's chilly and no it's not going to get that much warmer
If you’ve started to miss summer weather – bright sunshine, warm breezes, high temperatures – then you’re going to have to keep on missing it today.
At 7:00 a.m., Environment Canada measured the temperature in Ottawa (weather is officially observed at the airport) at a downright chilly 3 C.
Today’s high is going to be a not very summery 9 C. There’s also a chance of showers (mostly in the morning) and the rest of the day should be a mix of sun and clouds. -

King: Fix the democratic deficit at the school board
Addressing the democratic deficit at the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board should be a top priority this municipal election. Meaningful public input and consultation is a basic expectation for parents, students and residents, but for inexplicable reasons the board has not met this basic expectation.
A major example was the closure of Rideau High School last year. Under the closure process adopted by the board of trustees, there was a lack of full dialogue with the local community.

Gormley: Apparently Canada should only whisper when talking to the Saudis
Our former ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Dennis Horak, wants Canada to have a dialogue with the country; he may be gratified to learn that he and Saudi Arabia have a lot to talk about. They both agree that Canada should not talk about Saudi Arabia.
More precisely, the former ambassador says Canada should not “yell.” The yelling to which he refers was contained in this written statement released by Foreign Affairs: “Canada is gravely concerned about additional arrests of civil soc -
Today's letters: Let's be careful with cannabis around our pets
Beware of pot around pets
On Oct. 6, we were walking our two-and-a-half-year-old, 25-kg golden retriever named “Annie” near Manotick Public School, when we noticed that she had her nose down in the grass. We couldn’t see anything, but within seconds, she found something and ate it.
About an hour later, Annie was lethargic, could not stand or focus and did not seem to recognize or respond to us: she was in an alarming state. We rushed her to the Ottawa Animal Emergency & Spe -
Manotick couple's dog falls ill from suspected pot toxicity
A Manotick couple is warning other dog owners after their Golden Retriever fell ill with frightening symptoms that fit the warning signs of cannabis exposure.
Jeff and Margaret Rowe were walking Annie in the area of Bracken Field at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, when Annie seemed to nose and then eat something before they could stop her.
By 6:15 p.m. Rowe and his wife, a physician, could tell that something was wrong with the dog they’ve had since she was a 10-week-old puppy. When she couldn&rsq -
Police arrest woman for impaired driving after pickup at child's school
Police arrested a 47-year-old La Pêche woman who was “heavily intoxicated” when she arrived to pick up her young child from school Friday, then allegedly drove home.
Witnesses at Wakefield Elementary School reported the incident around 6 p.m., and, according to MRC Des Collines-de-l’Outaouais police, people at the school tried, but failed to “dissuade” the woman from leaving in her vehicle.
She left the scene with the 5-year-old child in the car, police said. -
