Reevely: City will fund supervised injection sites if nobody else will, Mayor Jim Watson says
If the provincial government stops funding supervised drug-injection sites in Ottawa and the federal government doesn’t step in, the city will have to find a way to pay for them itself, Mayor Jim Watson said Thursday.
This is a major turnaround for a politician who resisted these services in Ottawa for years.
“I think we have now four in Ottawa and they’re serving a very vulnerable population and we’d have to find, if the province cuts the funding — we’d have -
How to buy pot in Ontario: A consumer's guide to purchasing and using legal cannabis
In less than a week, Canadians will be able to buy weed legally. That’s about the only certainty as the country ends a century of prohibition against pot.
Will the pot-starved or curious come out by the millions to purchase their first legal joint? Or will legalization day be anticlimactic, considering anyone who wants to smoke pot is probably already doing it?
Whatever happens on Oct. 17, it’s just the beginning of the public policy experiment that makes Canada only the second count -

Nussbaum: Climate change solutions start right here in Ottawa
The conclusions in this week’s report from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are stark: The world needs to de-carbonize by 2050 or risk catastrophic impacts. Yet, greenhouse gas emissions remain on an upward trajectory. The critical work of reducing and eventually eliminating carbon as a source of energy will require sustained political will and public demand for action. But as much as the climate crisis is a global problem, solutions need to begin in our towns and ci -
Fusing Iranian and Western music, Hafez Nazeri strives to promote peace and unity
With Hafez Nazeri’s move from Iran to the U.S. roughly two decades ago came a string of formidable musical achievements.
The composer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, now 39, initially went to New York simply to study music. But his determination to create a musical fusion between Iranian and Western music led to concerts at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles and Carnegie Hall in New York that helped put his art on the map.In 2014, he released an album called Rumi Symphony Project: Untol -
Foggy conditions affecting some YOW flights
The Ottawa airport was warning passengers and people picking them up to check the status of their flights before hitting the road because the weather is affecting some flights.

The fog was reducing visibility, a spokeswoman said.
Environment Canada was reporting visibility of about 600 metres, light drizzle, fog and a temperature of 10 C at the airport shortly before 1 p.m.

NCC launches online poll on ways to preserve Gatineau convent
The National Capital Commission is asking for public input with ideas on how to best preserve the Congrégation des Servantes de Jésus-Marie convent in Gatineau.
The federal agency bought the property at 210 Laurier St., as well as the surrounding lands, for $7.8 million in 2016.
It’s launching an online survey to gather ideas for the use of the buildings on the property, which it believes could enhance Jacques-Cartier Park as a recreational and natural public space.

Ottawa Votes: What you need to know about the candidates in Capital ward
In the lead-up to Ottawa’s municipal election, this newspaper surveyed every candidate, providing them with a list of questions. It’s an exercise that’s meant to help residents get to know the candidates better and to get a firm sense of where they stand on important issues facing our city.

Photos and video: Hurricane Michael slams into Florida, charges into Southeast
PANAMA CITY, Fla. — The third-most powerful hurricane to hit the U.S. mainland in recorded history left a wide path of destruction across Florida and Georgia, destroying homes and shopping centres and felling trees that killed at least two people. And it’s not done yet.
Hurricane Michael finally weakened to a tropical storm on Thursday, no longer a Category 4 monster packing 155 mph (250 kph) winds. But it was still menacing the Southeast with heavy rains, blustery winds and possible -

Adam: Campaign offers few chances to compare Watson, Doucet directly
The municipal election is less than two weeks away, and despite the early excitement generated by Clive Doucet’s entry into the mayor’s race, the campaign hasn’t really captured the imagination. This was never going to be an inspiring campaign, but the hope was that Doucet’s candidacy would elevate the debate and give citizens real insight into the big issues.
It didn’t happen because there’s been no real, meaningful debate between Doucet and Jim Watson. When -
