Nakayla Baskin, 11, missing for more than two weeks
Ottawa police major crime investigators continue to appeal for any information that could help detectives find Nakayla Baskin, an 11-year-old girl who’s been missing for more than two weeks.
The unit, which typically investigates homicides, took the case at the end of last week. Detectives believe she is alive, but they need the public’s help, in addition to police work, to locate her and bring her home safely.
“We need the community to be our eyes and ears,” said Staff S -

Reevely: If Ontario won't try to stop climate change, we need to do a lot more to get ready for it
Premier Doug Ford’s signal achievement in his first 100 days leading Ontario has been to kill the province’s climate-change policy and replace it with promises.
He flew back from his western tour, having appeared with Premier Scott Moe and Alberta conservative leader Jason Kenney to rail against the evils of carbon taxes, to take a short Thanksgiving break and then rally once again in his Etobicoke riding Tuesday night, celebrating his three months in office.
In the meantime, the Uni -

House Works: Wood turning is a great home workshop hobby
Hold a stationary chisel against a spinning piece of wood and good things can happen. This is what turning wood on a lathe is all about. With the proper tools, you can make anything from a wooden writing pen to a large lamp body or salad bowl.
Working on a lathe is at least as fun as any other kind of woodworking, and the equipment you need isn’t complicated, expensive nor large. If you ever wanted to get into woodworking in a small, quiet, satisfying way, turning could be the start -

According to police, the man referred to the child by their first name, but could not provide their last name. Day care staff phoned the child’s parents who confirmed that no one else was authorized to retrieve the child from the facility.

Drug-store nightmare: An addicted Ottawa pharmacist's journey through the opioid epidemic
When he hit rock bottom, Ottawa pharmacist Joshua Ramsammy had lived under the tyranny of his opioid addiction for eight years.
It had already damaged many of the things he held dear: his marriage, his hard-won career, his ability to support his children. His addiction was fed by drugs pilfered from behind the dispensing counter — as many as 20 Percocets a day.
He would take the pills while filling customers’ prescriptions, then adjust the store inventory to cover his tracks. Wh -
ARMCHAIR MAYOR: Fewer cars, more transit would invigorate Ottawa
On Oct. 22, Ottawa residents elect a new city council. To help local candidates as they campaign, the Citizen features some ideas that would make the city a better place. Today, Brigitte Pellerin makes the pitch for fewer cars downtown – and hints at how that can be accomplished.

A Barrhaven man says he was celebrating Thanksgiving with a dozen family members Monday when a frantic young man pounded on his door with grim news.
Addison Esbit told the Citizen the young man was begging for help, saying he had just run over his friend with a piece of heavy machinery.
He was bare chested.
In his hands was a blood-soaked shirt.
Esbit called 911. Then he and his son ran off to the location of the incident, near the corner of Freshwater Way and Cape Jack Crescent in the community -

Cohen: What everybody knows about America
Everybody knows that Donald Trump is the accidental president. He was elected with just 46.1 per cent of the popular vote – the lowest of all but two presidents – having received almost three million fewer votes than Hillary Clinton. He is president because he narrowly won the Electoral College, America’s 18th century anachronism.
Everybody knows that Trump was not the victim of “widespread voter fraud,” as he says. His victory in the College was not “a landsl -

Pharmacist's ex-wife says life with an addict was exhausting, chaotic
Joshua Ramsammy’s wife, Sherry, lived through the chaos and trauma of her husband’s opioid addiction for seven years. She reflected on that experience in an email exchange.
Q. What do you want to tell people about your own journey?
A. The thing I would say is to try to be patient and don’t try to do this all alone. There’s a lot of societal pressure to have a perfect home and family and, sometimes, we would rather have everything look good than get help.

Former nurse Leigh Wardlaw has advice for those health-care professionals now battling drug addiction.

Wardlaw is uniquely positioned to offer the advice.

'Drug diversion' a growing problem in Canada's health-care system
On June 8, 2016, Kitchener nurse Leigh Wardlaw was assigned a homecare shift: Her job was to care for a 13-year-old boy dying of brain cancer and to administer him morphine every two hours.
Seven hours into the shift, the boy’s parents became concerned about the state of the nurse: Wardlaw was falling asleep and unsteady on her feet.
They asked the homecare agency to check on her and, when a supervisor arrived, she found Wardlaw in the boy’s room “swaying back and forth with he -
Advance voting in Ottawa way up in this year's municipal election
Twice as many people voted in the special advance polls for this month’s municipal election as did so in 2014, the city says, though the polls were open longer and in more places this year.
In 2014, 7,633 people cast ballots in three days of voting before the city election, in three locations: city hall downtown, Ben Franklin Place in Nepean, and the Cumberland public library branch.
This year, 15,754 people voted over four days at city hall, Ben Franklin Place, and community or sports cen -
'Serious' gas leak clears Dow's Lake-area building, homes
A Dow’s Lake-area apartment building, and some homes to the south it, were evacuated Tuesday morning after a gas line in the basement leaked a large volume of gas Tuesday morning.

Finding “very high levels of gas” in the garage and building, fire crews made the decision to evacuate the building and then homes south of the complex.

The board of directors of CARP Ottawa supports the Ottawa Health Coalition’s statement that long-term care should be a central election issue.
Over the last 30 years, despite many studies, hundreds of recommendations, millions spent on staff training and an unconscionable number of tragedies, there has been little significant change in the quality of life for the residents of our -
Heggart: Here's why Ontario needs an updated sex ed curriculum
My name is Scott Heggart, and you may have at one time heard my story. I spent a good portion of my young adulthood speaking about my coming to terms with my own sexuality. It was not an easy experience for me, even for someone born in 1993 to an open-minded family. My 13-year-old mind was horrified when I figured out what the thoughts and feelings I had been having meant. It meant I was gay. It meant I was other.
