• Ottawa Votes: Advance voting already outpaces 2014

  Voting at Ottawa’s six municipal special advance polls continued at a brisk pace this weekend, with more than 9,200 voters registering their Xs on Thursday and Friday, more than the roughly 8,000 who did so in three days of advance voting in 2014.
  A total of 5,249 voters cast ballots on Thursday, with an additional 4,022 doing so on Friday. Voting was scheduled to continue from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

  A Canada goose had special reason to give thanks this holiday weekend after Ottawa Fire Services water rescue crews pulled it from Mooney’s Bay with wire wrapped around a wing.
  Crews were called to the beach area at about 9:15 a.m. Saturday after passersby spotted the bird in distress.
  While the crew initially thought the bird was caught in fishing line, it was apparently trapped in hanging wires laid out to try to keep the birds away from the beach area.

  Investigators suspect smoking materials were responsible for a fire in an Elgin Street high-rise apartment early Saturday morning.
  Ottawa Fire Services received a 911 call at about 2:30 a.m. reporting that flames had been spotted on a high-rise building at 475 Elgin St.
  First responders arriving reported heavy smoke on the balcony and inside the 11th floor hallway.
  The fire had extended into the apartment, while heavy smoke spread through the building’s ventilation system.
