No one needs to go without a hearty meal this Thanksgiving with plenty of free food and fellowship (and ways to help) on offer around Ottawa.
“Our holiday meals are about bringing people together for a festive meal so that everyone has somewhere to go and enjoy the company of others,” said Marc Provost, executive director of the Salvation Army’s Ottawa Booth Centre.
They’re expecting 400 to 500 guests for turkey, potatoes and gravy, vegetables and stuffing capped off

King: On the hunt for a shipwreck here in Ottawa
It was the first official royal visit to the Province of Canada and an appropriate ship was needed.
The year was 1860, and Ottawa had recently been selected by Queen Victoria as the permanent capital.
Her Majesty would never visit Canada herself; it was said she despised traveling on water due to seasickness. Instead, she sent her son, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, to make the trip.
The 18-year-old prince would visit Newfoundland, the Maritimes and the Province of Canada -

Ottawa gynecologist faces penalty hearing for inappropriate, sexualized remarks
An Ottawa gynecologist faces a penalty hearing later this year before the province’s medical watchdog after it found that he made shockingly inappropriate remarks to two female patients.
The discipline committee of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario found that Dr. Roman Feigel repeatedly called one patient sexy and told another that her vagina was lovely and smelled sweet during a speculum examination.
Feigel flatly denied the allegations, but the discipline panel said it be -
'I fear for our clients': The Ottawa Mission already over capacity with winter coming
Every night in September — except one — 20 mats were laid on the floor of the chapel inside The Ottawa Mission to handle the overflow of homeless men in search of a place to sleep.
Reaching the overcapacity mark before winter has even begun worries executive director Peter Tilley. The Ottawa Mission, located on Waller Street, has beds for 236 people. Throughout September, it slept 256 on most nights, many on the floor. Tilley expects at least 10 per cent more will arrive each day onc -

In 1981, another pre-teen went missing in Ottawa. He has never been found
If Lonnie Boudreau is still alive, he would be 48 years old.
Lonnie vanished in 1981, a clever kid with a mischievous smile plastered all over the local papers and evening news. For a while, Lonnie was Ottawa’s most famous 10 year old.
He slipped out the basement window of his home on Pères-Blancs Avenue in Vanier on the evening of Feb. 5, 1981. His family was worried, but believed Lonnie would soon come home. As days rolled on without finding him, police believed Lonnie may even ha -
Nakalyla Baskin missing persons case a 'full scale investigation,' say police
Ottawa police say they are maintaining an “all teams” approach in the case of Nakayla Baskin, the 11 year old who vanished in the early morning hours of Sept. 25.
Police will be using all of the skills, resources and expertise at their disposal as well as acting on tips and other investigative avenues, said police spokesman Const. Chuck Benoit in a brief response for a request on an update on Friday.
“There is nothing we can share at this time as far as leads. It is a full scal -

Three in 10 ticks positive for Lyme, uOttawa research shows
Almost 30 per cent of black-legged ticks collected by University of Ottawa researchers across the city in 2017 were infected with the bacteria that causes Lyme disease — and the tiny ticks were both on the move and growing in numbers, according to a new report.
“Our study shows that tick populations are more widespread around Ottawa than previously thought,” said medical entomologist Manisha Kulkarni at the School of Epidemiology and Public Health. “Furthermore, ticks are -
Police charge Ottawa massage therapist with sexual assault
Ottawa police officers have charged a massage therapist with sexual assault in relation to allegations about an incident that occurred in 2018.
According to police, a woman in her 20s reported being sexually assaulted by the massage therapist in March 2018 while the two were alone in a treatment room at his clinic in west-end Ottawa.
John Ackerman, 52, of Ottawa has been charged with one count of sexual assault.
Police are concerned that there may be other possible victims and are asking anyone -
Reevely: Ford and Kenney build a new blue machine to take on Trudeau
Premier Doug Ford’s western swing to fight carbon taxes with Alberta conservative leader Jason Kenney is a rehearsal for next year’s federal election campaign, when they’ll be Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer’s most fearsome weapons against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Ford first attacked Trudeau with Premier Scott Moe in Saskatchewan.
“All the carbon tax does is take money out of the pockets of workers, families and businesses, and instead fuel out-of-control go -
Watson skips city electric-bus demonstration for fear of conflict of interest
Jim Watson skipped an OC Transpo demonstration of an all-electric bus to avoid concerns that he was using the city transit agency for a campaign event, his office says.
On Thursday, the incumbent mayor released a set of environment-related promises as he seeks re-election on Oct. 22. The list included a pledge to “implement an electric bus pilot project in Ottawa.”
Later that day, the city government invited reporters to a show-and-tell at a city garage, where OC Transpo would have a -
Dunrobin tornado was region's most powerful in 116 years, Environment Canada says
The massive tornado that smashed into Dunrobin was the most powerful wind storm to strike Eastern Ontario in more than a century, according to an Environment Canada report.
In its September Ontario Review, the weather agency says the Dunrobin storm did not match the intensity of a twister that smashed into Chesterville in 1902. A slightly less powerful tornado hit Rockland a year later.
The report adds a caveat: The powerful 1978 Masson-Angers, Que., tornado crossed over briefly into rural -

One-man blues band set to rock Shenkman Arts Centre
Need some ironing done, a meal cooked, or, perhaps, your tax return filled out?
Just take it all down to the Shenkman Arts Centre on Friday, Oct. 12 where blues guitarist Steve Hill is playing and surely he’ll fit it all in somewhere.

Auerbach: Now that the power's back, shine a spotlight on Hydro Ottawa
Some important questions about Hydro Ottawa need answers now more than ever:
• Are Hydro’s disaster plans adequate?
• Are the plans and large projected expenses for long-term infrastructure improvements appropriate?
• Could the interest rate on Hydro’s debt be lowered?
• Does Hydro spend its $1.2 billion of revenue from Ottawa residents and businesses with due regard for efficiency and effectiveness?
• Could its rates be lower or be more fairly constructed?

Gormley: When both old and new democracies crumble, we all grieve
When something is mourned, grief is felt for one of two things: the loss of what was, and the loss of what might have been. The slow death of Western liberal democracy inspires both types of bereavement.
On its own, each symptom wracking the American republic is painful; together, maybe lethal. The president has reportedly committed hundreds of millions of dollars of tax fraud. He has declared bankruptcy. He has bragged about sexually assaulting women. He has been accused of sexual assault by mu -

Pearce: Ottawa businesses show it pays to take the high road
The most powerful people in the Ontario business community complain a lot about workers’ rights and would like to halt the next minimum wage hike – a fate currently planned by the province for the bump to $15 that people were counting on in 2019.
But we’re not a monolithic group. The most powerful business lobbies may have a strong influence on public policy, but they don’t speak for all of us.
Business owners are as diverse as their businesses, and we all have diffe -

On October 14, seven Ottawa-area homes are opening their doors to the public for the fourth annual Reno Tour. A fundraiser by the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Association (GOHBA) in support of Habitat for Humanity—to date the -
Capital region jobless rate drops to 4.5 per cent in September
The jobless rate for the national capital region dropped to 4.5 per cent in September, from 4.7 per cent in August, Statistics Canada reported Friday.
This marked the seventh straight month the unemployment rate was below five per cent, normally a sign of a healthy economy.
The improvement in September reflected the addition of 1,000 net new jobs while the size of the labour force, which includes all people who are seeking jobs, remained the same.
A key influence was the federal government, whic -

Stuntman Stu hangs up sweater as Sens announcer
“It was a dream come true.”
Thursday night’s Senators game was Stuntman Stu’s last as PA announcer.
The Majic 100 host, who’s battled leukemia, announced on Facebook Friday morning that he will miss the gig he’s had since 2006 but can no longer “burn the candle at both ends” after the effects of treatment and ongoing medication.
“I look forward to going to games with my kids,” Schwartz wrote. “It’ll be a new experience that -

Red Cross to begin cash support to tornado victims
The Canadian Red Cross is to begin cash support for victims of the six tornadoes that hit the national capital region on Sept. 21.
The agency said it will be providing $600 to qualified families of fewer than three people. Families of more than four people could be eligible for up to $800 in financial assistance from the Red Cross.
To be considered for financial assistance, households must be registered with the Red Cross. They must also be uninsured. So far, almost 3,000 people have registered -
Nine of the best vegetarian and health-conscious restaurants in Ottawa
Did you know that according to a recent study, 7.1 per cent of Canadians consider themselves vegetarians?
That being the case, it shouldn’t be hard to find quality restaurants serving food that herbivores can – and actually like – to eat. And yet, the struggle is real. The same goes for vegans and other special diet adherents.
To make this frustrating reality a little easier, here’s a list of nine vegetarian and health-conscious restaurants in Ottawa for your next meal ou -

Sunny, cool then risk of rainy Thanksgiving weekend
Friday starts out sunny if a bit chilly, but the rain is expected to return Saturday and the risk of showers lingers right through the long Thanksgiving weekend.
After the mercury hit 24.4 C Thursday, it plunged to just over 4 C overnight courtesy of an Arctic high-pressure system that swept the region.
Friday’s high should be 10 C under sunny skies that become mixed near noon with a UV of 4 or moderate, Environment Canada predicts. The overnight low looks like 3 C with the risk of fr -
MacDougall: Jagmeet Singh needs to thrive where Justin Trudeau has failed
With roughly a year to go before a federal election is held, Andrew MacDougall is taking a look at what each of the three major party leaders must do in the next 12 months to have a shot at becoming or remaining prime minister. Today: Jagmeet Singh.
•
Remember a year ago, when Jagmeet Singh was the fresh young face of social democratic politics in Canada? When he was the even sexier/multicultural/woke version of Justin Trudeau?
Or how about three years ago, when the prosecutorial Thomas Mul -

More on the spy who settled in Ottawa
Re: A double agent at the door, Oct. 1.
Thank you for again publishing details about Operation Keystone and Soviet-era deep cover KGB illegal Yevgeni Brik and disgraced RCMP officer, the late James Morrison. This case, six years after the defection of Soviet GRU cypher clerk, Igor Gouzenko, was considered one of the most important Canadian counter-espionage cases during the early years of the Cold War. In June 1992, I was the CSIS officer who lead the operat -
Gee: Mayor Jim Watson shouldn't block people on Twitter. Here's why
The Internet can be a brutal place for everyone with an opinion to share. It’s particularly awful if you’re a woman, but it’s bad if you’re a public figure of any sort.
But what if you’re a politician? How do you deal with trolls? What are the rules distinguishing between official accounts and personal accounts?
Mayor Jim Watson uses Twitter to communicate his day-to-day activities, post photos from events, retweet compliments, and provide official updates. Twitter, -
Adam: If you're on planning committee, don't take developers' money
It is not clear why planning committee chair Jan Harder and some of her colleagues don’t understand that taking money from developers constitutes a conflict of interest. Reports by CBC that Harder and some committee members solicited and pocketed thousands of dollars from fundraisers organized by developers have raised concerns about the integrity of the planning system. And justifiably so. Ordinary citizens already believe the system is fixed, and behaviour like this not only adds to publ -
