'Pulling out all the stops': Police say they're pouring on resources to locate missing 11-year-old
Ottawa police are “pulling out all the stops” to find Nakayla Baskin, the 11-year-old girl who disappeared without a trace early in the early morning hours of Sept. 25.
The department says it’s calling in expertise from all of its units. Many officers have also stepped forward to offer their help to locate Nakayla, said Insp. Isobel Granger of the Ottawa Police Criminal Investigations Directorate.
“I have been overwhelmed by support from the various directorates. Internal -
Months after house destroyed, Barrhaven fire victim 'just wants to go home'
From the window of her rental unit, Vicky Earl can almost see the burnt-out shell of her home. It’s a daily reminder of the frustrating effort to rebuild after a devastating fire this past summer.
The 63-year-old Barrhaven resident had to flee her townhouse in July when a neighbouring unit caught fire. She’s now renting a place about two blocks away and says while the fire was traumatic, the months-long uncertainty about when she can rebuild is arguably worse.

Recognize these? Napanee OPP seeks owner of stolen items
Police are trying to track down the owner of collector spoons, jewelry and watches seized in a recent Napanee-area stolen goods investigation.

'Not an inspiring day for heritage in Ottawa' as Magee House demolition approved
Hintonburg’s half-collapsed Magee House has to be torn down, the city’s committee on heritage buildings agreed Thursday.
The same meeting included a vote on what to do about a project in New Edinburgh where a builder was supposed to preserve some of an old house within a larger replacement, and a report on Somerset House, the derelict old building at Somerset and Bank streets in Centretown.
“This is not an inspiring day for heritage in Ottawa,” said Barry Padolsky, an arc -

'How are we going to manage?' Queensway Carleton worries about ability to cope this winter
It has been a long, crowded summer at Queensway Carleton Hospital and it seems unlikely this week’s provincial announcement of money to “end hallway health care” is going to offer much relief.
Unlike most years, patient volume never went down at Queensway Carleton over the summer. As a result, day surgeries had to be cancelled several times, which is rare in the summer, and the hospital saw its highest ever volume of ALC patients — filling 57 of 103 beds. (ALC or alternat -

Reevely: Ottawa getting a tiny fraction of new nursing-homes beds in Tories' latest announcement
Only 212 of the new nursing-home beds the provincial government promised to pay for this week will be in Ottawa, a spokeswoman for Health Minister Christine Elliott says, a tiny fraction of what this part of Ontario needs.
Adding nursing-home spaces is a key element in the Progressive Conservatives’ plan to get rid of “hallway health care,” where patients in hospital are kept on stretchers in hallways because there’s just nowhere else to treat them.

Pellerin: Separatism dead? Quebec's vote was still all about identity
As someone still sporting deep ego bruises for having declared Quebec separatism dead a few times too many, I humbly offer a word of caution about Monday’s election. Don’t.
Yes, the separatist parties tanked. But here’s the thing: Separatism was never about separation. It was always about identity. And that issue never dies.
The first wave of separatism was in good part a reaction to the myth of English-speaking bosses controlling poor francophones and not letting them get ahea -

Bradley and Dobson: Natural disasters can be mental health crises, too
The Ottawa region was put to the test on Sept. 21. While a fortunate few remained unaffected, much of the city was plunged into darkness following tornados that took out major power infrastructure. If ever there is a situation when the mental health and wellness of a city’s population is stretched to the limit, it’s following a natural disaster.
With events like these, stress happens on a sliding scale. Thankfully, physical injuries were limited. But there are people whose homes were -

Hands off that cute fuzzy caterpillar
Hickory tussock moth caterpillars are on the move, looking for a winter home. They are fuzzy, bright and cute. Don’t pet them.
Also, don’t lick them.
Eastern Ontario is home to this bug, and it’s sort of toxic, or at least irritating if you handle it. Doctors aren’t sure exactly how it causes the reaction, but insect scientist Amanda Roe says its cute hairs that look like fur are in fact barbed, a little like porcupine quills.

Tight rental market a catalyst for higher house prices across Ottawa
If last month’s tornadoes affected the business of buying and selling homes in Ottawa it was not immediately evident in the data published this week by the Ottawa Real Estate Board.
The number of homes and condominiums sold across the city approached 1,400 in September, according to the board, which represents about 3,000 realtors. That was virtually identical to the number sold during the same month a year earlier.
The only change, and it was a slight one, involved the mix of properties. -

'Operation Impact' aims to reduce holiday traffic mishaps
Ottawa area police forces are joining their national colleagues in a Thanksgiving weekend operation aimed at the “Big 4” causes of fatal automobile collisions.
The four-day safety project, dubbed “Operation Impact,” involves patrols focused on preventing distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving and lack of occupant restraint.
“Motorists are advised to cut the distractions, buckle up, obey the posted speed limits and arrive alive,” the OPP advises in a ne -
Today in the Petfinder: Raccoon rescue redux
When a Constance Bay raccoon got caught in the cookie jar – a no-doubt delightfully stinky garbage can – Ottawa bylaw officers once again came to the rescue.
Once freed after hours in the trash, the furry forager fled.
“When he got out he was so excited he forgot to thank our officer as he ran away,” the department tweeted along with a reminder to report injured or sick small wild animals via 311.
It was a second reported raccoon rescue by bylaw officers this week.

Egan: Infill or outcast? When old neighbourhoods grow newer, boxier via demolition
Of all the issues not getting much traction in the municipal election — and it was a lifeless affair even before multiple tornadoes literally sucked the air out of the city — there is an explosive sleeper: infill and intensification.
In any mature neighbourhood in Ottawa, older houses are being torn down and replaced by boxier replacements that are bigger, tend to have a hard-edged “massive” profile, eat away at green space, remove large trees, put cars right by the sidew -
Cobb: Infill builders are cutting up our roads and we're paying for it
Infill development, a significant contributor to the city’s property tax coffers, is a booming business. Properly done, it can enhance an aging street and blend respectfully with the existing character of an established neighbourhood. Properly done, infill is constructed by developers who respect and communicate with neighbours and who do their best to minimize disruption and destruction.
While some developers and their sub-contractors do quality work in just such a respectful manner, infi -
Bradley: Natural disasters can be mental health crises, too
The Ottawa region was put to the test on Sept.

Canadian supply ship in the Pacific but not being used in tsunami relief efforts
The Royal Canadian Navy’s new supply ship Asterix is operating in the Pacific but it won’t at this point be lending a helping hand to those in need after last week’s earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia.
Indonesian authorities have been struggling to get relief to survivors who have been left without food, water, fuel and medicine after Friday’s magnitude 7.5 quake and tsunami that smashed homes and businesses, downed communications and made roads impassable on Sulawesi. T -
