More than a week after Nakayla Baskin vanished from her Carlington-area home, fear for the youngster rises with each passing hour.
Missing person investigators were chasing a “handful” of tips Wednesday as her devastated family awaited any sign.
“She’s very, very young and we’re very concerned,” said Christy Dzikowicz the Canadian Centre for Child Protection and missingkids.ca.

Ottawa Votes: What you need to know about the candidates in River ward
In the lead-up to Ottawa’s municipal election, this newspaper surveyed every candidate, providing them with a list of questions. It’s an exercise that’s meant to help residents get to know the candidates better and to get a firm sense of where they stand on important issues facing our city.
Our survey was broken into three parts: City issues, ward-specific questions, and an ‘about you’ section. Candidates appear in alphabetical order and surveys were completed and r -

'The zebra was in heaven': How an invasive species took over the Rideau River
They came. They didn’t see much — mussels have no eyes. But they sure conquered.
Zebra mussels overran the Rideau River during the past three decades, and now a study from the Canadian Museum of Nature says they lucked into a place with a full buffet, perfect water and no enemies.
Then they reproduced like mad: la revanche du berceau all over again.
André Martel saw the first arrivals in our region in the fall of 1990. He had been a PhD student when the mussels invaded Lake Er -
Reevely: Clive Doucet's campaign of ideas would be so much stronger if it came with a plan
If he were mayor, Clive Doucet says he’d get the new Civic hospital campus moved to Tunney’s Pasture with a call to federal minister Catherine McKenna.
“Catherine and I get along really well. We’ll just have a little chat and it’ll all be resolved,” Doucet said, meeting with this newspaper’s editorial board Wednesday morning to talk about his campaign for mayor.
Mayors have influence far beyond their powers on paper, Doucet said, and if he should defeat -

Menard: Here's why I'm supporting fare-free public transit
What if no one had to pay for public transit?
Ottawa’s public transit system certainly has its share of shortcomings. But the biggest problem preventing an efficient transit system is that we have never thought of our public transit as a truly essential public service.
We don’t need to dig though our pockets to find change before we can enter a library and we certainly are never expected to find exact change before we drive on Ottawa’s ever-expanding public road system. Just li -

Ottawa's lost meteorite: 1910 searchers never did discover 'message from the sky'
A woman in Gatineau said she saw it, as she looked south across the Ottawa River from her home on Aylmer Road. At first, she said, it appeared as a bright light in the sky but, after it broke in two, she watched one piece as it travelled west, “throwing off tongues of fire as it went.”
Few people reported seeing the supposed meteorite that was said to have crashed into an Ottawa Carbide Co. coal shed on Victoria Island on April 24, 1910.
The object itself was never recovered, so the -

Until very recently, my assumption that oatmeal is just for breakfast was pretty deeply ingrained.
But in the past two weeks, I’ve had my outlook on porridge rocked by the oddly savoury yet satisfying bowls at Oat Couture Oatmeal Cafe, which opened in the spring in Old Ottawa South.

Antiques: Rare 1830s cider mug has a handle on humour
Q: I inherited this mug and would love to know a bit more about it. I’m intrigued by the handle, which seems to show some sort of strange snake goblin that doesn’t seem to go at all with the floral design on the piece. It has a marking on the bottom showing part of a crown and the words “Patent Ironstone China” and stands 10 cm high and 14 cm across (4 x 5.5 inches). Why the strange handle? Anything you can tell me about it would be much appreciated.

'Pieces of stuff that are at least as old as the sun': Fun with meteorites
Tens of thousands of confirmed meteorites, and far more unconfirmed ones, have fallen to earth. Over time, humans have held these events in varying degrees of religious awe, hostile suspicion, superstitious fervor and scientific curiosity.
Regarding the latter, meteorites are important to scientists because they are a rare source of extremely old material.
“The comets are composed of material that comes from the beginning of our solar system,” says Richard Herd, former curator of the -
Ottawa's lost meteorite, as searchers fail to discover 'message from the sky'
A woman in Gatineau said she saw it, as she looked south across the Ottawa River from her home on Aylmer Road. At first, she said, it appeared as a bright light in the sky but, after it broke in two, she watched one piece as it travelled west, “throwing off tongues of fire as it went.”
Few people reported seeing the supposed meteorite that was said to have crashed into an Ottawa Carbide Co. coal shed on Victoria Island on April 24, 1910.
The object itself was never recovered, so the -

Our survey was broken into three parts: City issues, ward-specific questions, and an ‘about you’ section. Candidates appear in alphabetical order and surveys were completed and r -

Meehan: Fix Ottawa's traffic crisis – or stop residential development
Our roads are at capacity. We can’t put another vehicle on north-south routes that have not been upgraded or widened in decades. The rush hour in Ottawa is at a crisis point, and must be addressed now, not in 2032. We can’t get up any earlier in the day to beat the traffic.
Despite the agonizing congestion, it’s still faster for many to hop in their car. We have bike routes, but not enough, and biking is not a solution for everyone, especially in our long, cold winters.
