The city’s bylaw department rescued a raccoon who got a paw stuck to a dumpster over the weekend while trying to enjoy a little garbage delight.
The critter was foraging in Kanata when it ran into trouble.
“Our officers were able to bend the metal to free it,” the city’s bylaw department reported Tuesday. “Luckily the raccoon was not injured and did not require transport to a vet.”

Canada faces severe shortage of pilots and aircraft workers
Canada faces a shortage of 3,000 pilots and 55,000 workers overall in the aviation industry by 2025 — caused by retirements, industry growth and barriers to recruiting new workers.
The labour shortage is so severe that a national strategy is in the works to address it.
But there are many problems, industry and Transport Canada officials heard at a forum Tuesday in Ottawa. Flight school costs at least $75,000 to reach an employable level. These schools may require students to live long dist -
'It's not a puddle': Labour council releases photo of water leaked into LRT tunnel
The Ottawa and District Labour Council has released a photo of water that had leaked in the the LRT tunnel.
The photo, taken more than a month ago according to the labour council, raises questions about the safety of workers on the project, said labour council president Sean McKenny. But it’s also not the worst photo McKenny has seen of working conditions underground. Others have not been made public.
“There are a number of photos that we have that are worse. But this is the one that -
New Food Guide could spell end of chocolate milk wars
Canada’s chocolate milk wars could soon be over.
Chocolate milk, along with fruit juice, is expected to get a thumbs down as healthy foods in the new Canadian Food Guide set to be released beginning this fall. That could eventually end debates about whether chocolate milk should be routinely offered to schoolchildren.
Canada’s previous Food Guide, issued in 2007, termed chocolate milk a suitable alternative for dairy and juice a suitable alternative to whole fruit, both of which were -

Some Ontario labour reforms on the block, Ford says
The Ontario Progressive Conservatives will “get rid of” a big package of labour reforms the Liberals passed less than a year ago that were meant to smooth the rougher edges of the gig economy, Premier Doug Ford announced in the legislature Tuesday morning.
He said it in passing, answering a question from Liberal MPP Michael Coteau that asked him to commit to the three hours of pay the Liberals’ Bill 148 requires employers to give their workers when their shifts are cancell -

'Put Jim Watson down!' fan warned at Panda Game
Mayor Jim Watson might have an admitted soft spot for the Carleton Ravens, but he at least came home from Saturday’s Panda Game with a story to tell.
When the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees bested the birds at the Panda Game Saturday, one fan who’d been in his cups gave Watson an impromptu squeeze.
“He drunkenly picked up who he thought to be a random man off his feet and hugged him until we all yelled at him to put Jim Watson down,” the man’s girlfriend tweeted, tag -

NCC to gradually close Victoria Island for soil remediation project

The agency said in a release Tuesday that it plans to close the island in chunks beginning this month, with intentions to close it completely by Dec. 31.
Victoria Island is next to Chaudière Island, between Ontario and Quebec, and is described by the NCC as “a place of special significance to the Indigenous peoples in Canada’s Capital area.”

In the lead-up to Ottawa’s municipal election, this newspaper surveyed every candidate, providing them with a list of questions. It’s an exercise that’s meant to help residents get to know the candidates better and to get a firm sense of where they stand on important issues facing our city.
Our survey was broken into three parts: City issues, ward-specific questions, and an ‘about you’ section. Candidates appear in alphabetical order and surveys were completed and r -

House Works: Your questions on multitools, painting posts, rusting nails
Choosing a multitool
Q: What kind of oscillating saw should I buy? I’m rebuilding the window frames on my old wooden house. What brand and model of saw will work best for cutting off old trim and window parts in close quarters?
A: An oscillating tool is more commonly referred to as a multitool and you’ll find it very helpful for the job you’ve got planned. This category of tool is a relatively recent thing, coming into prominence over the last 20 years.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada is banding together with several other unions in a campaign to oppose the contracting out of five heating and cooling plant operations in the National Capital Region, which provide service to about 100 buildings, including the Parliamentary Precinct, through about 14 kilometres of underground tunnels.

Denley: Strong female contenders could save this municipal election
One of the encouraging subplots in our mostly-lifeless municipal election is the possible emergence of a strong new group of women on city council. Overall, fewer than 20 per cent of candidates are women, but some of those who are running are potential major contributors.
One need not be a gender equity enthusiast to understand that a city council with just four of 24 seats occupied by women is a council that is not taking advantage of the skills and experience of women, and it could get worse. -

Cohen: Renegotiating NAFTA was less about winning than not losing
On the morning after, the president of the United States and the prime minister of Canada emerged to ruminate on their big deal. One was boastful and triumphant, the other subdued and relieved.
Donald Trump called it important and fair to all parties, which, to him, NAFTA was not. This new deal, he modestly suggested, is something only he could have done.
Justin Trudeau talked about the value of compromise, this country’s mantra, and declared “a good day for Canada.” Good or ba -

Trade deal has certainly plagued us
Re: They’ve got a deal, Oct. 1.

The patient was well medicated and frozen, but awake, as Ottawa neurosurgeon Dr. John Sinclair drilled carefully into his skull. When the drilling was done, a five by five centimetre piece of bone was removed revealing a brain tumour that glowed fluorescent orange and pink.
The surgery, performed last month at The Ottawa Hospital, was the first of its kind in Canada aside from clinical trials. A few hours before surgery, the patient had consumed a drink containing the drug 5-ALA (aminolevulinic -
