Dunn's Famous Delicatessen on Elgin Street closes after 20 years
Dunn’s Famous Delicatessen, which opened 20 years ago on Elgin Street and has served smoked meat to countless weekend night owls over the years, has closed.
“I’ve lost my restaurant. … It just hurts is all it does,” said Stanley Devine, who owns the business with his wife, Ina Dunn Devine, the daughter of the Montrealer who opened the original Dunn‘s Delicatessen on Montreal’s Ste. Catherine Street in 1927.
Devine, 83, said business had dropped by -
Reevely: Watson's traffic-safety plan ignores the real problem — generations of bad street design
Jim Watson’s pledges to improve traffic safety are just promises to keep doing the things Ottawa has always done: build dangerous streets and hope that enforcement blitzes will make up for the mayor and city council’s lack of nerve.
“Although we’ve made progress, we have to take an even more aggressive approach to make community safety a daily priority for each and every resident of Ottawa,” Watson said Sunday, dropping his latest set of campaign promises as he runs -

'We need you to come home:' Police release family's plea to locate missing 11-year-old girl
The family of an 11-year-old girl who has been missing for almost a week has released a video pleading for her to come home — and for the public to come forward with any information about her disappearance.
Nakayla Baskin was last seen by her family on Sept. 24. Ottawa police believe she left her home in the Carlington area about half an hour after midnight. Although police released a bulletin on Sept. 25 asking for anyone with information to come forward, there have only been two tips so -
Ottawa cops to be allowed to use pot off duty
Off-duty Ottawa police officers will be permitted to use cannabis once it’s legal in Canada later this month, Chief Charles Bordeleau said Monday, as long as they’re “fit for duty” when they report for work.
The policy is similar to the one for drinking alcohol or even using prescription drugs, he said.
“An individual, an officer, needs to be fit for duty when showing up for work. We have different assessment methods to be able to determine whether that person is fi -

Car thieves stole as many as 50 cars from Ottawa homes between May and September
The Ottawa Police Service believes it has helped to break up a criminal ring of car thieves that was responsible for as many as 50 automobile thefts in the nation’s capital between May and September.
While the number of vehicles stolen from Ottawa homes seems shocking, it pales in comparison to the number of luxury vehicles that were stolen from homes in Toronto and Greater Toronto Area during the same time period. According to police at the York Regional Police Force’s auto cargo th -
Tornadoes might have kicked up asbestos risk
The tornado has lifted the lid off an old hazard that usually sits quietly in older buildings without bothering anyone: asbestos.
The fibrous mineral was once a common ingredient in building materials, used for heat resistance, for strength and as insulation.
The use of asbestos in building materials fell off quickly in the late 1900s as hazards became known. Tiny asbestos fibres can embed themselves in the lungs and cause a form of cancer called mesothelioma.
Now, with walls and ceilings torn a -

Doucet wants new approaches to housing, food and long-term care
Ottawa’s approach to affordable housing and homelessness has been a public policy failure, the city’s former manager of people services told a press conference organized by mayoral candidate Clive Doucet Monday.
Dick Stewart, who retired in 2002, said homelessness has grown in recent years and the city has never achieved its own affordable housing objectives.
Between 2014 and 2017, Stewart said, homelessness grew by 16 per cent in Ottawa overall, and by 32 per cent for families. -

Family issues new plea to find missing girl, 11
The family of a missing girl made an appeal for her safe return Monday afternoon, almost a week after police first turned to the public for help finding the 11-year-old.

Editorial: Free trade deal gets some key points right
Trade agreements between nations – even nations run by thoughtful, experienced leaders – are inevitably born of compromises between competing political agendas. Just ask the Mulroney-era team that negotiated NAFTA with the Americans and Mexicans in 1992.
Now imagine how much more difficult it is to cut a deal when one of the national leaders involved is unpredictable, temperamental and often uninformed. Seen in that light, the trade pact Canada has reached with the United States (and -

Police officers with the Sûreté du Québec were kept busy over the weekend dealing with speeders and drivers suspected of operating a motor vehicle while inebriated.

Kabilan: After the tornadoes, let’s avoid the ‘lessons learned’ trap
As Ottawa-Gatineau shifts from response to recovery after six tornadoes ripped through the region, there will likely be a review of how authorities responded to this event. The aim of such exercises is to identify the “lessons learned” from the incident in order to improve response and resilience in the future.
Improving Canada’s response to events like this, which resulted in severe damage in several areas and knocked out the electricity supply for more than 300,000 customers, -

Exit interview: Marianne Wilkinson, the 'Mother of Kanata,' bows out of municipal politics
When Marianne Wilkinson was the first woman to be elected to March township council in 1969, she had three children under the age of six.
Now, almost half a century later, Wilkinson is retiring — from politics at least — at the age of 80.
She says she remembers the first time she saw developer Bill Teron’s planned community in 1968, when she and her husband, Bob, were looking for a home for their young family.
“We drove out here to the middle of nowhere,” she recall -
October debuts with more cool, wet weather
After a decidedly-autumnal last day of September, October arrives with a string of wet, cool days before we’re briefly back in the 20s.
Sunday’s high was just 11 C and Monday is 14 C under mainly cloudy skies with a 60 per cent chance of rain or drizzle.
More wet stuff is in the forecast overnight with a low of 7 C.

Wednesday is warmer with a high of 18 C, low of 12 C and forecast dry skies.

Lindsay Sherk’s cellphone pans over the Route 91 Harvest music festival as 22,000 fans sing along with country music star Jason Aldean’s Any Ol’ Barstool.

As the video pulls back from the stage, there’s a distinct metallic “click,” followed almost immediately by an only slightly duller impact sound.
