A Republic Airlines passenger jet raised a stink at the Ottawa International Airport when it struck and killed a skunk upon landing.

City pledges aid to tornado victims anxious to repair homes before winter
The City of Ottawa has promised to expedite building permits for homeowners who have suffered tornado damage as they scramble to repair roofs, windows and walls before winter arrives.
Mayor Jim Watson told a Saturday morning information session at Woodvale Pentacostal Church on Greenbank Road that the city has made disaster recovery its first order of business. All fees for city demolition and building permits to rebuild homes will be waived, he said, and the city may reduce or refund prope -

In his new cookbook, Ottawa star chef Marc Lepine reveals Atelier restaurant's story and secrets
Ottawa chef Marc Lepine used to be an avid cookbook reader.
“The last four or five I bought, I’ve been too busy — I haven’t had time to get into them. I’ve stopped buying them,” says the chef-owner of the award-winning restaurant Atelier on Rochester Street.
It’s hard to dispute Lepine’s priorities given that in 2012 and 2016 he was named the Canadian Culinary Champion on the strength of breathtaking dishes that, in each case months earlier, had wo -
Wilson: Living by candlelight – what the tornado teaches us
I spent a number of years of my adult life living in the Dominican Republic, at one point very much barefoot and pregnant. The halcyon picture we carry of the tropical life is so distant from what much of day-to-day is truly like, and a major part of that was our limited – or in some cases, non-existent – access to fresh water, electricity or the ever-so-elusive hot shower.
We Canadians often see the world through rose-coloured glasses, spending thousands of dollars on all-inclusive -
Today's letters: Governor General's a tricky job
You needn’t be a rocket scientist to be the Governor General
Re: Failure to launch, Sept. 22.
Being Governor General is one of the most difficult jobs in the country, because it’s not necessarily a task for a highly educated achiever who wants to change the system. It’s a job for a traditional, duty-bound, diplomatic person.
It’s also endless travelling, tiresome hand-shaking, constant handing out of awards and medals, numerous public functions, and an understanding that -
Sherazi: Remember 'diversity' isn't just about race, gender and age
Much has been made of the fact that we have some diverse candidates in the municipal elections. Four candidates, for example, hope to open the door to greater representation at city hall by becoming the capital’s first black city councillors. And in a recent opinion column in the Citizen, Amira Elghawaby suggested more be done to attract diverse groups.
While it is heartening to see discussions about diversity, it strikes me that the discussion is often narrowed to race, sexual orient -
Editorial: Lessons from the tornadoes
The tornadoes eight days ago blew away a lot of assumptions. For instance, the assumption that we are insulated from large-scale disasters. Between the 1994 Aylmer tornado, the 1998 ice storm, the 2017 floods and the Sept. 21 twisters, we have learned that we are not.
Another assumption was demolished too, however: that we live in an age of social isolation in which we lack empathy for others. Numerous acts of heroism, compassion and generosity this past week reminded us that disasters can also -

Tornado aftermath: Sixty buildings seriously damaged in Gatineau, some will be demolished
Sixty buildings, mainly in Hull’s Mont-Bleu neighbourhood, were seriously damaged in the tornado that ripped through Gatineau last Friday.
Two of the most badly damaged buildings have already been demolished. The City of Gatineau says it has received six applications to demolish buildings, a process it is speeding up to help with recovery from the storm, which also damaged buildings in Aylmer and other parts of Gatineau.
Gatineau was one of the hardest-hit areas in the storm that unleashed -

Ottawa councillors alarmed cities won't control location of marijuana stores
Several Ottawa city councillors say they are dismayed to learn that municipalities will have little power to control where marijuana shops are located.

Fleury has spoken out against the “marijuana alley” of illegal dispensaries along Montreal Road. The same thing could happen when legal shops arrive because the province will place no limits on the number -

Tornado aftermath: Ottawa's battered trees will live on, expert says
Ottawa’s urban forests took a beating last week, especially the majestic white pines of Arlington Woods, but an expert on preserving old trees says it doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the trees or the cherished forest.
“If a tree is alive and has well-established roots, there’s a good chance it will survive,” said Philip van Wassenaer, an arborist with Urban Forest Innovations Inc. and one of the authors of Ottawa’s 20-year management plan for its urban for
