Mohammad Ali Hassan told his driver he was “going to collect a debt,” a jury heard, when he met Michael LeBlanc outside a Donald Street convenience store on the night he was killed.
Anthony Larmond testified Wednesday that Hassan would pay him to act as his driver, and he dropped Hassan off that night at a pay phone outside the Quickie store where he met with LeBlanc.
Hassan, the 19-year-old known by the street name “Flex,” was stabbed 23 times in Overbrook’s Lawson

Police hunt suspect in bank holdup south of Ottawa
Area schools were put on “hold and secure” status Wednesday in Elgin, Ont., as the small town about 120 kilometres south of Ottawa was the scene of a bank holdup.
Provincial police were called to the Bank of Montreal branch on Main Street at about 1:30 p.m.
The call brought members of a number of squads, including K-9 units and emergency response team officers.
As a precaution, the area schools initiated hold-and-secure procedures. That has been lifted.

Reevely: Employers to pay less for workers' comp in Ontario, Tories announce, but won't quite admit why
Ontario employers will pay a lot less for injured workers’ compensation starting next year, provincial Labour Minister Laurie Scott announced Wednesday, now that the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board has enough money stashed to pay the claims it expects to get.
This is good news six years in the making. Scott happily accepted a present left for her by the Liberals, the worst government in the history of governing.
“(Employers) can now use these savings to invest into the -
Egan: How to help tornado victims with cash, food, furniture and willing hands
Help is pouring in for the victims of last week’s tornadoes.
While the Ottawa Senators have yet to win a pre-season game, their foundation is piling up amazing numbers off the ice. An initial target of $25,000 for the victims of last week’s tornadoes was doubled to $50,000, then again to $100,000 in funds to be matched from the public.
Team troubles aside, there is evidently plenty of goodwill in Sens Nation. The GoFundMe campaign on Wednesday afternoon had hit $110,643 in four days, -
How your house can resist tornadoes the Three Little Pigs way
Engineers at Western University who practise blowing the roof off a house say there are simple, cheap and effective ways to keep a house intact in high winds.
The biggest goal is to keep the roof from flying away, said Gregory Kopp, a wind engineering expert and acting dean of engineering at Western.
He works with the Insurance Research Lab for Better Homes, better known as the Three Little Pigs house: A lab where they huff and they puff and they design a house to survive.

Perth, Smiths Falls real estate broker charged with fraud
A 57-year-old Smiths Falls real estate broker is facing charges after a two-month fraud probe, Lanark OPP said Wednesday.
The investigation by uniformed officers and detectives from the crime unit began with a walk-in complaint at the Perth detachment June 8.
Mark Lee of Smiths Falls is charged with one count of fraud over $5,000, two counts of using a forged document and one count of personation with intent to gain an advantage.
Lee told the Kingston Whig-Standard he will plead not guilty to th -
Tornado aftermath: Demolition toll rises, kids caught with stolen TV in Gatineau
The demolition toll continues to rise from Friday’s massive tornado storm.
At Ottawa City Hall, Mayor Jim Watson told council the latest assessments indicate 30 homes will have to be demolished in hard-hit Dunrobin, while 55 are still deemed unsafe in areas of Nepean/Ottawa South.
About 100 familes are without homes, the mayor said.
The mayor described the “heartbreaking devastation,” but expressed relief there were no fatalities.

More than a game: Ravens honour memory of former Gee-Gee Loïc Kayembe on Panda trophy
Loïc Kayembe never grasped Pedro the Panda as a member of the winning team, but he’ll forever be part of Panda Game history.
The Ottawa Gee-Gees defensive lineman who died six days before last year’s contest has been honoured in the traditional champions’ engraving on the trophy by the Carleton Ravens team that did win.
“#49 More Than A Game” appears on the statuesque panda’s chest, atop a list featuring one slogan per year since the concurrent reviv -

Paving way for cannabis-based drinks, Canopy Growth shareholders approve massive $5B deal with Constellation Brands
No one doubted this deal would be approved. Canopy Growth, the Smiths Falls marijuana products company, confirmed Wednesday that shareholders representing more than 95 per cent of the company’s shares have approved a deal that will see Constellation Brands invest $5 billion.
“This sounds like a big number,” Canopy Growth CEO Bruce Linton told shareholders, “but we already know how to spend it and are figuring out priorities.”

Four people were arrested and charged.

Tornado aftermath: Council waives building fees as city manager calls for heightened effort helping storm-affected residents
The City of Ottawa’s top bureaucrat said municipal bosses “are not taking our foot off the gas” in the tornado and storm recovery, which entered its fifth day on Wednesday.
Steve Kanellakos said the reality of what happened is starting to hit residents who have lost their homes and those who are trying to rebuild. This moment is the hardest part, he said.

Tornado aftermath: Huge donation of pet food headed to hard-hit areas
It wasn’t as dramatic as transport planes dumping supplies by parachute, but the effect was the same for the region’s cats and dogs.
Ottawa Humane Society volunteers were on the roads Wednesday delivering an emergency supply of pet food, two huge transport pallets worth to feed pets in families in regions most affected by Friday’s tornadoes.
The food, donated by Hill’s Pet Nutrition Canada, was en route to the Dunrobin Veterinary Clinic, the March Road Veterinar -
Today's letters: Power outage? Think solar
A better way to face power outages
Many people who suffered during the recent power outages may be considering the purchase of a generator. For about $800, it produces enough electricity to keep the fridge, freezer, lights and furnace-fan working, with some to spare for heating up meals and coffee. But it uses so much gasoline that it cannot compete with Hydro Ottawa’s price of electricity after the power is restored. We end up with an $800 machine doing nothing except waiting for the next -
Glavin: At the UN, Trudeau stands tall for style over substance
It would appear, if we rely on the Canadian Press news agency, the Financial Post, the Ottawa Citizen, the St. Catherine’s Standard, CTV News and so on, that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spent a great deal of his time at the United Nations in New York this week resuming, or mounting, or restarting, or waging something called a “charm offensive.”
It would also appear, from the admittedly imprecise and potentially misleading results of a Google news search, that it is quite comm -

Kopytko: A day without power, but at least we had cabbage
“No power, no problem; at least we have cabbage!”
Timing is everything. My elderly Aunt Irene, hailing from Alonsa, Man., arrived for a visit last Thursday, and we lost power on Friday afternoon. Irene had left her farm to visit Ottawa, her first trip “out east,” and she was a bit nervous as she had only been on a plane twice before.
However, there was a 40th wedding anniversary to attend and she would spend a few days. Plus, two of her sisters offered to accompany -
