The City of Ottawa is warning residents with tornado damage to check with their insurance companies first before hiring companies to do recovery work.
“There have been reports of recovery companies misrepresenting themselves,” the city said in a tweet on Tuesday.
“Speak with your insurance company about authorized work and be vigilant of these potential scams.”
Here’s our complete tornado coverage.

Environment Canada has revised its summary of Friday’s vicious weather to identify a total of six tornadoes that tore across parts of Ottawa, Gatineau and west Quebec.
Besides the three tornadoes now confirmed to have struck the Ontario side of the Ottawa River, starting in the Calabogie-White Lake area, with a second event tearing through Dunrobin and crossing into Gatineau and a third ripping a path across Nepean, satellite images have revealed three additional tornadoes in Quebec, Envir -

Police were called to the interchange on Aug. 12 at about 10 p.m. The man was taken to -
Tornado aftermath: Hundreds volunteer to help rebuild Dunrobin
Even as hundreds of skilled tradespeople and others descended on Dunrobin this week to volunteer their time and expertise to help mend the damage caused by last Friday’s tornadoes, organizers are cautioning that it could take months before things return to normal.
“This is a long-term job,” said the Dunrobin Community Association’s Greg Patacairk, who is the volunteer coordinator for the massive cleanup and rebuilding efforts. “We’re here for the long-haul bef -

Tornado aftermath: How to find help if you need it
The city’s medical officer of health is encouraging people to seek help if they’re struggling under the invisible impact of the disaster that toppled trees and levelled homes last Friday.
“It’s important to highlight that this is an extremely stressful event and it’s going to continue to be stressful and so people may start having signs that they need more support to cope,” said Dr. Vera Etches, pointing to a string of resources that are available in the -

Reevely: 'Line by line audit' shows Liberals spent most on, er, health care and education
Reining in the Ontario government’s budget will mean spending less on the services people use most, the Progressive Conservatives’ “line by line audit” of provincial operations says, and this can best be achieved by running the government better.
So that’s settled.
Treasury Board President Peter Bethlenfalvy hired Ernst & Young to produce the study of 15 years of government spending over about four weeks in August. Its conclusions were always going to be superfi -

uOttawa to terminate agreement with student federation
The University of Ottawa has given notice of the termination of its agreement recognizing the embattled Student Federation of the University of Ottawa as the only representatives of nearly 31,000 undergraduates and says it will encourage students to organize a new student government.

'All I did was take the reservation': Steakhouse owner dumbfounded by Cloutier fundraiser backlash
Sam Saikali says he didn’t know who Jean Cloutier was when some businessmen booked a lunch reservation last week at Saikali’s Elgin Street restaurant.
Next thing he knew, some people were suggesting a boycott of Al’s Steakhouse because of a fundraiser for the Alta Vista councillor incumbent.
“I said, ‘Excuse me, I had nothing to do with it. All I did was take a reservation for 12 people and that was it,'” Saikali said.

Wesley Clover Parks as a major outdoor concert venue? Planning committee gives OK
Big concerts at Wesley Clover Parks should be allowed, the planning committee unanimously decided Tuesday, even though two community associations criticized the proposal for disrupting the greenbelt.
Wesley Clover Parks operates on land owned by the National Capital Commission on Corkstown Road. To hold concert events, Wesley Clover needs city council to change the land-use rules for the greenbelt property.
The city wants to limit the use of a concert theatre to 5,000 participants, but only unti -
Calls for cash to buy teddies for kids a scam: OPP
Thanks to generous sponsors, it’s absolutely true that OPP officers give out black-and-white teddy bears to comfort kids facing traumatic situations like a car crash.
But police are not calling citizens asking for donations to the program, the OPP warned the week after residents covered by several detachments including Upper Ottawa Valley OPP have reported the calls.
“While many OPP officers are involved in worthy charities on their personal time, the OPP is advising the public -

Eastern Ontario man killed by fallen tree
KINGSTON — A GoFundMe campaign has been set up for the family of Darren “Smitty” Smith, a married father of two who died after being struck by a large maple tree during a fierce windstorm outside his home in Elgin on Friday.
The page originally had a goal of $20,000 to support Smith’s family, but after the number had been surpassed by noon on Monday, a new goal was set at $50,000.
As of 3 p.m. on Monday, the fund sat at $22,600.

Cohen: Being Governor General may be too confining for Julie Payette
For months, Julie Payette has been the talk of Ottawa. Her travails were discussed, sotto voce, among public servants and engaged observers long before they emerged recently in the Globe and Mail, followed, more thoroughly, in the National Post.
The news: The Governor General of Canada is struggling in the job, dislikes its demands and duties, and wants to leave. The Globe did not say explicitly that she wants to resign and the Post only implied that it might happen, 10 paragraphs into a fine pi -

Gee: A Women's Bureau could offer protection after natural disasters
While tornadoes may not become an everyday occurrence, the costs of natural disasters across Canada have risen, with 2016 being the most costly year on record at $4.9 billion. These rising costs are due to not only the increased frequency of disasters, but also their increased severity, both of which are consequences of climate change. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by natural disasters – even in so-called developed countries such as Canada.
This vulnerability occurs for s -
Denley: In the city of Ottawa, uninspired leadership holds us back
Ottawa’s effective response to Friday’s tornadoes was a timely reminder that we have the capacity to be a can-do city. Political leaders, first responders, power workers and citizen volunteers worked quickly and efficiently to combat the effects of the natural disaster. With a goal and a plan, we can accomplish something big, and we can do it in days.
It’s a startling contrast with Ottawa’s municipal election, which is limping along with little in the way of either goals -
Used German drones not for us, says Canadian Forces as negotiations with Canada set to start
The Canadian military isn’t involved in the proposed purchase of a used drone from Germany, sources say.
A federal government department, however, such as Transport Canada, could be the intended new buyer, sources added Tuesday. The aircraft could be used for testing.
The Associated Press reported that Germany is looking to sell a secondhand surveillance drone that has cost the country more than $823 million to Canada — without many core components it needs to fly.

In the days to come, the shock of what’s been lost will in many cases be replaced by frustration at how long it takes to put things back to normal, at least as far as physical things are co -
