Before Randy Fitzpatrick was able to re-open Petit Bill’s Bistro on Wellington Street West for dinner Monday, the restaurateur had to count his losses.
Like hundreds of restaurants in Ottawa, from fine-dining destinations to souvlaki joints and not just along Wellington Street but also in Barrhaven, Kanata, Centrepointe, Hintonburg, Chinatown, Little Italy, New Edinburgh and beyond, Fitzpatrick’s business was without power after Friday’s tornado and storm ravaged the city&rsquo

A new building project in Yellowknife will see the construction of a 7,600-m2 building for some of the technical services elements of the Joint Task Force North Area Support Unit, and the 1st Canadian Rangers Patrol Group Headquarters. “The technical services are for supply and materiel management, vehicle maintenance, transport, and traffic (which is mostly responsible for the movement of materiel),” D -
Why a basement is the safest place to be during a tornado, explained
At the moment you realize a tornado is at your door, you may have time to get to the basement — your best option — or, barring that, a small closet or room, but that’s about it. Your roof may be gone in seconds, and if that happens, the rest of your house is likely to quickly follow.
WHAT DID THE DUNROBIN TORNADO LOOK LIKE?

Tornado aftermath: Design of electric LRT system ensures passenger safety if power goes out
The city has designed the $2.1-billion Confederation Line LRT system so the trains can keep running even if an electricity outage hits one of the power conversion facilities along the 12.5-kilometre transit line.
In an email relayed by city communications officer Carly Wolff, O-Train construction director Steve Cripps said the LRT could continue running if one of the power converters conked out.
“In the event of a power outage in a specific station, the electrical design of the statio -
Reevely: 'This was pretty much a worst-case scenario' — inside Hydro Ottawa's brutal weekend
As electricity started flowing into blacked-out neighbourhoods Sunday night, Hydro Ottawa’s brass watched screens in their Merivale Road command centre.
Besides experts monitoring the capital’s power system at workstations, the utility’s functional headquarters has social-media feeds up where everybody can see them. In normal times, when technicians and engineers haven’t spent two days figuring out how to work around a tornado-blasted transmission station to restore power -
Tornado aftermath: Police warn against unnecessary visits to view destruction, disaster tourism
Ottawa police on Monday continued to warn those who do not live in the affected storm and tornado areas to avoid travelling to them.
“First and foremost, it’s not a secure area,” said Chief Charles Bordeleau, at the corner of Thomas A. Dolan Parkway and Dunrobin Road in Dunrobin — an area with multiple road closures and detours.
“It’s not a safe area. There’s a lot of trucks, a lot of people moving around, a lot of equipment, so (non-essential people) ne -

Bagnall: Construction skills tight in advance of rebuilding effort post-tornado
The terrifying thing about tornadoes is their randomness, with disproportionately few suffering the brunt of the pain.
So it was in the capital region Friday when mere hundreds of households — out of more than half a million across the region — were stunned by the sudden turn in their lives.
In the days to come, the shock of what’s been lost will in many cases be replaced by frustration at how long it takes to put things back to normal, at least as far as physical things are co -

St. John Ambulance save Army runner in cardiac arrest
Volunteers with St. John Ambulance Canada saved the life of a runner who collapsed just as he was about to cross the finish line of the Canada Army run Sunday.
After cardiopulmonary resuscitation and a shock from an automatic external defibrillator delivered by a pair of the organization’s medical first responders, the man regained sinus rhythm.

Tornado aftermath: As residents toss mountains of spoiled food, armies of suppliers have mobilized to keep supplies moving
It wasn’t just emergency crews that were working overtime on the weekend.
Armies of food suppliers were clocking extra hours to ensure that supplies of perishable items would stay safe during a two-day-long blackout, while organizing armies of shipping trucks to beef up deliveries to grocery stores across the national capital area.
Cynthia Thompson, a spokeswoman for Sobeys Inc., said the company’s operations team was working overtime on the weekend ensuring that stores that were out -
Tornado aftermath: How to prepare for a worst-case scenario
Candles but no matches, a near-empty gas tank, no cash when the debit system was down — even in the stores that had power.
Guilty!
Not all of us were as prepared as we could have been for the two devastating tornados and storm that passed through the Ottawa-Gatineau region Friday — although some get-ready guides from government skip what in 2018 seem like essentials, such as a back-up power supply to charge cellphones when many of us have cut the cord to a landline.

Tornado aftermath: Volunteers step in to help hundreds of elderly residents without food after storm
A four storey building that is home to about 40 elderly residents is still without power Monday after a couple of tornadoes ripped through the capital Firday.
The scene at 57 Bateman Dr. has attracted an army of volunteers who are standing outside cooking meals, running generators and taking water and supplies to the residents.
According to Amy McConnell, who runs a business that helps elderly people to find retirement accommodations, the outpouring of support from volunteers has been outstandin -

Today's letters: Tornado aftermath – Kudos to everyone who helped
Thanks, keep calm, and carry on
Re: Wreckage, resilience, Sept. 25.
While I was affected by the tornado with my power out for only two days, a mere inconvenience compared to what others are experiencing, my heart goes out to those who have had such devastation brought to the lives.
I would like to thank the many emergency crews who have been working tirelessly to restore power and provide safety and security to those who need it. “Keep calm and carry on.”

Richardson: Losing our power, however briefly, brought unexpected lessons
Like many people, I was forced by Friday’s storm and power outage into a kind of urban dweller’s survival mode. My first priority was to get my wife and son home safely from work. They had biked downtown that morning but by afternoon the sky had turned black, overloaded drains erupted like geysers, and our neighbourhood’s old maple and cedar trees whipped around in the wind and rain as though composed of something far more flexible than wood.
Safely together again as the late a -

There was considerable damage all around: toppled trees all over the streets, on top of roofs and on a car. The place looked like an explosion had gone off, leaving an ugly mess.
My roof took the brunt of the damage, howeve -
