Firefighters climbed over downed trees to get into homes Saturday morning and check on residents in Nepean’s devastated Arlington Woods neighbourhood, which took a direct hit from the second tornado to land in Ottawa on Friday.
Dozens of 100-year-old white pines, part of a beloved forest the area is known for, were snapped like matchsticks and trees crashed through roofs, into windows and onto cars. The worst hit roads were closed to traffic as workers laboured to take trees off roofs and

Tornado aftermath: Residents scramble to gather emergency supplies
Bijan Sulaimany drove for more than an hour from his Barrhaven home on Saturday morning, looking for an open gas station in the wake of Friday’s tornado that ripped through the region. One after the other was closed until he arrived at Drummond’s Gas on Bronson Avenue, between Carling Avenue and the Queensway, miles and miles from home. And, just as Sulaimany was about to steer his Nissan into the lot, it ran out of gas.
Fortunately, Sulaimany had with him a portable gas container to -

Tornado aftermath: In Kinburn, storm leaves trail of selective destruction
The tornado that made a direct hit on Dunrobin hit the Kinburn area first, knocking down a house, shredding barns and trees and stripping roofs.
But damage was selective. In some cases, the storm left part of a building intact while leaving an adjoining part as matchsticks and rubble.
The storm ripped the roof and side from a barn on Carry’s Side Road, allowing its sole occupant, a horse named Viety, to escape. Viety seemed spooked by the experience, but has since been relocated to a neigh -

Editorial: All politics is local – remember that on Oct. 22
Today is a countdown anniversary of sorts: one month until municipal election voting day. Many Ottawans are only vaguely aware there is a local election campaign on, let alone that it also includes school boards. We debate national politics at length – Who’s got more support, Justin Trudeau or Andrew Scheer? Who’s least popular, Jagmeet Singh or Maxime Bernier? – but ignore civic contests at our peril.
How about asking these questions instead? Who arranges to have p -
Today's letters: Doug Ford, don't tamper with disability allowance
Don’t mess with disability funding, premier
I am 57 years old and have lived with cerebral palsy since birth, with other ailments causing severe pain and immobility. Through no choice of my own, I have had to depend on the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) for many years.
Premier Doug Ford plans to cut the promised increase in ODSP from three per cent to 1.5 per cent for this year’s allowance. This is deplorable, dehumanizing and degrading. Why is he doing this? People -

As a violent storm ripped through the national capital region Friday night, leaving hundreds displaced, aid agencies were working “miracles” to help people on both sides of the river.
“It’s devastation,” said Maryse Gaudreault, the MNA for Hull. “It’s devastating when you hear that that many roofs and buildings were swept away by this tornado, and you think about the people inside.”

Updated: 'It's devastating': Tornado levels houses, leaves trail of destruction
A tornado cut a swath of destruction across west end Ottawa and Gatineau Friday, flattening homes and businesses, overturning vehicles and leaving at least one person with life-threatening injuries and seriously injuring several more.
Environment Canada meteorologist Peter Kimball said photos of the damage indicate the tornado will probably probably rank as an EF2 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, which rates tornado intensity on a scale of 1 to 5. An EF2 has winds or of between 138-177 km/h.

'I thought we were going to die': Eye witnesses describe Dunrobin storm
Ben Milks was looking at Twitter images of Dunrobin, the village where he grew up, when he recognized the wreckage of his mother’s house. He dialled her number in a panic. Luckily she had a cell phone with her and was able to tell him that she escaped.
His mother, Kim Azulay, was born in 1954 and had lived in the three-room bungalow across from the meat market for her entire life.
