Environment Canada is adding a tornado warning to its list of bad weather that might hit the capital today.
The agency had already forecast strong southwesterly winds of 70 to 80 km/h with even higher gusts during expected thunderstorms as a cold front tracks across the region sweeping away a sticky day.
Environment Canada issued the special weather statement, along with a severe thunderstorm watch, warning of strong winds in the late afternoon and early evening then northwest winds gusting to 6 -

He was due back in Ottawa court on Nov. 1, with a four-week murder trial set to begin in March.
Frenette surrendered to police at the end of 2016, five days after detectives obtain -
Artist angry her paintings were used to target Shepherds of Good Hope, wants to help raise money
Italian artist Cristina Guggeri says she is appalled her paintings have been misappropriated by an Ottawa landlord in order to target the Shepherds of Good Hope.
“The Daily Duty was designed to highlight the equality of humanity and beyond,” said Guggeri on Friday. “It aims precisely to defend the weak strata of society like the homeless, the marginalized and all the unfortunate people. I do not like what is happening on Murray Street in Ottawa.”

Incumbent councillor's steakhouse fundraiser cancelled because of 'threats,' he says
An incumbent councillor candidate who was to be the recipient of campaign donations during a steakhouse lunch with bigwigs in the development industry says he has cancelled the event.
“There’s been threats and intimidation of the place where we were supposed to have it,” Jean Cloutier said Friday.
“That’s completely unacceptable in a democratic process and I’m very disappointed by that. All our campaign did is book space at Al’s Steakhouse. I am suspendi -

No Ottawa police officer committed any misconduct when they returned a boy to his Mountie father, a man who would later be convicted of one of the most severe child abuse and torture cases in the local force’s history, according to a report to the police board.
“The case of child abuse against this young boy was difficult for our entire community. It was important that all aspects of this case were reviewed to understand whether we as a police service could have done something differ -

Shepherds' injection site to be replaced while province reviews the issue
While the provincial government deliberates on the future of supervised injection sites, Ottawa’s large temporary site at Shepherds of Good Hope has run out of space and will be replaced with a bigger one to cope with overwhelming demand.
Shepherds of Good Hope and Ottawa Inner City Health set up a 40-foot trailer in a parking lot off Murray Street behind their building a year ago to serve a growing need until a permanent, indoor supervised injection site could be built.

Repeat drunk driver hits car, pole in morning crash: Police
A 31-year-old woman, who was already banned from driving, had a blood-alcohol level more than double the legal limit when she was arrested Friday morning after crashing into another car and a light standard in Gatineau, police allege.
A passerby reported the two-vehicle crash at 7:30 a.m.

Reevely: Ontario's $15B deficit is bad, but no one should be shocked
The Ontario government now has a more honest take on its financial situation than it did under the Liberals, though Tories professing shock at what their summer investigation found are overselling it pretty hard.
This year’s deficit is $15 billion, Finance Minister Vic Fedeli announced Friday morning in a speech to Toronto’s Economic Club, not the $6.6 billion the Liberals claimed in their last budget in the spring. He has the results of an inquiry led by former B.C. premier Gordon C -

Gormley: As Afghanistan empties out, talk of liberalism rings hollow
KABUL – Things are worse here in Afghanistan than they have been in years, and as ever, that things are getting worse in Afghanistan is a problem partly caused by things outside of Afghanistan.
That Afghanistan is now the deadliest country in the world for journalists; that more civilians have been killed in Afghanistan during the first half of this year than in any other year since the UN started counting the bodies in 2009; that Taliban fighters are now active in 70 per cent of Afgh -

The day Smiths Falls' luck finally turned: The story of a marijuana boom town
SMITHS FALLS, Ont. — No one saw it coming, not even Bruce Linton or Chuck Rifici, the politically astute entrepreneurs who launched Canopy Growth, the marijuana juggernaut responsible for Smiths Falls’ unexpected resurgence.
Five years ago, Linton and Rifici rescued a 470,000-square-foot facility in the town’s north end from demolition. It had not been their first choice. The plant had been abandoned in 2008 by U.S. chocolate maker Hershey. Linton and Rifici intended to us -
Cornwall's singing fire chief earns props for more than music parodies
Cornwall’s singing fire chief may be getting a lot of attention for his classic Queen parody in what has to be the king of fire prevention videos but his pipes are just one of the talents that won him an award for being Canada’s fire chief of the year this week.
Chief Pierre Voisine parodies Bohemian Rhapsody — handling all four parts himself — in a fun new fire-prevention video released Thursday that’s aimed at getting people to make sure they have life-saving smok -
Ryerson: Fixing Phoenix means fixing management too
The government says it will start testing prototypes of replacements for the Phoenix pay system very soon. But have the essential lessons been learned?
Phoenix is simply the biggest and most obvious example of a wider management and leadership malaise that has been growing for decades within the federal public service.

Take Back the Night marks 40th year
Marchers joined in the annual Take Back the Night event in downtown Ottawa on Thursday, the 40th anniversary of the march against sexual and gender-based violence.

This year’s events began with a rally at 6 p.m., -
