The posters show a series of paintings by Italian artist Cristina Guggeri with leaders such as the Dalai Lama, Angela Merkel, Barack Obama and Queen Elizabeth sitting on toilets. On the posters, the words “What I see makes me $#!T” ar -
Reevely: Ontario's Green Energy Act soon to be a goner
Ontario’s Green Energy Act hasn’t been doing much for a while but the Progressive Conservatives will get as much mileage as they can out of burying it.
Former premier Dalton McGuinty treated the 2009 law as a signature accomplishment, meant to be the legal foundation for a major transformation of Ontario’s economy. It didn’t do that. But it did galvanize opposition to the Liberals especially in rural Ontario, was key to electricity-system reforms that raised prices, and p -
Doucet spreads scorn for developments that don't help communities
Clive Doucet on Thursday unleashed a scattershot heap of scorn for developments that he says eat up greenspace and suck the livability out of communities.
Doucet, who’s running for mayor in the Oct. 22 municipal election, spoke to reporters outside the fence around the new artificial turf sports field at Immaculata High School off Main Street in Old Ottawa East. He liked seeing students playing on the field, but he was annoyed that the surrounding community has been blocked from using the -

Councillor wins support for looking into licensing home-based businesses
The bylaw department should look into licensing home-based businesses as part of a sweeping municipal regulations review, a committee decided on Thursday.
Knoxdale-Merivale Coun. Keith Egli won support for his surprise motion at a community and protective services meeting.
Egli rebuffed a suggestion that he only wants to wrap home-based businesses in red tape.
“Not at all,” Egli said after the meeting. “The majority of home-based businesses in the city operate legitimately, wel -

Iversen and Holder: Global pledge of gender equality comes up short
Twenty-six out of 195. That is the number of countries with women foreign ministers. This week, as female foreign ministers from around the world convene in Montreal for the first meeting of its kind, 87 per cent of countries didn’t have the option to send a representative.
The unsavoury numbers come just three years after governments globally made a promise to eradicate gender inequality by 2030 through the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Adam: Municipal race – Bilingualism may determine winner in Innes ward
If there is a ward in the municipal election where the candidates are so closely matched it is virtually impossible to determine a front-runner, let alone a winner, it is Innes in Ottawa’s east end. The problem is not just how closely matched the four candidates are, but how the ability to speak French – or not – could be a deal-breaker. About one-third of the population in Innes ward is francophone and French is essential.
The candidates are vying to replace Coun. Jody Mitic, -

The strongest music achieves unity with its listeners, vibraphonist Stefan Bauer says
At the best of times, playing the vibraphone can be the musical equivalent of gymnastics. Four mallets, a pair gripped in each hand, fly across the instrument’s aluminum bars in a whirling display of precision and power. Now imagine trying to play your vibraphone when you’ve broken your collarbone. That’s Stefan Bauer’s dilemma.

Antiques: Scent bottle is a real catch
Q: My great uncle, born in 1874 was the keeper of this bottle which he kept in a curio cabinet in my childhood. It might have belonged to another relative who worked in the china department of Woolworths from 1910-1930. Is it possible that such an item would be sold at Woolworths? My uncle also inherited items from a friend who was a scholar at the University of Leipzig circa 1898. My wife and I would be interested in learning anything you can tell us about this attractive object.

From the Archives: Jennifer Teague —There will never be closure' until the truth is known, father says
Originally published January 26, 2008
Jean and Ed Teague went to court yesterday hoping to find out why Kevin Davis killed their daughter. They didn’t get an answer.
“He gave no kind of reason — nothing,” Mrs. Teague said minutes after Mr. Davis was sent to prison for life for strangling 18-year-old Jennifer Teague in September 2005. “It was senseless. Totally senseless.”
What Mr. and Mrs. Teague did hear for the first time, however, were the chillin -

This is the third article in a three-part series looking at sexual violence on university and college campuses.

Sexual education for students has become a political flashpoint in Ontario.
The Ford government’s decision to repeal more progressive Wynne-era school curriculum has resulted in the omission of subjects such as gender identity, tech safety and consent.

Lombardi: AI thinkers mustn't duck ethics debate on autonomous weapons
Earlier this summer, Yoshua Bengio, the McGill-based Artificial Intelligence pioneer and one of the world’s leading authorities on neural networks and machine-learning, added his name to a growing global list of experts and laboratories in the field that are pledging to have no role in the creation of what are called “lethal autonomous weapons” (LAWs). The signatories’ premise is as benign as it is unsound: that machines must never be given the authority to decide when to -
Today's letters: A winning election platform
Here’s how to win my vote in municipal election
Public consultation is mandated in municipal decision-making processes, but unfortunately there is no legal definition for “consultation” in this country. As a result, public notification and meetings are often conducted after everything has already been decided, and people’s input and objections are disregarded. This has been characterized as “listen intently but ignore completely.”
The United Kingdom has addres -
Best: Why we aren’t ready for the next financial crisis
Ten years ago, as the global economy slipped ever closer to a total meltdown, regulators were slow to recognize the severity of the problem because they were looking in the wrong direction.
Transcripts from the U.S. Federal Reserve’s policymaking committee meeting that took place on Sept. 16, just as the financial giant Lehman Brothers was allowed to fail, include 129 mentions of “inflation,” and just five of “recession.” Not surprisingly, given their narrow focus o -
