A new “made-in-Ontario” plan for climate change will come this fall, the province’s environment minister Rod Phillips said Friday, at the same time as the Progressive Conservatives ask judges to strike down the federal government’s national carbon tax.
“We’ll talk about the targets when we bring forward the plan,” Phillips said in a short appearance in Toronto to talk about the province’s legal arguments against the federal tax. “That’s -

A graphic 18-second video of the incident was spread through social media and widely shared. The video shows a young male striking an apparently transgendered girl. 'She's suffered enough': Caryk has no intention to sue Karlsson but still wants answers, court hears
TORONTO — Monika Caryk wants an answer to a simple question, her lawyer argued in a Toronto courtroom Friday morning.
On what basis and with what evidence did Melinda Karlsson form the belief that Caryk was harassing her online. Caryk — who like Karlsson, is the spouse of a former Ottawa Senator — is asking the court to force Karlsson to turn that information over to her in an application for what’s called a “Norwich” order.

Yee: OC Transpo's casino ads shouldn't be targeting East Asians
For the last couple of months, my trips to Chinatown have been fragmented with disgust and disappointment.
Multiple bus stops in the area have been decked out in full ad-wraps featuring orientalist depictions of East Asian women as promotions for the Rideau Carleton Raceway Casino.
The advertisements target the Chinatown area. One bus ad is located outside of Plant Recreation Centre with a billboard, one by McNabb Park and others near streets such as Preston, Rochester and Empress.

Kurl: Doug Ford shows Conservative parties aren't what they used to be
Notwithstanding the audible gasps from the chattering classes and the vocal cries from opponents in the face of Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s vow to use the Constitution’s notwithstanding clause to shrink the size of Toronto city council, one thing is for certain: This is not your grandfather’s Conservative party.
That couldn’t be more obvious as stalwart grandfathers of the party, such as former prime minister Brian Mulroney and former Ontario premier Bill Davis took turns -

Coyote, not criminals, suspected in Kemptville cat deaths
Provincial police in the Kemptville area are trying to calm cat owners who anxiously contacted the station to report their felines were dead.
Police received six such calls Thursday, the day after a local weekly newspaper published a story about an increase in missing or dead cats in the area.
“Police, with the assistance of a Conservation Officer have investigated the reported incidents,” police noted in a matter-of-fact news release.
“Currently, there is no reason to sus -

Warm, sticky temps in the outlook, but no rain in sight
When’s the last time you’ve seen a three-day forecast with no mention of precipitation?
Right?
It’s looking like a glorious weekend in the capital with highs in the upper 20s.
The good times start Friday with a forecast high of 27 C under mainly sunny skies. Granted it comes with a “feels like” reading of 34.
Some clouds are expected to roll in Friday night, with fog patches developing and a low of 19 C.
The humid air hangs around Saturday.
Fog patches will bur -
MacDougall: What if Justin Trudeau started Canada's overdue abortion conversation?
Did too much political success come too quickly for Justin Trudeau?
It’s a question that bears asking as the prime minister’s losses pile up. Pipelines are the latest object to rub elbows with electoral reform in the government’s rubbish bin, with the carbon tax and NAFTA having a look in to see if there’s space.
Could a more experienced leader have done better? We’ll never know. But having accrued a huge chunk of political capital with his unexpected majority win, -

For Chelsea Handler, the secret to dealing with close-minded conservatives is the marijuana plant. Not the leafy green part of it that has to be dried and smoked, but the chemical compounds that are made into edible treats. They’ve been a “game changer,” -
Today's letters: Senior living, clutter on the canal, one small step
A ‘Seniors Services’ benefit would help
Re: Help retirement homes keep their clients out of hospital, Aug. 24.
It is important to provide some additional information and context around what retirement communities are and what, by law, they are allowed to do.
The author makes a good point: Some residents choose to move into retirement communities because they have had a life change. It might be a health issue, but it could also be the death of a spouse, or loneliness. A 2018 poll -

Lockheed Martin tweet on Canadian Surface Combatant creates a stir
The Lockheed Martin-BAE team pursuing the Canadian Surface Combatant created a stir on social media among defence observers when it suggested earlier this week that its bid had been qualified for the program.
Three consortiums had submitted bids for the CSC program, with a winner expected to be announced by the end of the year.
Industry is closely watching which firms might be qualified for the $60 billion project.
So on Sept. 10 a tweet by the Lockheed Martin/BAE team raised more than a few eye -
CityFolk Day 2: David Byrne and Co. put on a brilliant show
Rock legend David Byrne demonstrated a unparallelled level of stagecraft during an absolutely riveting headlining performance at CiyFolk on Thursday that also included a dig at Ontario Premier Doug Ford.“This is the place in the set where I urge everyone to vote,” Byrne said, as American artists do when they’re on the road in the leadup to the U.S. midterm elections.“There’s good reason for Canadians to feel a little bit smug,” he acknowledged, before adding t
