Ottawa researcher highlights role of "natural killer cells" in cancer immunotherapy
An Ottawa scientist has given researchers a new target in their quest to fully unleash the human immune system’s natural ability to destroy cancer cells.
Dr. Michele Ardolino and his colleagues have discovered that Natural Killer (NK) cells — a type of immune cell — play a crucial role in the success of some of today’s leading immunotherapy drugs, such as Keytruda and Opdivo.
The finding challenges what scientists thought they knew about what made the drugs effective canc -

Anti-abortion activists set sights on bubble zone legislation
Six months after it was introduced, anti-abortion activists have set their sights on a repeal of Ontario’s “bubble zone” law that creates safe areas around abortion providers.
Jack Fonseca, of Campaign Life Coalition, said his organization plans to lobby Premier Doug Ford and his government to revoke the Protecting a Woman’s Right to Access Abortion Services Act, which came into effect last February. He said he is optimistic it will do so.

Reevely: City says public can't see contractor's plan to get LRT going
The consortium building Ottawa’s $2.1-billion light-rail system won’t let the city release a copy of a work schedule that would supposedly see the system ready to roll by the end of November instead of in the new year.
The document is pivotal in the argument between city hall and the Rideau Transit Group (RTG) over just how close the 12.5-kilometre line through downtown is to opening. It’s so secret, though, that even the language in the contract between the city and RTG that g -

Coyle: Why Ottawa needs to take green space seriously
Neighbourhood green space in Ottawa is precious – and disappearing, so it’s no surprise that residents get angry when they do not receive support from the city to help them safeguard these invaluable places to gather and enjoy recreational activities or leisure time.

U.S. saxist Darius Jones, vocalist Emilie Lesbros fuse unfettered jazz with French avant-gardism
Darius Jones, the bracing and celebrated American alto saxophonist and composer, admits that his knowledge of French is “non-existent.”
Still, Jones was not deterred from initiating and plunging into an album-length collaboration with French vocalist Emilie Lesbros that set her evocative mother-tongue lyrics to his rugged and at times incendiary music, layering intrigue upon intrigue.

Mott: Sending students to court for rowdy street parties is unfair
A joint pilot project launched by Queen’s University, Kingston police and the City of Kingston to quell the infamous annual chaos of Queen’s University parties can be aptly summarized as: Empty the streets by filling the courtrooms.

Suleiman: Tax agency's targeting of my mosque just doesn't make sense
On Aug. 22, Muslims around the globe observed Eid Al-Adha, one of two major festivals celebrated each year by people of the Islamic faith. As has been the tradition, the South East Ottawa community congregated at the Ottawa Islamic Centre and Assalam Mosque to commemorate this important annual ritual.
However, something was eerily different this year: Politicians from all three levels of government who represent the sizeable Muslim community of South East Ottawa stayed away and decided not to sh -

Glavin: Canada should break silence on Beijing's treatment of Uighurs
It will come as news to nobody that the Communist regime in Beijing lies through its teeth about the state of human rights in China, but nothing comes close to the lies Beijing tells to cover up its mounting persecution of Muslims. Those lies have been getting harder to tell, ever since Xi Jinping’s police state embarked upon measures so extreme and tyrannical that it’s become harder for the regime to keep the truth from getting to the outside world.

CityFolk Day 1: Clear skies and '80s nostalgia
The 25th anniversary edition of the Ottawa Folk Festival, currently known as CityFolk, opened Wednesday at Lansdowne Park under clear skies and a blast of memories from the ’80s, thanks to Steve Earle celebrating a milestone of his own.
The American roots-rocker and his band, The Dukes, are touring to mark the 30th anniversary of the seminal 1988 album Copperhead Road. In front of an Ottawa crowd that looked to be composed mostly of people who came of age in the ’80s and probably saw -
