The number of Lyme disease cases in Ottawa has fallen 75 per cent this year, down from record-breaking numbers last year, when the city was declared to be an area at risk of the tick-borne disease.
As of Sept. 1, Ottawa Public Health had recorded 42 cases of Lyme disease. At the same time last year, the number was 169.
“There are multiple factors that may play a role in the trend of lower Lyme disease cases this year,” Ottawa Public Health spokeswoman Donna Casey said in an email. &l

A coroner’s inquest into whether flaws in Ontario’s 911 system might have played a role in the deaths of a Casselman woman and three people killed in a Sudbury-area boating mishap is set for next month.
Chief Coroner Dr. Dirk Huyer announced Friday that the inquest into the deaths of Kathryn Missen and the three boaters would be heard in Sudbury on Oct. 15-19 and in Ottawa on Oct. 22-Nov. 2.

Moose Consortium requested railway protection after council OK'd 65-storey project
Even as the City of Ottawa waits for its day in court, the organization that has prompted the city to hire outside lawyers to defend plans for the Prince of Wales Bridge has been trying to get federal authorities to protect potential rail corridors around Bayview station.
The city is appealing an order by the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA), which has told the city to discontinue the rail line in the area or fix the bridge so it could be used by another rail operator 12 months after be -
'We hear your prayers,' say family of Ottawa boy missing on St. Lawrence River
The parents of an Ottawa boy missing since a boat capsized on the St. Lawrence River last weekend hailed the “heroic” first responders and citizens who have hunted for the “kind, gentle soul” as the continuing search was scaled back Friday.
They thanked police, border services officers, firefighters and the private divers, boaters, kayakers and cottagers who searched for the 11-year-old “who loves life and loves to laugh.”

Egan: At election time, what of the poor? Or ever?
The poor are always with us … except during elections, which are all about power and things grandly solvable.
This is in mind while touring Caldwell Family Centre in one of Ottawa’s old-school public housing “projects” — a couple of 14-storey highrises surrounded by tightly-built townhomes, a lot of asphalt and one Quickie store.
It is just after lunch. Things are a little chaotic in the centre, always are, as there is just no room to move. The centre began before -
Reevely: 'My millennials' pull Clive Doucet back into politics for one more fight
Clive Doucet was a week into his campaign for mayor before the significance of what he was doing snapped into focus.
“I couldn’t ask people to give money, I couldn’t ask people to volunteer and give their time, if I wasn’t giving it everything I could,” he says. “I could be half-hearted about it and it would still look like a campaign and it would give you journalists something to write about, but it wouldn’t be right.”
If he did that and fell shor -

Gormley: End the sham of awarding honorary citizenship, Canada
I suppose we could continue asking why Aung San Suu Kyi’s honorary Canadian citizenship has not yet been revoked, but it seems better to ask why honorary Canadian citizenships have ever been given.
It is true that allowing the genocide-enabler of Myanmar to keep her distinction would diminish the value of all honorary citizenships if honorary citizenships were actually all that honourable to begin with. But honorary citizenships are the honorary doctorates of global statecraft: a gift from -
Capital region's jobless rate climbs in August — but signs still point to strong economy
The capital region’s jobless rate climbed to 4.7 per cent in August from 4.5 per cent in July, Statistics Canada reported Friday.
It was the sixth straight month that the unemployment rate came in below five per cent, usually a sign of a strong economy. The slight deterioration from July to August reflected the net loss of 1,600 jobs while the size of the labour force, which includes people looking for work, declined by just 200.
Employment losses were most significant in education and pro -

Basketweave flooring, white subway tiled walls and a re-purposed vintage cabinet are reminiscent of mid-century modern design – what Segaert refers to as “the greatest design period in history.”
The house in Ottawa’s west end community near Iris Street is Segaert and his partner’s first home. It was built around 1960 by prolific builder Robert -

Today's letters: Military spending, female athletes, Nike protests
Bravo for stopping this military extravaganza
Re: Deputy Minister scales back military ceremony, Sept 4.
Kudos to DND Deputy Minister Jody Thomas for her refusal to approve the generals’ plan to spend more than $100,000 on a ceremony to mark the transfer of leadership in the armed forces.Such demonstrations of backbone and principle, when confronted with the bureaucracy’s wasteful approach to budget depletion, are sorely lacking in the civil service. However, even $24,000 for a -
