Sixty per cent of Ottawa’s public schools have either no or limited air-conditioning. All of the city’s Catholic schools have at least some air conditioning, and about a quarter of its schools are fully air-co -

Odjick, then 16, and Alexander, then 17, vanished on Sept. 6, 2008.
The teens left behind their wallets, purses, clothes and medication. Maisy sent a friend a message on Facebook later that mo -
Labour council needles Watson over unpaid 'internships'
Jim Watson says he changed the name of his previously described “internship” program after the Ottawa and District Labour Council called him out for using unpaid workers on his re-election campaign.
The labour council didn’t like that the mayoral incumbent advertised an application opportunity for unpaid interns to work on his campaign. Hiring unpaid interns would violate the province’s Employment Standards Act, the labour council pointed out on Wednesday.

Shaver: It's time we made visitors to Canada carry health insurance
Should all visitors to Canada have health insurance?
To answer this question, consider two main groups: The first is persons visiting the country for only a few days. The second is relatives staying for weeks or months, many with pre-existing conditions that make it difficult to buy insurance.
The asylum-seekers and illegal migrants entering mainly via Quebec are covered promptly by the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP). Yet Canada does not require medical insurance for those on a visitor vi -

House Works: Pocket joinery is ideal technique for DIY and home woodworking
If you’re planning to build cabinets, built-ins or even window and door trim at your place, pocket joinery is worth serious consideration. It offers a great way to make carpentry less complicated and more fun.

Wednesday could be muggiest Sept. 5 on record
Get ready to swelter Wednesday as the mercury hits a high of 31 C that will feel more like 41.
Showers are likely and there’s also a risk of a thunderstorm.
It could be the muggiest Sept. 5 since records began in 1953, noted local weather historian Rolf Campbell, who tweets as @YOW_Weather.

Today's letters: It's time for Trumpless Tuesdays
We need a day without The Donald
On Saturday, my wife and I watched the funeral of John McCain on television; we then watched a series of programs that dealt with the late senator’s remarkable life and career. In short, we spent a considerable amount of time watching television. When it was all over, we both felt that the experience had been uplifting. We also felt good for a different reason: We’d actually spent a few hours without seeing or hearing Donald Trump.
Then I got an idea. -

OC Transpo fall service changes raise transit users' ire
Transit can inspire frustration at the best of times, so it’s perhaps unsurprising that OC Transpo’s LRT-oriented fall service changes have provoked the ire of transit riders in affected areas of the city. But for some bus passengers, the adjustments they have to make as a result of the changes are more than a minor inconvenience.
“I have heard a lot of nightmare stories already,” said Sam Boswell of the newly formed Ottawa Transit Riders’ Group.

On the ground with special team of bylaw inspector and heritage planner
Perhaps the most tangible achievement of the Heritage Matters Task Force launched in 2016 by Mayor Jim Watson is the appointment of a special bylaw inspector tasked with keeping an eye on Ottawa’s most vulnerable and vacant heritage buildings.
In addition to the regular property-standards issues you might expect bylaw officers to be on the lookout for — such as broken windows, graffiti and long grass — the heritage inspector also keeps an eye on the unique attributes that quali -
Ottawa Votes 2018: Does heritage matter at the ballot box?
Children who were in kindergarten on the day Somerset House partially collapsed in October 2007 are in high school, now and there’s a good chance they’ll be licensed to drive a car before something comes of the vacant heritage building on the corner of Bank and Somerset.
The fall of Somerset House and the ensuing collective curiosity about its fate has outlasted mayors and city councillors, and outworn the patience of neighbouring businesses, residents and virtually anyone else in Ot -
