Reevely: Elementary teachers' union goes to court to quash sex-ed changes, 'snitch line'
On the first day of school for most students, the union representing elementary teachers went to court to fight the provincial government’s rollback of Ontario’s sexual education curriculum.
Its application for an injunction also asks for a judge to shut down the government website that encourages people to report teachers who use material included in the 2015 version of the curriculum but not the 1998 version Education Minister Lisa Thompson told them to return to using this summer. -

Among the five people on the boat when it flipped were the boy’s teen brother and his father, a veteran boater. They were among f -

The summer-time patrols targeted “disruptive and illegal behaviours in key areas of the city,” police said.
They teamed up with OC Transpo special constables for foot patrols and walked through several local bars with Alcohol and Gaming Commission inspectors.

ARMCHAIR MAYOR: City and schools can lead the charge against junk food
This fall, Ottawa elects a new city council and school board trustees. To help local candidates as they campaign, the Citizen asked people for one idea that would make the city a better place. This week, with all the kids back in class, Dr. Yoni Freedhoff offers much food for thought.
—The kids are not alright, at least not from a chronic disease perspective. From obesity to type 2 diabetes, to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and more, diet-related diseases, which when I went to medical -

City on track for $14.4-million budget surplus in — surprise — an election year
In a municipal election year, this might not be a huge surprise: the City of Ottawa could be on track to record a big budget surplus in 2018.
A mid-year budget update released ahead of Monday’s finance and economic development committee meeting predicts there will be $9.3 million left unspent in programs funded by property taxes, plus another $5.1 million surplus in the budget funded by water and sewer bills.
The $14.4-million projected surplus would be headed for city reserve funds, unles -

Denley: Mayor Jim Watson's garbage strategy gives off a bad odour
After eight years in office, it gets pretty difficult for a mayor to admit there are areas where he has dropped the ball. Delivering a plan to do better is equally unattractive because it inevitably takes us back to the dropped-the-ball problem.
That’s about the only way to explain Mayor Jim Watson’s weak response to the very real deficiencies in the way the city disposes of our garbage. People aren’t demanding action at the doors, Watson says. Given that, he seems to be feelin -

Sticky start to school year but it should be cooler by Thursday
Kids are back to school Tuesday but it’s anything but autumnal out there with mainly sunny skies and a high of 26 C that will feel more like 30.
Wednesday is even hotter but cooler days are on the way, Environment Canada predicts.
The first day of school forecast for many local students also features fog patches burning off in the morning, a UV index of 8 or very high and a low of 16 C under partly-cloudy skies.
Wednesday starts out sunny before a few clouds creep in bringing a 40 per cent -

“The rush to appoint a new director before October 22 is being seen as undemocratic and unconstructive,” he wrote to trustees. “It makes sense for the new -
