With faces bearing looks ranging from “Where’s my residence?” to “Where’s the party?”, thousands of students moved into Ottawa’s post-secondary schools Saturday.
And hundreds of campus volunteers from Carleton University, the University of Ottawa and Algonquin College, many of them colour-co-ordinated to represent their course major, were on hand to (very) loudly point the newbies in the right direction.

It was not immediately clear how many dogs were on the property or whether officials had removed the animals.

Obituary: 'Medical marvel' David Lafrance had six kidney transplants
Ottawa’s David Lafrance received his first donated kidney in 1969 from his father. His sixth and final organ transplant took place in April 2013 when his brother, Phil, gave him a kidney.
Lafrance died recently at the age of 58 from pancreatic cancer. He refused chemotherapy because he didn’t want anything to damage his kidney.
Instead, he spent his last six months pursuing a bucket list that included a Boston Bruins home game, a guest appearance on CHEZ 106 and a trip to Las Ve -

Park or development? Community association, builder at loggerheads
A local builder and a neighbourhood community association both agree that a historic, wooded property at 21 Withrow Ave. in Nepean would make a great park — but the question of whether it’s possible is where they don’t see eye-to-eye.
At a rally Friday, Theberge Homes president Joey Theberge and City View Community Association president Joan Clark discussed, very cordially, the future of the property in which they’re both deeply invested. The conversation revealed th -

It's back: the humidity, that is, with possible showers Sunday and Monday
While we’ve had a reprieve from this summer’s humid conditions for the past few days, it turns out the humidex was only hiding.
Saturday of Labour Day weekend should be mainly cloudy, with clearing coming early in the afternoon.
Environment Canada is predicting a high of 28 C with a humidex of 35 and a UV index of 7. Tonight should see a low of 19 C.
Winds should be from the south at 20 km/hour Saturday morning.

Letters to the editor: Pipeline politics fuels our conversation
Congratulations to the court
The Federal Court of Appeal is to be congratulated on squashing the federal government’s plans to proceed with the construction of the Trans Mountain pipeline. In a unanimous vote, the court reached its decision to disallow construction, based on two important issues: Firstly, that the Liberal government failed to adequately consult First Nations. Secondly, the court found that the National Energy Board had failed in its duty to conduct a comprehensive risk ass -
Intoxication sex-assault ruling will affect tiny number of cases, law prof says
A new ruling that a person can use extreme drunkenness as a defence on a sexual assault charge will not open the door to everyone who thinks one can get drunk and commit assault, argues an Ottawa law professor.
Blair Crew, who teaches law at the University of Ottawa, says lawyers are sharply split in their views of the new Ontario Superior Court ruling.
But he also said the ruling will affect only a tiny number of cases.
Earlier this month, Judge Nancy Spies ruled that a 1995 federal law is unco -
Editorial: A messy week in pipeline politics and law
Since taking office, Justin Trudeau has sought to portray his government as a champion for First Nations reconciliation and for the energy industry.
This week’s court decision on the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project appears to show the federal government faltering on both fronts.
The Federal Court of Appeals overturned the government’s approval of the pipeline project.
The court found the government had failed to adequately consult with Indigenous groups, and had not properl -

Gormley: Aussie leader 'spill' highlights precarious problem of the parliamentary world
When Australian political parties intentionally conspire to remove their leaders, they refer to their actions in terms that one usually reserves for accidentally tipping over a glass of milk: a leadership “spill,” they call it. With stunning regularity and deft coordination, Australian political factions of every ideological stripe go out of their way to knock their own leaders down. Oops!
Now that Malcolm Turnbull has been spilt, a good number of people are crying over it. As well t -
