Egan: You can buy your dream home, but hot water heater only for rent
Buyers of new homes across Ottawa are often forced to rent their hot-water systems, at rates they don’t like and terms they don’t control.
In the aftermath of this newspaper’s coverage of suspect door-to-door sales of home appliances — water softeners, air cleaners — a number of readers have pointed to an issue right under our noses, practised by some of our biggest companies.
It is common in today’s sales agreements to have a clause that requires buyers to re -

Kurl: Trudeau must demonstrate that he stood up to Trump
The end may be near for the latest round of NAFTA talks.
Despite stunning, leaked revelations the U.S. president has no intention of compromising, if Canadian negotiators are indeed able to conclude a deal in this week of frenzied talks that have tested political resolve, bladder capacity, and credulity, it will be an anxious country awaiting details. The hard work for government officials may be almost over. As soon as it is, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s crucial test of boosting the pa -

Letter: Dear Wayne Scanlan, thank you for everything
Growing up in Kanata in the 1990s, I vividly remember waking up at 6 a.m. for weekend practices at John Mlacak Arena. I remember arriving at practice already in full gear, the cold, crisp morning rink air hitting my throat and my eyes. But perhaps my fondest memories revolve around what became my morning pre-hockey routine: reading Wayne Scanlan’s latest article in the Ottawa Citizen while eating breakfast.
In some ways, Wayne taught me how to read. In other ways, he was integral in develo -
OC Transpo's LRT-influenced route changes kick in on Sunday
On Sunday, OC Transpo’s new fall bus service will come into effect, and for many people the route numbers on the bus will look a little different.
Don’t worry, it’s all part of the plan as the system gets, as it likes to say, #ready4rail. It’s moving towards more of a feeder/trunk system meaning that, when the LRT opens (hopefully in November), more buses will feed passengers towards LRT stations.
The changes will mostly affect people who live and/or work in downtown, Orl -

When police arrived, the man ran off.
The officers followed on foot, and subsequently -
Minor drought continues across the region
The low-level drought that has been with us for most of the summer is continuing across the region — except in the Kemptville area, where it’s a little more serious.
Both the Rideau and Mississippi Conservation Authorities say we remain in a “Level One” drought, which is the least serious of three levels. However, the Kemptville Creek watershed, which extends down near Brockville, is in a Level Two.
This makes water levels look like the lower levels usually seen later in -

MacDougall: Journalists are addicted to Twitter, and it's poisoning their journalism
What’s the problem with the media?
Ping a journalist that question, and you’ll get back chapter and verse about the money problems facing newsrooms and the indifference of advertising-stealing platforms such as Facebook and Google.
Ask a random bloke on the street, however, and there’s a good chance the answer will be “bias” or “trust,” as in: “I don’t trust the press, they’re all biased.”
Ah, yes. The “fake” news. The -

80-year-old handyman goes on $8,800 fraud vacation
An 80-year-old part-time handyman allegedly took himself on a pricey, but illegal, vacation to Alberta after a Gananoque man handed him his credit card to buy supplies.
The man had hired the octogenarian jack-of-all-trades to do some work around the house for him. The credit card was handed over so that the handyman could go buy supplies.
He did not buy any supplies.
Rather, in what is potentially the least complicated con in modern history, the man packed up and headed west, say police.

And the Oscar goes to…: Ottawa scientists were pioneers in animation technology
At a special Academy Awards ceremony in March 1997, a pair of retired National Research Council scientists from Ottawa, Nestor Burtnyk and Marceli Wein, were called to the podium by actor Helen Hunt to receive Oscar awards (certificates in their case, not statuettes) for their pioneering roles in developing computer animation close to a quarter century earlier.
In the early 1970s, Burtnyk developed and wrote a revolutionary program that allowed computers to generate in-between animation frames t -
Firefighters cut roof off van to free woman trapped in early-morning rollover
A woman escaped with minor injuries Thursday morning after a dramatic rollover in the east end in which firefighters had to cut the roof off of her van to extricate her.
Ottawa Fire Services say they received a call about a vehicle that had rolled into a field on Trim Road near Springridge Drive at 3:57 a.m. this morning.
When they got to the scene, they found the van on its side, a one woman still trapped inside.
The woman was still conscious, and Ottawa firefighters had to cut off the roof of -

The sun is mostly shining on your long weekend plans
Today is Friday of the Labour Day long weekend, which makes it technically the final work day of the summer. And, with apologies to anyone reading this at work, what a day to be outside.
There’s a whole lot of sun in the forecast today, a comfortable high of 24 C, and the possibility of some light clouds later in the afternoon.
It would not be a bad day to play hooky, in other words.
The rest of the weekend, if you’re sticking around in town, is looking pretty good, too.
There’ -

Armchair mayor: Build a city that takes land claims seriously
This fall, Ottawa elects a new city council. To help local candidates as they campaign, the Citizen asked people for ONE idea that would make the city a better place. This week, Anishinabe artist Jay Odjick highlights economic partnerships for First Nations.

Today's letters: Don't give up on supply management
Supply management worth a fight
Tom Blackwell, Andrew MacDougall and Christie Blatchford this week have all suggested the need to scrap or sacrifice supply management for our dairy, chicken and egg producers in the interest of signing a NAFTA agreement and reducing artificially high prices for milk, eggs and chicken.
Ironically I, as a Canadian consumer, find a litre of milk cheaper than a litre of Coke; breakfast with eggs cheaper than other meals I eat when in a restaurant, and chicken one of -
Opinion: Preventing drug overdoses is just the first step
Every. Seven. Hours. That’s how often it happens.
In 2017, that meant more than 1,200 people died from an opioid overdose in Ontario, a disturbing 45% increase over the previous year. As healthcare providers, this trend is simply unacceptable. In marking International Overdose Day on August 31, we feel a profound responsibility to speak to the scientific evidence and our recent frontline experiences of supervised consumption services for people who use drugs.
First, a bit about us: At Sand -
Adam: Why Jim Watson never stops campaigning
Running in his eighth election, Jim Watson is approaching the October 22 vote with calmness and confidence.
Clive Doucet’s much-heralded entry into the race has changed very little strategically for Watson because whatever the odds, he always campaigns as if he’s the underdog – and it will be no different this time. With a well-oiled and well-resourced campaign machine in place, he is trusting the meticulous preparation and organization that has won him seven elections, to see -
