Reevely: Now that they're in government, PCs look for painless 'efficiencies' they promised
The Ontario Progressive Conservatives are facing up to the need to cut billions in spending to keep their campaign promises, appealing to the public for ideas through an online survey.
They’re calling it A Consultation for the People, open now until Sept. 21.
The Tories and Premier Doug Ford were elected on pledges to spend more and to cut taxes, and to balance the budget before long without cutting any public jobs, and the math on that’s hard to square. Like, maybe $20 billion worth -
'People are going to continue to die': Ottawa harm reduction workers set to mark Overdose Awareness Day
For harm reduction workers on the front lines of Ottawa’s overdose crisis, International Overdose Awareness Day starts to feel a bit like the movie Groundhog Day. Politicians and people’s minds change, and so do the services workers are allowed to give. But the core of the problem, which is that drug use is still partly considered a criminal issue, hasn’t gone away.
It’s Sean LeBlanc’s eighth time helping organize an Overdose Awareness Day event, which is scheduled -

Canada's first centre for mental health and sports aims to deal with growing needs
In 2014, university athlete Krista Van Slingerland described her spiral into deep depression and self harm while she played basketball for the Carleton Ravens, a team she eventually left.
“The police interrupted my suicide attempt a few months later. I’m not sure I had the courage to actually go through with it, but I was desperate to make the hurt go away. The reaction of my friends and family, those who had loved me at my worst, served as a wake up call,” she wrote in a blog -

Ottawa firefighters tackle early morning shed fire
Quite a wakeup call for a homeowner, as Ottawa firefighters were called to put out a shed fire in the east end Thursday morning.
The owner of a home on Brant Street called Ottawa firefighters at 6:55 a.m. to report the fire, which appears to be only a few feet from the home itself.
“Our concern was that it was in close proximity to the home,” said Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Danielle Cardinal.
Cardinal said that crews were able to get the fire under control very quickly, and a -

Letters to the editor: Hold officials accountable for horror story
Hold CAS accountable
Re: Man admits physical assault on baby son, sex assaults on girl (Aug. 27)
With much interest and concern, I read this article. A real life horror story! A tragedy! It is absolutely appalling, despicable and unprofessional that the Children’s Aid Society (CAS) after having been warned twice by both the mother and grandmother of the associated dangers did investigate, but deemed the risk acceptable. It is also most disturbing to read that CHE -
